Kim Kelly is being interviewed by my secretary as I come in the back door. I notice her as I pass through to my office. Nothing special. She is about 20 or 21 years old. Very plain looking. Short about 5’ 1” tall, maybe 100 lbs. with light brown hair and blue eyes. She is wearing a dress that looks like she bought it at a goodwill store. It is clean but way out of style. It comes to below her knees which makes her look even shorter than she is. Her flat sandals complete the picture. I keep the door open and watch her interview.
She has graduated the local community college with a degree in secretarial science, she took a lot of her elective courses in computer sciences and office management. This is her first job interview and she is a little nervous. My secretary asks her to come sit beside her and look at what she was doing on the computer. Kim immediately knows what is happening. She even makes suggestions on how to do it faster and recommends that we get the update to the program we are using as it will help make the job easier. After about a half hour my secretary comes into my office and shuts the door.
“Hire this girl and now. We will never find another with her qualifications and we don’t want her going anyplace else. She will be hired wherever she goes. Don’t let her get away now you hear me?” With that said she opens the door and tells Kim to come in and take a seat.
“Well Kim I am Frank and you seem to have made a great impression on Brenda. Let’s cut to the chase, when can you start?”
“Today if you want me to.”
That was how I met Kim. She started that day and it was like she had worked there all her life. She took over the computer desk and by the end of the day she was even scheduling deliveries. She was a godsend.
Remember I told you I would explain the “house” comment, well here goes. When my dad bought the quarry, it was just a piece of land with a house that the owner lived in. He re-modeled the house and made it into an office, but it still looked like a house from the outside. When you entered the front door, you were in the front office where the secretary sat with the computer and the file cabinets. Off that was my office and it had been the master bedroom; it had a bathroom. A door off the front office opened into a huge breakroom for the workers. It had a complete kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave oven and sink. There were tables so that the men could sit and eat their lunch or just drink coffee while they waited for their next assignment. That was where the time clock and the timecards were located. Every morning the men clocked in and in the evening they clocked out. Part of Kim’s’ job would be to keep up with the timecards and to figure payroll.
