“Girls! What’s wrong? I came as fast as I could. What happened?”
“Oh Dana! It’s terrible. Worse than we could have ever imagined.”
Rae wore a glum look, her arms tightly crossed. “I don’t know how this could have happened. We were so careful!”
Leah was pacing the length of the cafe floor, wringing her hands, her phone clutched like a live grenade. “The blockade failed. It actually failed! We’ve been compromised at the absolute highest level!”
Dana dropped her bag onto the table and sat down quickly. “Compromised? Someone got through your blockade? How? Was it a digital breach?”
“Worse,” groaned Leah. “It was a physical breach. She made it past the perimeter.”
“Who? How did she get past you two?”
“Sophie Devereau!” Leah said worriedly.
“Who is Sophie Devereau? She sounds like someone from a Pink Panther movie.”
Rae shook her head. “If only. Leah, show her Sophie.”
Leah loaded Sophie’s Insta and Facebook profiles and gave Dana the phone.
Dana’s eyes almost bugged out. She let out a low wolf-whistle. “This is her? Holy shit! You let her get through your blockade?”
Leah and Rae looked at each other warily.
“Okay, first of all, respect. This woman is fine! She’s in her mid-twenties, and right up there in your league in terms of looks.”
“We know,” Rae said stonily. “Do you find her body intoxicating as well?”
“Intoxicating? She’s a redhead, with a banging body and green eyes? That’s more than intoxicating. She’s a stone-cold babe.”
Dana closed her eyes, “Damn! The things I would have done to this woman a few years back.”
Leah cleared her throat. “Dana, could you please stop admiring the enemy?”
“I’m not admiring her. I’m assessing her. Babes, look at this. She must be loaded. She has a successful business supplying luxury ingredients. My my...”
Rae raised her voice. “Dana, stop it! You zoomed in on that picture of her in a bikini.”
Dana whistled. “Check out that sexy belly button piercing. You girls think she’s got other parts of her pierced too? I mean ... Can you imagine her with barbells on her...”
“DANA! STOP IT!”
Rae threw up her hands in despair. “I’ve created a threat assessment based on the research Leah did on her social handles. We’ve combed through everything available on her. To put things in a way you can understand ... things are sub-optimal.”
“Sub-optimal? Say it like it is babe. We are screwed,” Leah wailed.
Dana continued to ignore the girls as they complained to her. Her eyes widened as she took in Sophie in a designer bikini that left very little to the imagination.
“Okay, wow. These bikini shots are ... yeah.” Dana shifted in her chair. “Girls, I may need a minute.”
“Dana! Give me back the damn phone!”
“Ok ok...” Dana sighed. “I get that this girl is amazing. But what’s the SOS about? Surely you have your various strategies to push her away. She can’t be the first bombshell you’ve had to deflect from Paul. In fact I remember that sexy model you guys managed to repel last week. She was not too far off from this girl.”
Leah groaned, “It’s not just that she’s hot. Show her that photo, Rae. Show her what we’re worried about.”
Rae took the phone and tapped through some photos until she found the one she wanted. She held the phone out to Dana with a gloomy face.
“Look at this. Tell me we’re not in trouble.”
Dana’s eyes widened. Sophie was hanging off Paul’s arm in the selfie, her lush body was pressed flush against his side. Paul looked like a blushing teenager who couldn’t believe his luck.
But the funniest part was Rae and Leah standing behind them. Both looked so sour they could have curdled milk.
Dana nearly doubled over wheezing with laughter. “Oh, my god. Is this real? You two look hilarious. Why are you photobombing them? Clearly you were not invited.”
“It’s not funny, Dana.” Leah snapped.
“It’s the funniest damn thing I’ve seen in my life.” Dana had to wipe a tear from her eye. Seeing both girls look so miserable, she took pity on them.
“Now girls. I get it. She’s a hard ten on my babe rating scale. Look at that body! I mean, her waist is non-existent and those curves. She could walk into a Playboy centerfold shoot and not look out of place.”
“We didn’t call you to come and admire her photos. We need help.” Leah said, crossing her arms.
“Yeah, Dana. We have eyes. We know that she’s gorgeous. Tell us what we need to do.”
Dana thought about it for a second. “I mean, she’s beautiful and all, but why are you girls worried? It’s not like Paul’s not been around gorgeous women.”
“Read the comment underneath that selfie.”
Dana squinted to read the caption underneath the photo “Finally got a picture with the man I’ve been trying to meet for months! Turns out he’s the only man worth turning off my phone for.”
Dana shrugged. “I mean that’s cute and all.”
Leah shook her head. “Look at her other photos. She’s not even got one photo with another man. Check out how she handles other men that comment on her.”
Dana leaned over as Rae scrolled through her photo albums. There wasn’t a single picture with another man that wasn’t related to her. Everything else was just her dad, uncles and cousins.
Dana then picked a photo where other men had commented on her. She winced when she read the way Sophie responded to them.
“Ouch! She doesn’t just reject other men, she literally executes them in the comments.”
“Exactly!” Rae agreed. “She ignores the hangers-on and tears apart the arrogant ones. She treats other men like lint on her designer coats.”
Dana leaned back and thought hard for a moment.
“Wait a minute,” Dana said, tilting her head. “And why Paul? I mean ... as a former girlfriend I can attest to the fact that he’s amazing, but compared to the other guys hitting on her constantly ... he doesn’t stand out. And most importantly, how on earth did she get past the blockade?”
“We were just so stupid!” Rae wailed. “She flattered me?”
“Flattered you?” Dana looked at her with alarm. “But you’re immune to flattery.”
“Not from her!” Leah cut in. “She said she was our biggest fan. We didn’t even see it coming!”
Dana took a deep breath as she held the bridge of her nose with her fingers. “Ok girls. Start from the beginning.”
“Last week...” Rae began sulkily.
Halloween was only two weeks away. Things were heating up for Leah and Rae at Nell’s. There were so many things to do. That afternoon after the lunch rush, Leah and Rae were sitting in one corner working on the numerous things they still needed to do for Halloween.
“Leah, we can’t keep adding things to the menu. Paul’s going to have a fit.”
“I’m not adding things, babe. I’m suggesting how we can promote what he’s already making.”
“Then why do I have four new dishes on my list?”
Leah grinned. “Because they sounded delicious?”
Rae rolled her eyes. The two of them looked up when the bell above the front door chimed.
Neither girl was ready for the woman that walked through the door. She had thick auburn hair, green eyes and a body that was made for sin. She was dressed in a beautiful silk dress with a taupe trench coat hanging open over it.
Both women looked at each other grimly. She was going to be trouble. Leah nodded to Rae imperceptibly. We need to get rid of this one before Paul comes out of the kitchen.
The woman looked around the restaurant before spotting Rae. Her eyes widened.
She approached Rae and spoke breathlessly. “No way! Are you Rae?”
Rae looked up from her tablet. “Yes?”
“From the videos on Nell’s page?”
Rae smiled. “Guilty.”
“Oh, wow!” The woman laughed and pressed a hand to her chest. “You have no idea how excited I am to meet you. You’re even more beautiful in person! I absolutely love your videos.”
Rae blushed. “Thank you.”
“And Leah? Is she here too? Please tell me she is.”
Leah popped her head around Rae’s shoulder. “I’m here.”
“Wow,” The woman stared at her. “I swear those videos don’t do you two justice. You’re even more beautiful in person. How do you even look like that?”
Leah laughed, thoroughly enjoying herself. “Well, thank you! We try our best to look good for our followers.”
“I know! I follow everything you post. That Halloween campaign you’re running? Brilliant! I absolutely love what you’ve been doing lately.”
Rae couldn’t help smiling. “That’s mostly Leah’s doing.”
“Don’t listen to her,” Leah said. “She looks gorgeous. I just made her realize it.”
The woman laughed. “Well, whatever you’re doing, keep doing it. You two are amazing.”
“Thank you, sweetie,” Leah said warmly. “Now, are you going to tell us who you are, or should we keep accepting compliments all afternoon?”
“Oh!” The woman laughed again. “Sorry. I’m Sophie. Sophie Devereau. From Sophie’s Choice. We have corresponded regularly by email. About exotic ingredients?”
Rae stood up. “Sophie Devereau? From Sophie’s Choice Imports?”
Sophie smiled. “That’s me! I swear, I don’t know what I was expecting when I turned up. But it’s just so awesome to see the both of you!”
“Holy crap!” Rae exclaimed. “You’re Sophie? You’re the one who’s been handling all our specialty ingredients?”
Sophie nodded happily. “A couple of weeks back I got Paul the cinnamon he wanted. I had messaged him that I would drop in. It’s okay, right? I hope I’m not interrupting anything?”
“EEEE!” Rae squealed excitedly. Leah looked at Rae in astonishment. “Leah, this woman is incredible. Sophie, do you know how many times you’ve saved our asses? You remember that fenny you got for us from India? Paul was ready to tear his hair out until you found it for us.”
Sophie grinned. “I remember that order. That one was fun.”
“Fun? You have a very strange definition of fun, babe. We were in serious trouble till you found that for us.”
“I like a challenge.”
Rae shook her head admiringly. “Well, you’ve never let us down. Not once. Come on, sit with us.”
Sophie slid into the booth beside Leah gracefully.
“So how come you’ve never dropped in before? You do so much business with us.”
“Truth be told, I’d moved out of the city for a few years. I’ve moved back. This time I was determined to meet everyone. I’ve been here before when Nell and Ajay Gupta used to run the place. I was in college at that time. I fell in love with the food. Then life got in the way and I couldn’t come back for a few years. In that time I built my business and I’ve been supplying your restaurant for years without ever getting a proper chance to meet the famous Chef Paul.”
Leah nodded her head. “Yeah Uncle Ajay and Aunt Nell used to run the place. They passed away a couple of years back. Paul’s been in charge of the restaurant since then.”
Sophie looked sad. “I remember Mrs. Gupta. She was such a lovely lady. I only met her a couple of times, but she really made an impression. And Mr. Gupta. He was a real sweetheart.”
Rae nodded. “He was that. And Nell was one of the nicest people I’ve ever known.”
Leah added, “Aunt Nell and Uncle Ajay were like my own mom and dad. I literally grew up here, you know?”
Sophie held both their hands. “No wonder you girls care so much about the place. You can make out the love you have for Nell’s in every video you make.”
Rae and Leah looked at each other happily.
“So, I came in hoping to meet the famous Paul Gupta. Any chance I could say hello?”
“Good luck with that,” Leah giggled. “The man practically lives in his kitchen.”
“Tell me about it! I’ve been trying to get fifteen minutes with him for months. Rae keeps telling me he’s busy.”
“That’s because he is! If I’d known that you had so much history with us, I’d have arranged for this meet a long time back. It’s so sweet of you to drop in! That’s really for the best you know?” Rae said, laughing. “You have no idea how difficult it is to get that man to sit down for anything that doesn’t involve food.”
“Well, that’s actually what I wanted to discuss with him. Plus, I wanted to compliment you on your amazing Halloween marketing. I’ve never seen anything like it!”
Leah glanced at the notes on the table. “Speaking of Halloween, you’ve come at the perfect time. We’re working on the menu for the event.”
“Ooh! Can I see?”
“Of course.” Rae turned her tablet toward Sophie.
Sophie spent a few minutes looking through the dishes.
“Hmm. Has he considered using black garlic?”
Rae looked interested. “For which dish?”
“The beef. If he’s looking for something dark and earthy, I’d try black garlic with smoked chilies. You could get a wonderful sauce without drowning everything in cream.”
Leah leaned forward. “And it’ll look good on camera?”
Sophie smiled. “Absolutely. Especially if you show the sauce being made instead of just the finished plate.”
Leah looked delighted. “Oh, I like that!”
“Black garlic?” came a voice from behind them.
Paul had walked out of the kitchen and was standing beside the booth.
“Who was talking about black garlic?”
Rae looked up happily. “Paul! Come here. There’s someone I want you to meet.”
