The first clean detective showed up on a Tuesday.
Mace saw the unmarked car twice in the same afternoon—once near the tire shop where the hundred-thousand drop had landed, once two blocks from the clinic where Emily still picked up shifts three days a week. The plates ran back to a pool vehicle. No lights, no approach, just presence. That night Carter’s voice on the encrypted line was shorter than usual. He wanted the next shipment moved forty-eight hours early. Bigger load. More cash on the back end. He didn’t mention the unmarked car.
Emily heard the change in Mace’s voice when he told her. They sat at the kitchen island after their son was asleep, the house quiet, the old uniform belt still in the locked drawer upstairs. Mace laid it out without softening it. Carter was getting greedy. The volume was too high. Legitimate JPD—and probably federal—were already circling the outer edges. If they stayed inside the current arrangement much longer, the net would close on everyone, including them.
“We use the shipment,” Emily said. Her hands were flat on the counter. “The one he wants moved early. We give the real route, the real time, the real vehicles to the clean side. We make sure Carter’s name is on every piece of paper that survives the raid. Then we disappear from the middle of it before the doors come off the trucks.”
Mace was quiet for a moment. “If it works, Alonzo goes down with him. If it doesn’t, we’re the ones left standing in the warehouse when the warrants hit.”
“It works if we control the information,” she said. “Carter trusts us to handle the street side. We let him think we’re accelerating because he asked. We feed the clean detectives just enough—through a channel that never touches our phones or our cars—so they hit the convoy at the choke point. We make sure our own vehicles are already three miles away with clean plates and a full alibi.”
They spent the next two hours mapping it. The shipment was set for a midnight run out of a cold-storage facility near the port. Three box trucks. Carter would be in a trail car with two of Alonzo’s men, expecting to peel off once the load cleared the first checkpoint. Mace would drive the lead truck under the cover they had already built. Emily would be in the second vehicle as the “coordinator,” the role Alonzo had started giving her after the yacht. At 11:40 they would both divert—Mace onto a frontage road that looked like a routine fuel stop, Emily into a clinic supply van that was already scheduled for a legitimate overnight restock. The third truck and Carter’s trail car would keep going straight into the blocked exit ramp where the clean units would be waiting.
The tip itself would move through a single burned detective Emily still had a number for from the old Chicago days—someone who hated Carter more than he hated dirty work, and who would rather see a corrupt handler in cuffs than protect a source. No names attached to Mace or Emily. Just times, plates, and the exact ramp.
