Chapter 2: October
Romantic Sex Story: Chapter 2: October - Nora Kowalski is an actuary, and her family has eleven August birthdays crammed onto one faded backyard banner. She doesn’t believe in coincidence, only in distributions nobody has looked at closely enough. So when she and her husband Danny, a band teacher with a romantic streak, decide to have a baby, she builds a spreadsheet. The math is simple: to get an August due date, they have to conceive between Halloween and New Year’s. The holidays don’t cooperate. A costume party, a Thanksgiving packe

The spreadsheet was called PROJECT AUGUST.xlsx, and by the second week of October it had nine tabs.
Danny found it one Sunday morning on the kitchen table, open on her laptop beside a mug of cold coffee and a thermometer in a little plastic sleeve. He stood over it in his boxers and a Riverside Marching Rams T-shirt for a full minute before he said anything.
“Why is there a tab called Danny — Inputs?”
“You’re a variable,” Nora said, coming in from the shower with her hair in a towel.
“I’m a husband.”
“You’re a variable and a husband. Don’t touch the conditional formatting.”
She had gone off the pill the week after the Combined Birthday and had spent the two months since collecting what she called baseline data. Every morning before her feet touched the floor, she took her basal body temperature and logged it to the hundredth of a degree. She peed on ovulation strips and photographed them against a white index card under consistent lighting. She had read eleven books, two meta-analyses, and a fertility forum so hostile and so full of acronyms that she’d had to build a glossary tab just to follow the arguments. Through all of it, she and Danny had used condoms, because uncontrolled data was worse than no data at all.
“I have a twenty-five-day cycle,” she told him now, scrolling. “Which is short. Which is annoying. But it’s regular, which is beautiful. Look.”
The temperature chart looked like a little mountain range, each peak exactly where it was supposed to be. Danny, who had once described a sunset as “basically a chord,” looked at it and said, “Huh. That’s kind of gorgeous.”
“Thank you.” She clicked to the tab labeled WINDOWS. “Now. A pregnancy runs about thirty-eight weeks from conception. So to get an August due date, conception has to land somewhere between roughly the eighth of November and the seventh of December. With my cycle, I get three fertile windows between now and New Year’s.”
Three rows. Three colors.
Window A: Oct 29 – Nov 3. Red. Projected due date: late July.
Window B: Nov 23 – Nov 28. Green. Projected due date: mid-August.
