Hellooooo, this is Dragonpig, your friendly neighborhood weird dude. Have you ever wondered who will inherit the Earth if, for some reason, humanity destroys itself in a global war? The food was almost done in the kitchen of her childhood home. The smell brought back pleasant memories.

Posy stood at the stove with a wooden spoon in one hand, listening to the radio on the counter and stirring the sauce, the one with roasted tomatoes, paprika, and honey. Mushrooms, peppers, and sweet onions sautéed in the pan beside it. It was the dish her father used to make for the two of them: rice, vegetables, and that sauce. He had never written the recipe down. Posy had spent most of her spare time reconstructing it from memory, until one day she tasted it and felt she’d gotten it right.

Today was their birthdays. She was turning twenty-nine, and her dad was turning fifty-four.

She tapped the spoon against the rim of the pot and let her eyes drift to the cabinet doors above the stove, where a photograph of her mother hung beside the circle with the vertical line down the middle, the symbol of the Hollows faith. Elizabeth stood beside a stream, laughing at something outside the frame, her long brown hair blowing in the wind. She had died in a car accident when Posy was young. She had been coming back from the grocery store when a hit-and-run driver killed her.

For a moment Posy’s throat tightened, and she swallowed. Then she breathed out and shook her head.

“No,” she said firmly. “Not today. Today’s a happy day.”

She had told her father over the phone that she would meet him later and they would celebrate their birthdays together. That was the arrangement they had settled into over the years, careful and distant. But last night she had lain awake after leaving Prof. Pendergrass and decided she was tired of careful. So she had come early, let herself in with her key, and started cooking. He would walk in and find her in the kitchen making their favorite meal.

She sang along with the radio and turned the heat down under the rice.

Then she heard it: the turn of a key in the front door, and the familiar stubborn click of the lock he’d never gotten around to oiling.

Her heart jumped.

The door swung open. She heard the soft clink of his keys landing in the bowl by the door, the ceramic one she had made for him in pottery class, and the sound of his boots being unzipped. There was a pause. She imagined what he was doing: lifting his nose, catching the scent.
