Chapter 3: Halloween

Romantic Sex Story: Chapter 3: Halloween - Nora Kowalski is an actuary, and her family has eleven August birthdays crammed onto one faded backyard banner. She doesn’t believe in coincidence, only in distributions nobody has looked at closely enough. So when she and her husband Danny, a band teacher with a romantic streak, decide to have a baby, she builds a spreadsheet. The math is simple: to get an August due date, they have to conceive between Halloween and New Year’s. The holidays don’t cooperate. A costume party, a Thanksgiving packe

Danny chose his costume himself, and he did it out of spite.

It arrived in a box from a website Nora did not want to know about. It was a full-body white jumpsuit with a bulbous hood and a four-foot tail that dragged behind him like a bridal train. Across the chest, in iron-on letters he’d added himself, it said TEAM WINDOW B.

“You’re a sperm,” Nora said.

“I’m a motivated sperm.” He did a little twirl in the hallway. The tail took out a lamp. “I’m a sperm with a calendar.”

“We are going to a party with your coworkers.”

“And they’re going to love it. Marcy’s going as a uterus. I asked.”

Nora had planned to go as a pie chart. Her sister Jen had talked her out of it over FaceTime with the brutal efficiency of a woman who’d had twins. What Nora wore instead was a red devil dress, short and stretchy, with a pair of glittering horns on a headband and a pitchfork she kept forgetting to hold. She had looked at herself in the bedroom mirror for a long time before they left. She’d felt, not for the first time in her life, like someone who had been handed a different and more dangerous body by mistake.

Danny had come up behind her in the mirror in his sperm suit, put his hands on her hips, and +

said, very softly, “Oh, that’s not fair.”

“It’s Window A,” she’d reminded him. “Everything is closed.”

“You’re closed,” he said into her neck. “You’re the forbidden window. You’re dressed as the forbidden window.”

“I’m dressed as a devil.”

“Same thing.”

The party was at Marcy Halvorsen’s split-level in Wauwatosa. Marcy taught choir at Riverside and was indeed dressed as a uterus, a quilted pink thing with fallopian-tube arms that waved when she gestured. When she saw Danny she screamed and hugged him and their costumes made a noise like two pillows colliding.

“We’re a set!” she cried.

“We’re a set,” Danny agreed, and Nora went to find the cider.

The cider was hard, and good, and there was a lot of it. By nine-thirty she was on her second cup and talking to the school’s athletic director about mortality tables, which he found grim and she found charming. By ten she had lost track of Danny entirely. She could follow him by the reactions, though: a ripple of laughter in the kitchen, a cheer from the living room, a scream from the back patio when the tail got too close to a jack-o’-lantern.

Around ten-fifteen she found him in the hallway by the stairs, alone for once, refilling a punch cup. His hood was pushed back and his hair was a mess and he was flushed from the heat of the suit. He looked up and saw her and his whole face did that thing it did.

She had seen that look across a thousand rooms. At their wedding. At the hospital when her father was sick. Across the kitchen at six in the morning when she was swearing at a thermometer. It always arrived the same way, like he’d just remembered she existed and couldn’t believe his luck.

And something in her — something that had been logging and charting and photographing ovulation strips under consistent lighting for two straight months — simply set down its pen.

“Upstairs,” she said.

He blinked. “What?”

“Upstairs. Now.”

“Nora. It’s Window A.”

“I know what window it is.” She took his hand and towed him up the stairs. The tail thumped behind them on every step. “I have a condom in my purse.”

“You brought a condom to Halloween?”

“I bring condoms everywhere, Danny. I’m controlling for variables.”
