The curtain was close enough to touch and I couldn’t see it. I could only hear what was behind it — Overbuild, mid-set, the crowd breaking over them in waves — and feel it come back through the dark into Reese, whose heart was slamming against my chest like it wanted out. Jo had us at the mark, the chain slack. The heat. The whole day banked around us in the sealed air. And that sound through the curtain, getting bigger.
“Listen to that,” Reese said, out the vent, under her breath, to me. Not scared. Counting. “That’s the whole room up on its feet. For them.”
“We’re better.”
“Not from here we’re not.”
And her hand came off the creature’s arm.
In the dark I felt it leave the sleeve and come down between us and find me where I’d been all day, laid up the slot of her, slick, that safe worn line — and close around me, and lift me off it. Off the groove we’d ridden eight hours. She dragged the head of me up through the wet of her, slow, to the other place. The place that gave. The one she’d made me swear off at dawn. She set me against it and held me there, and I felt her part the smallest fraction around just the tip of me, and stop.
Everything I’d held all day dropped into my hips and wanted to go. Half an inch. Half an inch and I’d be in her. I locked down on it — the count, the engineering of not, the last of what I’d been since the garage — and felt it go anyway, quiet, the way a weld goes under load: no warning, just holding and then not holding, and my hips pressing a hair forward against her hand without my say.
“Reese—”
“We can’t beat that with space still between us.” Barely a breath, right at my ear, nothing the vent would carry. “One body. All the way. That’s how we win — the only way we were ever going to.” And lower, under even that: “That’s why it’s me doing it. So it’s me.”
She pushed back onto me.
And the head of me pushed into her — past the tight clench of her, past a give that had never once given, and then through something that tore. I felt it go: a small hot resistance coming apart around me, her whole body flinching hard on the breach, a sound bitten off against my shoulder. Then the wet of it, sudden and warm, slicking down between us where we joined. She’d done it — put her own brother up inside her in the dark and torn through the last of what made her a virgin — and we both knew to the inch what it was, and none of it could be taken back now. An inch in, already bleeding, already past the one line in any of this that had ever scared her.
“That’s you.” Jo, close, the chain snapping taut. “Go. Now. Go.”
No time to finish it. No way to undo it. The chain pulled, and the only thing a body in that frame could do when the chain pulled was walk — so we walked, barely joined, the head of me lodged in the first raw torn inch of her and her clamped white-knuckle around just that much, her blood slicking us warm where we met, out through the curtain I felt drag down my back, into the roar and the weight of the lights and the four hundred people I couldn’t see, the judges’ table somewhere dead ahead, the cameras throwing us up huge on screens I’d never look at.
And the walk drove me the rest of the way in.
Because the walk was the grind was the load-path — hips forward to carry the head that wanted to fall, the same roll we’d drilled a thousand times. Except now that roll had nowhere to spend itself but up into her, and she had to take it or the whole rig went over in front of the judges. So she took it.
The first full step pushed me past the inch she’d torn on, into a grip so tight it closed on me from the head down. The second drove past where her own hand had ever gone, and I felt what no practice run had ever let me feel — her forced to open around something she kept trying to refuse, the walls of her dragging at every part of me and not giving an inch of their own will, clenching and yielding in the same motion because the walk left them no say in it. The third step took me the rest of the way, one long shove on the roll of it that didn’t stop until I was seated in her to the root, my hips driven flush to the backs of her thighs, nothing left between us and nowhere left to put me. And the sound she made out the vent then was one I’d never once heard out of her, low and enormous, dragged up from somewhere under all her training.
—and the hall took it for the monster. Four hundred people heard the beast scream and screamed it back. Not one of them knew they were watching a girl take her own brother to the root under the lights. She caught it in the half-second she had and threw the head back so the scream had somewhere to live, and the crowd ate it, and the judges wrote something down.
