“Thank you, sweetie.” Dana groaned as she gratefully accepted a large cup of black coffee from the waitress.

She took a big gulp and leaned back with satisfaction. “God! I needed that.”

Leah looked at her and giggled. “Serves you right, you alcoholic bitch. You drank like a fish last night.”

Dana looked at her through her dark sunglasses. “As if you girls were any better. You were right there drinking with me.”

Rae clucked sympathetically. “Must be age catching up. Leah and I are fine, aren’t we babe?”

Dana sat up indignantly, “Oh shut up! I’m only five years older than you two.”

“And yet here you are, groaning about how your head is splitting after a few bottles of wine.” Rae remarked deadpan. Leah giggled.

“Ha ha. Very funny. Why did I spend all night trying to help you two?”

Leah leaned forward with a twinkle in her eye, “That wasn’t all that you told us last night.”

Dana groaned loudly. “Please tell me I didn’t say what I think I did.”

Leah took a delicate sip of her latte, “Oh, you said a lot of things I think you didn’t mean last night.”

Rae added with a grin, “You mean the part where she talked about her lesbian experiences?”

“Or the part where she talked about how she liked sharing her bed with Paul. Or how you thought Rae’s body was intoxicating,” Leah teased.

“Ahhhhhhh! Stop it! I’m your older sister. I’m supposed to be the sensible one in this family. Remind me never to drink with you two bitches again.”

“Tsk-tsk. The things that happen to you when you get old.” Rae deadpanned.

“Argh!”

“Personally, I found it pretty educational, you know,” Leah chimed in. “Who knew my sweet, respectable sister had such a ... an adventurous side to her?”

Dana shot a glare at Leah behind her glasses. “You’re supposed to be my sister. You’re not supposed to take advantage of me when I was at my worst.”

“Oh, we love you, babe,” Rae cooed, patting her arm. “Still, tell me. Do Leah and I need to be careful around you now?”

Leah’s lips twitched. “Yeah, Dana. We’d love to know. What would you rate us on your babe scale?”

Dana squinted through her sunglasses angrily at Leah, “I’m happily married to your brother-in-law, you absolute bitch.”

“Answer the question, Dana. Rate us.” Rae said, nudging Dana.

“Zero. You’re both zeroes.” Dana muttered darkly. “Now leave me alone and tell me what you both discussed all night after I fell asleep.”

Both girls giggled. “You said you were going to wait up for Chris and jump him when he got home. Instead he had to carry you to bed.”

“Ha ha. I’ll make it up to him. Now spill.”

“You mean you’re going to take one of us to bed with you next time? Maybe both?” Rae winked at Leah.

Dana groaned loudly. “Okay, that’s enough already. Either you bitches tell me what you talked about, or I’m leaving.”

Both girls sighed. The playful mood evaporated in a second.

Dana set her mug down and looked sympathetically at the girls.

“So what did you two decide? I know we were out of our minds last night. My plan was crazy, but I wasn’t completely lying, you know. You both can’t have a relationship with Paul alone.”

The girls nodded slowly. They exchanged a silent look across the table. Leah took a deep breath and spoke. “We know, Dana. We spoke about it all night after you slept. We didn’t sleep all night.”

Dana gulped, “Seriously? And this is how you look after a sleepless night?”

“The benefits of not being an old lady,” Rae said smugly.

Dana groaned. “I walked into that one didn’t I? Okay, okay. Continue.”

Leah huffed. “You were right, Dana. Neither of us can back off. We tried loving him separately. Look at where we’re at.”

Rae took Leah’s hands in hers. “We’re in, Dana. We’re doing this as a team. Now we just need to decide what comes next.”

Dana whistled. “Damn! I thought you were going to tell me I was crazy or something after thinking about it. So you’re going to share him?”

“We’re still not sleeping with you, you pervert!” Leah said indignantly.

“Shhh! Shut up! We’re in public,” Dana grimaced as she saw a few people in the cafe look toward them.

“Yeah. You can find my body intoxicating, but I’m a one man woman, Dana.” Rae said loudly with a grin. Leah giggled.

Dana groaned, putting her face in her hands. “You bitches are never going to let me forget this are you?”

“Okay, okay. Since you were nice enough to help us last night, we’ll stop.” Leah snorted.

“For now.” Rae added with a smile.

“Fine. So tell me what’s next.” Dana said morosely, shaking her head. “You two are the absolute worst. I think I liked you better when you hated each other.

“But you love us, right?” Rae said, nudging Dana. She winked at Leah.

“Yes yes. I don’t know why I ought to, but I do love you idiots. Can you please tell me what you planned?”

“Actually we kind of got stuck after thinking about throwing a Halloween party. We kinda need your help.” Rae admitted.

“And you thought making fun of me was the right way to encourage me to help you?” Dana looked at them indignantly.

“Hey! We’re your younger sisters. You’re bound to help us.” Leah protested. “Teasing is like foreplay.”

“You’re a virgin. What the fuck do you know about foreplay?” Dana said sarcastically.

Rae chortled. “That’s a good one, babe.”

Dana looked pleased at herself. “That was, wasn’t it? Okay, let’s get down to business. What do you hope to achieve by Halloween?”

“That we both work together and Paul falls madly in love with us?” Leah said hopefully.

Dana groaned. “That’s not a plan. That’s the outcome. What the fuck did you girls do for so many hours?”

The girls shrugged.

“This is hopeless. Rae, come on. You’re the analytical one. Surely you can do better.”

Rae thought about it for a few moments while Leah and Dana stared at her. Then, she set her coffee cup down and leaned in. “Alright, If we’re doing this. We treat this like an operational root cause analysis. We define the problem, identify the root causes, and come up with a solution to address each one of the root causes.”

Leah looked horrified. “Babe, we’re talking about the man we love. This not about figuring out why Friday lunch numbers is down.”

Rae threw her hands up in the air. “If it were only so easy!”

Dana snorted into her coffee. “Okay girls. Looks like you need some wisdom from the wise one.”

“You mean old one.”

“Shut it.”

“Okay, sorry wise one. Please continue.”

Dana looked at the two indignantly.

“Okay, shut up Rae. Let the wise one continue. Oh, wise one. Please bestow upon us thine wisdom.”

Dana clucked happily. “That’s better. Okay, girls. Let’s look at this logically. What do we know about Paul?”

She ticked off her fingers one by one.

“One: Paul loves both of you. Two: Paul finds you both attractive. Three: He’s scared to choose one of you over the other.”

Both girls nodded.

Leah adjusted her sunglasses, thinking.

“I think the problem is how Paul compartmentalizes his life.”

“What do you mean, Dana?”

Dana paused for a moment. “Think about how he fits people into his world.”

She picked up the salt and pepper shakers and the ketchup bottle from the table.

“This salt shaker is Nell’s. That’s his identity and his legacy. He cares deeply about the people associated with it.”

The girls nodded in agreement.

“This pepper shaker is his family. His chosen ones. That’s us. We’re his safety net. That includes Chris and me and you two. He is terrified about losing any of us.”

Leah and Rae agreed.

“This ketchup bottle is everything else. Including his drive for sex and romance. These are things that he doesn’t particularly worry about too much. As long as the salt and pepper shakers are always there. That includes women that he can enjoy, sleep with and eventually lose without threatening Nell’s or his relationships with us.”

Rae gasped. “That makes sense! That’s why we’ve never met anyone he sleeps with. He never introduces anyone to us.”

Leah added excitedly, “They’re not part of his shakers ... I mean what he really cares about. He keeps the rest of his relationships away from us because we’re the only people in his life that he can’t lose.”

“Exactly,” Dana said, leaning back happily. “He’s built walls around himself so that nothing can hurt what he cares about most. He thinks that he can never pursue a relationship with you two because he doesn’t want to lose you.”

Rae pulled out a pocket notebook and a sleek gel pen.

Leah gasped, “Where the hell did you get that from?”

Dana added. “Yeah you’re in leggings. Where did you even keep those?”

Rae shrugged. “I always have this notebook and a pen on me at all times.”

She flipped to a new page and drew three columns. She wrote Work, Family, Others as headings on top of each column.

She put her name under work and Leah’s under Family.

“So. If we treat this like an operational optimization problem, the solution is obvious. We need to rebalance the configuration. Leah needs to straddle Work and Family. I need to straddle Family and Work. Halloween works well to integrate Leah into both. I need to figure out how to straddle Family more.”

Dana reached across the table and held Rae’s hand. “Sweetie, stop. This is not a business problem. I’m not saying what you analyzed was wrong ... but stop thinking about this as a purely logical problem. You’re trying to build a relationship, babe.”

She took Rae’s notebook from her and scratched out what Rae had written. She then drew a circle that stretched across all three columns and labelled it Love. She then wrote Rae and Leah’s names inside and handed the notebook back.

“My darlings. You need to stop thinking about this as a shift schedule. You need Paul to bring down his walls and become a part of all parts of his life.”

Leah spoke up, “We’re not going to divide him. We’re not going to take turns with him. We both belong to him. Everywhere.”

“Exactly!” Dana stated happily.

Rae let out a shuddering breath, “That is a much better plan.”

She reached out and took the pen back from Dana. She flipped to a fresh page and stated, “Okay, so we need a primary rule. An operational core value.”

“Sweetie, don’t take this the wrong way. But if you write down core value on that page, I’m going to stuff the notebook down your throat,” Dana threatened.

Leah spluttered her coffee trying not to laugh.

“Hey! I’m trying to establish boundaries and a core value,” Rae protested, her mouth twitching.

“Good. Let’s establish them.” Leah said gently. “But let’s think about this emotionally as well.”

Rae thought about it for a bit and nodded. “Agreed. The first core value is that both of us are going to be equal partners to Paul.”

Leah clapped. “Now that’s worth writing down, babe. Yes! I agree. No one is second. We don’t rank ourselves. We both get Paul.”

Rae grinned. “The second, we both try and integrate ourselves into his world at Nell’s and with family. I have an advantage. I am part of both worlds. That’s where Halloween comes in.”

Leah high fived Rae. “Yes! But how do we make this work?”

Dana looked at them curiously, “Why did you suggest Halloween in the first place?”

Leah shrugged, “I dunno. I was thinking that if we threw a big party at Nell’s for Halloween, I could take over the marketing efforts and kind of hang out with both of them throughout the day.”

Rae’s eyes widened, “Babe! That’s a fantastic idea. Nell’s marketing is a complete disaster anyway. Our man thinks that marketing means giving away free food and expensive bottles of wine. Would you be interested in running marketing for us?”

Leah thought about it for a second. “It will be tough with my existing workload.”

Dana snorted, “Do you care about being an influencer or do you care about Paul?”

Leah shook her head. “Paul of course.”

“Then I think it’s pretty clear what you need to do. You don’t have to lose your identity, but if you really want to be a part of their world, then you need to sacrifice something as well. Are both those worlds really exclusive?”

Leah thought about it for a few moments.

“No. I could always re-brand myself. I don’t need to take on so many projects. I’ll dedicate my time to Nell’s. Aunt Nell and Uncle Ajay would be thrilled. They always loved when I helped out.”
