The storm came in hard just after eleven. Rain hammered the port roads in sheets. Wind shoved the box trucks sideways on the open stretches. Visibility dropped to almost nothing beyond the headlights. Mace drove the lead truck with both hands on the wheel, wipers thrashing, the radio clipped to the dash carrying only routine check-ins. Emily rode in the second truck two vehicle-lengths back, headset on, voice calm every time she confirmed positions. Carter’s trail car stayed farther behind, exactly where the plan said he would be.
At 11:41 Mace took the exit that looked like a fuel stop and never came back. Emily’s truck peeled off ninety seconds later into the clinic supply lot where a legitimate van was already idling with its lights on. She switched vehicles in the rain, no bags, no hesitation. The third truck and Carter’s car kept rolling straight toward the blocked ramp.
The clean units hit at 11:53. Lights cut through the downpour from three directions. The ramp was already sealed. Carter’s trail car tried to reverse and found another line of units behind it. Alonzo’s men in the third truck never got the doors open. By the time the first warrants were read over the loudspeaker, both Carter and Alonzo were on the wet pavement in cuffs, rain soaking through their clothes, the entire load seized. Federal plates were already on scene. No one asked about a lead truck that had taken an earlier exit or a coordinator who had never arrived.
Mace and Emily met forty minutes later in a grocery-store parking lot ten miles inland, both soaked, both driving cars that had never been near the port. The duffels they had already moved over the previous weeks—separated, cleaned, and staged—were in the trunk of Emily’s car. They didn’t count it there. They drove to a storage unit they had rented months earlier under a different name, moved the cash inside, and locked the door. Then they went home.
The house was dark and quiet. Their son was asleep. They showered, changed, and sat at the kitchen island with the lights low while the storm kept moving over the roof. Neither of them turned on the news. They already knew how it would read by morning: multi-agency bust, corrupt detective and street boss taken down together, millions in product and cash seized, no cooperating witnesses named.
Two weeks later they were both back on the Jacksonville PD roster as undercover officers. Different handlers. Different cases. The old Chicago files stayed closed. Carter was in federal custody and not talking. Alonzo was in the same building two floors away and not talking either. The money in the storage unit stayed where it was.
