In a large, lush forest, a figure dashed through brush and leaped over fallen logs with graceful elegance, never losing balance. This person was an elf, a being that looked human but with long, pointed ears. The elf had a sleek, slender, feminine body with a flat chest.
The elf stopped running upon discovering tracks in the dirt, then squatted down to examine them. “There they are.” Taking a deep breath, the elf drew a bow and readied an arrow.
“You can do this, Tiafell. It’s time to leave boyhood behind and step into manhood.” Tiafell whispered to himself quietly, encouraging himself. His voice was as feminine as his appearance; soft with a refined, elegant accent.
Tiafell tied his long, dark brown hair into a ponytail, then slowly followed the tracks. His steps barely made a sound, expertly avoiding branches or anything that would crack under his boots and give away his position.
Finding a buck drinking from the river, Tiafell stealthily hid behind some bushes. The majestic creature was blissfully unaware of the elf’s presence, thanks to his silence and the green-and-brown clothing that allowed him to blend with his surroundings. Pulling the arrow back, Tiafell slowly rose to take his shot. The deer lifted its head to look, just as the arrow was released. It let out a painful yelp when the arrow struck its neck and fled for its life.
Tiafell ran after it, following the deer’s blood trail until he found it collapsed in tall grass, near death. He walked around and knelt, cradling its head in his arms.
“You have my sincerest apologies. I’ll make it quick.” Though Tiafell was among the best hunters in his village, he despised hunting and killing. However, meat was a necessity; elves could not survive on berries and fruit alone.
Unsheathing a dagger from his belt, Tiafell held it to the buck’s throat and slashed across. He gently patted its head as the animal weakly thrashed for a few seconds, until it passed away.
“Your sacrifice will not go to waste. Not only will you feed people and provide clothing, but you will also allow me to prove my worth. I will always remember you for this.”
Tiafell moved to the deer’s stomach to gut it. After finishing that unpleasant task, he took a deep breath and, with a grunt, hoisted the carcass over his shoulders. He began slowly walking back home, certain he had what he needed to prove his worth to the other elves.
Later, stopping only for short breaks, Tiafell finally arrived at Elfandall, the Village of Elves, surrounded by tall, thick logs that created a huge wall. It was located deep within the “Endless Forest”, named for its vast, expansive, and seemingly endless size.
As he entered, carrying the deer on his back, Tiafell could hear his fellow villagers whispering amongst themselves. All of them spoke with the same accent.
“I told you he was a monster! How else can you explain him being strong enough to carry a deer carcass on his shoulders like that?”
“I know, it takes two or three elves to carry one of those!”
“You know what he really is, right?”
“Shhh!! We’re not allowed to talk about that! The elders have forbidden it!”
“It pisses me off to know that buck’s head will be mounted on his wall and not mine!”
“I wish he would disappear; he’s a threat to us all!”
“He’s a freak; how else can you explain the way he looks? He’s supposedly ‘male’, yet he’s prettier than every woman here! They say his figure alone makes women jealous!”
“He doesn’t even act or sound like a man! There’s no way that sissy twink isn’t a woman!”
Tiafell peered at them while quietly passing by. “I wish one of you were brave enough to say why you hate me so much.”
Tiafell continued to walk past shops and homes, as well as gawking villagers, on his way to the Hall of Elders to present his bounty. Having heard of his return, the elders gathered in a meeting room to await his arrival, sitting at a wide table. Tiafell entered minutes later and placed the deer carcass onto a separate table.
“There, I’ve brought my assigned bounty...” He breathed heavily, bending over and placing his hands on his knees. “Please be sure that ... none of it goes to waste. Don’t let this noble ... creature’s sacrifice be for nothing...”
“Impressive,” one of the elders spoke up, “you returned after only having been given your assignment seven hours ago. Most elves take at least a day.”
“Truly a worthy accomplishment, indeed,” another commented, leaning forward to rest his elbows on the table. “Rest assured that we will treat this beast with the honor and dignity it deserves.”
“You have earned yourself a job as one of our top hunters. We have high expectations of you.”
“Thank you. So, will I earn the respect of the other elves now?” Tiafell stood upright, having caught his breath. “Will this be enough to convince them that they have no reason to hate or fear me?”
Another elder, a woman, answered, saying, “Your effort is truly commendable; that cannot be argued. But I’m afraid the others made up their minds long ago. I am sorry, but there is little you can do to change their opinions.”
“Besides, you were born outside of the village. Outsiders can never be ‘one of us’.” A chubby elder stated matter-of-factly.
“Why?!” Tiafell shouted, “Why am I so despised, so feared?! Why won’t you or anyone tell me anything?!” He balled his fists and stiffened his arms. “I’ve only ever wanted to be helpful to this village, to be one of you. Is nothing I do enough? Are they jealous because of the way I look? Or is it because of my mother? Am I being punished for something she did?”
An elder angrily stood, tipping his chair over. “Your mother was a harlot who thought she was too good for life in Elfandall! She decided to leave and consort with a...” He stopped himself, earning scornful looks from his peers.
Tiafell stomped his foot, then approached the elders’ table. “Consort with a what? TELL ME!”
“That’s enough!” The female elder commanded. “You have completed your rite of passage. Be happy with that! As for your mother, she broke our most sacred rule— never, under any circumstances, leave the barrier that protects our forest! There are dangers in the outside world that we must protect ourselves from. Every elf who leaves endangers the rest of us!”
Tiafell scoffed. “We elves have lived as willing prisoners inside the barrier for nine hundred years, all because of some ancient war no one remembers. Not one of you has set foot beyond the forest, and yet, you claim to be experts on what’s out there? Don’t make me laugh!”
Another of the elders commanded, “That’s enough, Tiafell! Be grateful that we recognize your talent at all!”
Realizing he was getting nowhere with them, Tiafell turned to leave, but stopped after taking a few steps. “I think I understand why Mother left now, though I may never know why she brought me here...” With that, Tiafell stormed out of the room, leaving the angry elders to fume. Waiting outside for him were two younger elves, a male and a female, both with blonde hair.
“How did it go, Tiafell?” Asked the male with eager anticipation.
“What’s wrong?” The female noticed Tiafell’s aggravated expression.
“Come with me,” Tiafell responded cryptically.
The younger elves followed him to his hut. Tiafell slammed the door shut behind them. “Alto, Vasati, listen to me,” he began. “I can’t stay in this village anymore. Everyone except for you two hates me. They refuse to tell me why, though I believe it has something to do with the fact that I was born outside the forest. All I know is that my mother left, married someone out there, and died shortly after bringing me here as a baby. Everyone is forbidden from talking about it, as if doing so would bring danger to Elfandall. I want to know who, or what, I really am, but I’ll never find answers if I stay here!”
“Tiafell,” Vasati said, placing her hand on Tiafell’s back. “Alto and I have suspected you were different, somehow, but we never knew you came from outside the village.”
“How could we have known? The older elves refuse to talk about you, and most of the younger ones only hate you because their parents do.” Alto frowned, feeling deep sorrow for his friend. “When are you leaving?”
“I knew you two would understand.” Tiafell smiled a little. He took a long, deep breath, pausing a few moments before speaking again. “I’ll need time to prepare; a few months, maybe a year. I have come of age and passed my rite of passage, for what it was worth. But if I want a chance of surviving outside the Endless Forest, I must hone my hunting skills and learn how to fight. No one knows what’s out there, so I must be prepared to face anything. Would you two consider coming with me? I know it’s asking a lot, but still, I would love for you to join me.”
Vasati gave him a downcast smile. “I appreciate the offer, but Alto and I can’t leave our families behind.”
Alto nodded in confirmation.
