With a groan, Nicole opened her eyes. It was dark, her head was spinning, and her stomach ached from the hit.
She tried to move but didn’t succeed, as her wrists were bound behind her back.
Ah, fuck! Stupid shitheads!
Her mind flooded with every curse she could think of, continuing for a few minutes. After that, she let out a deep sigh, trying to calm down.
Alright, and what now? Am I going to rot here for eternity? Maybe an actual prison wasn’t so bad ... Fuck, I have to find a way to escape.
Lying on her side, she rolled onto her back and managed to sit up.
That’s better.
Only now did she notice that her panties were gone, leaving her completely naked.
Looking around, she realized she was locked in a small cage—not tall enough for her to stand. The bars had enough space between them for her to fit almost an entire arm through. The last thing she noted was that the cage was covered with a piece of leather, making the inside almost completely dark. Small holes in the covering allowed just enough light for her to see.
Suddenly, her stomach growled, and only then did she realize how hungry she was. After all, the last time she had eaten was dinner on the ship.
Luckily for her—or maybe not, as she had no idea how much time had passed—she soon heard footsteps approaching. Along with them came an unfamiliar smell, growing more intense as its source neared.
The person stopped in front of the cage.
A second later, a bright light blinded Nicole as the leather cover was ripped away.
Blinking rapidly, she saw Terl standing there, grinning down at her.
“Hey, totally-not-Lamia. I brought you some food.”
With those words, he held up a bowl filled with slices of an unknown fruit. It was round and yellow, with a thick green skin. The slices were about the size of a small watermelon.
“But you know ... why should I give it to you? Maybe I should eat it myself, hm?”
Terl continued to smirk confidently at her.
“I know you must be hungry, right? I’ll let you eat if you finally tell me who you really are.”
What idiots, all of them. Though ... maybe I should just agree with them? Admit that I’m with those ‘Lamia’ and maybe they’ll let me go? NO! That’s stupid. What if they kill me? Ugh...
“Listen, how many times do I have to repeat myself? I am Nicole. A human. I was never part of any tribe, never had fucking ears or a tail. And no, I am not with the Lamia—I don’t even know who or what they are!”
Nicole raised her voice, nearly shouting, panting in frustration.
“Well, if you really don’t want to admit anything, I guess I’ll have to leave you without food.”
With a mocking smile, Terl started eating the fruit meant for her.
“Fuck you, bastard!”
Nicole glared at him, hunger and hatred burning in her eyes.
“I’ll be back soon. Let’s see if you’re ready to talk then.”
With those words, Terl threw the leather cover back over the cage and left, plunging Nicole into near-total darkness again.
She sat there, shaking slightly as emotions swirled inside her—hunger, gloom, bitterness, and rage, all tangled together.
Tears welled in her eyes from fear and loneliness. Even in prison, she had never felt this alone. Even when she watched other prisoners get visits from their families while no one ever came for her, she hadn’t felt this abandoned.
Fuck this shit ... I just want to go back home ... I should have never gone drinking with the guys that day...
She started sobbing, on the verge of completely breaking down.
You know what? Fuck them. Nicole, you’re a grown woman. Stop pitying yourself and do whatever it takes to survive. Not just that—I’ll get strong enough to turn the tables in my favor.
With renewed determination, she forced her emotions down. Closing her eyes, she leaned back against the bars of her cage and tried to fall asleep.
In sleep, I won’t feel hunger.
She had barely begun to relax when the leather cover was lifted again.
This time, it was Soi. She crouched next to the cage, lifting the cover just enough to see Nicole.
“Hey, Nicole,” she whispered.
“I really shouldn’t be here, talking to you. But I feel guilty for what happened. I’m sorry. I really didn’t expect this to happen.”
Nicole sighed but remained silent.
“So ... I came to ask ... A-Are you really not with the Lamia? A-And you don’t belong to any tribe?”
“Yes, and it’s the fifth or sixth time I’ve said that.”
Soi nodded, looking at Nicole with genuine trust in her eyes.
“Alright, I believe you. I’ll try to find a way to get you out. Oh, and I’ll bring you some food too. Just wait a little longer.”
With that, the catgirl replaced the cover and left.
Well, I hope she comes back soon ... or I’ll starve to death.
Just as she tried to relax again, Terl returned.
“Hello again, girl. Here, eat. We can’t let you actually die here, right?”
He placed a long, thin wooden plate on the cage floor, sliding it between the bars. This time, there were small, bright-blue fruits, slightly larger than grapes.
“And how am I supposed to eat if my wrists are tied behind my back?”
“Hm? Just bow down and eat, you know, like an animal. Haha.”
The big guy laughed while she stared daggers at him.
Nicole reluctantly grabbed one of the fruits with her mouth, biting into it. It tasted like a mix of pineapple and pear—sweet but slightly salty.
Well, I guess there’s no point in poisoning me. If they wanted me dead, killing me directly would be way easier.
When she finished, Terl took the plate back.
“So, are you going to talk? Come on, just stop with your ‘human’ bullshit.”
Before Nicole could answer, a strange sensation washed over her. Heat spread from her stomach, rising through her body in all directions. Her thoughts became foggy, her mind heavy.
“Oh, looks like the Zyrells are kicking in.”
Terl grinned, but Nicole could barely understand his words.
