The train window blurred under a layer of milky white frost. Emily gently touched her finger to the glass, the cold piercing through her skin, causing her to flinch slightly. After a long night of restless sleep from the constant rattling, her mind gradually settled back into the reality unfolding before her eyes.
The rolling mountain ranges slowly receded behind her, giving way to towering gray stone buildings and the thick fog of Silverwick. The new town emerged arrogant, cold, almost as if it wanted to swallow a fugitive like her whole. Every jolt of the train, every heavy chug compressed against the rails served as a reminder of why she was sitting here, a trip with no return.
Pulling a tarnish-darkened silver necklace from her jacket pocket, its round pendant holding a small photo inside, her slightly plump oval face instantly scowled:
- How the hell is this damn thing still in my pocket?
Her large, round brown eyes flickered with a trace of contempt. It was a photograph cleverly fitted beneath the glass, showing a couple smiling happily. The woman was undoubtedly Emily, but the guy leaning his cheek close to her head was Charlie, the worthless cheater who had betrayed her not long ago.
Even more surprisingly, the toxic mistress in this movie-like drama was Selena, Emily’s best friend from college. All three had known each other during the brightest years of their youth. Selena had been her first roommate and closest friend throughout four years of university. And to top off the surprise, this silver necklace was the last birthday gift she had given Emily for her twenty fourth birthday this past April.
- I was such an innocent fool until I realized how vile those two were.
Gently sliding the train carriage window to the side, Emily snapped fully awake as the sound of the wind and the freezing scent of mountain forests flooded the small compartment. Late autumn had set in, and the town, the place she had chosen to restart her life, carried an atmosphere completely opposite to her past hot and humid coastal city, which lay thousands of miles away on the far eastern end.
- Leave all the pain behind, let us move toward a peaceful new horizon to start over, Emily!
Encouraging herself and casually tossing that cursed necklace into the bushes along the tracks, she felt her mind filled with more freedom than ever before. The scar of betrayal was still there, but her heart was strong enough to push away the filth, eagerly looking forward to a promising new life.
“Dear passengers, please be advised, the train is approaching Silverwick station, please kindly...”
Hearing the announcement for the final destination, Emily hurriedly pulled up her jacket collar while frantically rechecking her luggage. Her tiny heart suddenly pounded rapidly as the train slowed its pace.
The moment she stepped out of the carriage, a wave of intense anxiety and restlessness hit her like a violent surge. It was not the jittery feeling of arriving in a strange place, but something far more mysterious, urging her to keep moving, as if a pair of cold green eyes was staring unblinkingly at her from the void.
“Finally found you!!!”
A deep male voice echoed right beside Emily’s ear the second her foot touched the ground of this foggy town. She frantically spun around, but all that greeted her was the stone-cold face of the female ticket inspector.
- Miss, do you need any help?
Emily reassured herself that she was probably still out of it after the long night train, politely shook her head to decline the offer, then steeled herself to drag her massive suitcase, quickly heading into the quiet station concourse.
- Phew, finally found this damn apartment complex! Wasted the entire day just walking around in circles. How many of these old, ancient buildings does this Silverwick town even have anyway?
Exclaiming to herself after an exhausting ordeal of dragging her heavy suitcase everywhere, Emily realized that using Google Maps here was completely useless. The directions kept taking her to bizarre locations. Eventually, after a lengthy round of questioning the locals, she and her pile of luggage finally reached her new place before the sun dipped below the horizon.
Kingsley Apartments was an old-style building made of red bricks that had faded over time, covered in patches of dried moss and withered vines killed by the cold. The facade carried an arrogant Neoclassical style from the last century, but it was now heavily stained. The carved stone ledges were chipped, and the curved iron balcony railings were rusted, with flakes of black paint peeling off.
Emily felt a slight chill run down her spine as she looked up at her room near the middle of the fourth floor, the topmost floor of the complex, which was about to become her cozy home for the foreseeable future. It seemed she was beginning to regret rushing into a long-term online rental contract with the landlord earlier. Making rash decisions in a chaotic state of mind was truly not her style.
However, Emily quickly reassured herself with a few saving graces: the rent was quite cheap, and even better, the three surrounding apartments on the fourth floor were all vacant. Near-absolute quietness was exactly what she needed right now.
