At first, Veronica could hardly believe what she was doing. She barely knew this man. Only minutes ago, they had been sitting across a table from each other, drinking coffee and talking about music. Now she was kissing him as though the awkwardness of a first meeting, the careful distance people usually kept from strangers, had never existed. Yet the moment Jack kissed her back, her doubts began to dissolve. Some part of her seemed to recognise him, and that feeling was more convincing than any sensible argument she could make against it.
He kissed her without hurrying, and there was something almost unbearably alluring in his restraint. His hand rested lightly at her waist; his thumb moved across the fabric of her dress in a touch so slight she might almost have imagined it. Still, each small movement sent warmth spreading through her. She stepped closer, shifting the rose into her other hand so she could slip her arms around his shoulders. He smelled of cool air and something elusive that was neither cologne nor the scent of his clothes. It seemed familiar, though she couldn’t imagine where she might have encountered it before.
The rest of the hall gradually fell away. Veronica stopped hearing the music, the conversations around them and the clatter of cups behind the bar. There was only the warmth of Jack’s lips, the touch of his hands and that strange sense of recognition growing stronger with every passing moment. She wanted to prolong the kiss, to forget the time, her next performance and the band waiting for her backstage. More than anything, she wanted to be certain he was really there, that she could touch him and that he wouldn’t disappear the moment she opened her eyes.
She knew how unlike herself she was behaving. Until a few minutes ago, she had considered herself sensible enough not to throw herself into the arms of a stranger simply because he had looked at her kindly and given her a flower. Yet she couldn’t bring herself to search for excuses or talk herself out of what was happening. It was almost as though she were watching herself from a little distance, surprised by her own boldness but in no hurry to stop it. If Jack had pulled away, she suspected she would have been the one to close the distance again.
When their lips finally parted, she kept her eyes closed for another moment. Her breathing had grown uneven, and her heart was beating so hard she could feel it in her throat. Warmth spread through her, settling into a deep, unfamiliar ache. She had kissed other men before, but never had a single kiss left her feeling so shaken. The strength of her desire for Jack seemed absurd in its suddenness, almost indecently disproportionate to how little she knew about him.
