Tuesday morning arrived bright and clear. At 7:30 sharp, the three women were already settled into their usual corner booth at Bean & Grace in Champaign. The rich smell of fresh coffee and pastries filled the air, but the atmosphere at their table hummed with quiet anticipation.

Mary Ann wore a soft cream blouse that hugged her generous curves, paired with jeans. Pam looked polished as always in a light blue top and tailored slacks. Mariah, her four-month pregnancy now gently rounding her figure, had chosen a flowy pink sundress that comfortably accommodated her growing belly.

The bell above the door jingled at exactly 7:45.

Sarah Thompson stepped inside.

She was exactly as the photos suggested — twenty-seven, petite with a naturally curvy figure, long blonde hair falling in soft waves past her shoulders, and bright blue eyes that carried a hint of nervousness. She wore a modest floral blouse and a knee-length skirt, her wedding ring catching the morning light.

Mary Ann stood first, offering a warm, welcoming smile. “Sarah? You must be Pastor Jay’s wife. I’m Mary Ann — Pastor Jim’s wife. These are Pam and Mariah.”

Sarah smiled shyly, relief visible on her face as she approached the table. “Hi ... yes, that’s me. It’s so nice to finally meet you all. Jay said you ladies would be reaching out. Thank you for inviting me.”

Pam stood and pulled out the empty chair beside her. “Of course. We’ve been doing these Tuesday morning coffees for a while now. It’s become our little tradition — just the pastor’s wives supporting each other.”

Mariah gave Sarah a gentle, understanding smile, one hand resting on her own belly. “We know how overwhelming it can be moving to a new city, especially when your husband is stepping into a big new role like Family Care Pastor.”

Sarah sat down, ordering a vanilla latte and a croissant when the server came by. For the first twenty minutes, the conversation stayed safe and friendly — how the move from Indianapolis had gone, how Jay was already diving into marriage counseling sessions, how Sarah was still trying to find her place in the women’s ministry at Grace Evangelical. Then Pam leaned in slightly, her voice warm and inviting. “So tell us ... how are you really doing? Being a pastor’s wife can feel lonely sometimes, even when you’re surrounded by people.”

Sarah hesitated, stirring her latte slowly. Her cheeks flushed a soft pink.

“It’s ... been harder than I expected,” she admitted quietly. “Jay is so passionate about his work. He’s gone most evenings with counseling appointments or preparing messages. We barely see each other. And when we do ... well, it’s not exactly what I hoped for in our marriage.”

Mary Ann reached across the table and gently squeezed Sarah’s hand, her touch lingering just a second longer than necessary. “Sweetheart, you can be honest with us. We’ve all been there. Ministry can take so much from a husband that there’s not much left for his wife.”

Pam nodded, eyes soft with feigned sympathy. “And the pressure to be the perfect pastor’s wife ... to always look put-together and godly ... it can make you feel like you’re suffocating sometimes.”

Sarah looked up at the three women, her blue eyes vulnerable. She didn’t notice the subtle, hungry glances passing between Mary Ann, Pam, and Mariah.

“I just ... sometimes I want to feel wanted again,” she whispered, almost ashamed. “Not just needed for the church. Wanted.”

Mariah smiled softly, her voice gentle but carrying a hidden edge. “Oh, honey ... we understand that feeling more than you know.”

Mary Ann’s smile remained perfectly warm on the surface, but her eyes held a dark, predatory gleam as she leaned in closer.

“We’re so glad you’re here, Sarah. From now on, you’re part of our little group. Every Tuesday — no excuses. We’ll take very good care of you.”

Sarah let out a small, relieved laugh, completely unaware of the web slowly closing around her.

“Thank you,” she said sincerely. “I already feel better just talking to you three.” Pam exchanged the briefest knowing look with Mary Ann and Mariah.
