Chapter 1: August

Romantic Sex Story: Chapter 1: August - Nora Kowalski is an actuary, and her family has eleven August birthdays crammed onto one faded backyard banner. She doesn’t believe in coincidence, only in distributions nobody has looked at closely enough. So when she and her husband Danny, a band teacher with a romantic streak, decide to have a baby, she builds a spreadsheet. The math is simple: to get an August due date, they have to conceive between Halloween and New Year’s. The holidays don’t cooperate. A costume party, a Thanksgiving packe

The Kowalski Combined Birthday was held every year on the third Saturday of August, in Barb Kowalski’s backyard in West Allis, under a banner that had said HAPPY BIRTHDAY since 1994 and had been amended, in Sharpie, with eleven names.

Eleven. Nora had counted them again that afternoon, standing by the potato salad with a paper plate going soft in her hand. Grandma Dot, August 2nd. Uncle Pete and Aunt Rosie, August 6th and 7th, which everyone agreed was suspicious. Her mother, August 19th. Her sister Jen, August 22nd. Jen’s twins, August 30th. Three cousins she could never keep straight. And Nora herself, August 9th, thirty-four years old as of eleven days ago, an actuary, a woman who did not believe in coincidence so much as in under-examined distributions.

“It’s the statistics,” she said.

“It’s the beer,” said Danny, who was drinking one.

“It’s both. Do you know August is the most common birth month in the country? Something like ten percent of all births. Which means conception clusters between Halloween and New Year’s. Which means my entire family is the product of —”

“Christmas,” Danny said. “Your entire family is the product of Christmas. I’ve always said there was something festive about your people.”

Danny Pell was a March. He had been absorbed into the Kowalskis eight years ago and still wore, at every Combined Birthday, the faintly hunted look of a man attending a cult’s annual retreat. He taught band at Riverside High, owned four ukuleles and one tie, and believed sincerely that the best things in life happened when you weren’t looking at them. Nora had married him partly for that belief and partly to keep an eye on it.

Barb arrived with a sheet cake the size of a car door. It said ELEVEN AUGUST ANGELS in blue gel. She set it down, kissed Nora on the temple, and said, at a volume calibrated to reach the garage, “And next year it’s twelve, right? Right, honey? You’re going to give me an August angel?”

A hush fell over the cousins.

“Mom.”

“I’m only saying. You’re thirty-four. You’ve been married eight years. Jen had the twins at twenty-nine.”

“Jen had the twins because Kyle can’t read a condom wrapper.”
