Unable to process what had just unfolded before her eyes, a few streaks of red blood lingering on the side observation window of the RV served as a ruthless reminder of the grim reality.
Her survival instinct kicked in, although her legs were on the verge of giving out, she forced herself up, desperately crawling toward the cabinet where the keys and self-defense items were kept in emergency. Reason screamed inside her head that this forest was now a deadly hunting ground. Silas’s cryptic words from earlier struck like a heavy blow, smashing her naive and foolish complacency, forcing Mara into immediate action.
Trembling, she rushed to the driver’s seat up front, struggling to choke down the panic-stricken sobs deep in her chest, frantically trying to insert the key to turn the engine over as fast as possible. If the killer outside was currently busy disposing of Anna, she might still have a split-second chance to escape.
BANG!!!
Another gunshot rang out, tearing through the dark night rain like a bottomless, inescapable abyss. The sudden jolt made the key slip right from her hand, dropping down beneath the brake pedal.
Cursing helplessly in sheer panic, Mara fumbled around blindly on her knees, continuously praying to God above for protection, pleading that no other bullet would be aimed her way.
- Mara? Mara...??? Are you in there? It’s me, Wade Mercer.
From a distance, a series of splashing footsteps echoed over, indicating that the newcomer had run over with all his might after opening fire on someone not long ago. Perhaps that gunshot just now belonged to Wade. There was a high chance he had fired a warning shot to drive off the monster from earlier to protect her.
Exhaling softly to pull herself together, Mara reach out with a trembling hand to switch on the RV’s exterior light to get a clear look at the forest manager. His arrival, along with that rifle, gave her a slight sense of reassurance.
- Oh Wade, thank goodness you arrived. Just now...
- I saw that lunatic. Unlucky for Anna, she must have been terrified ... Unfortunate girl ... Don’t worry, Mara, after he saw me fire off a shot, he had the sense to leave her body behind and bolt deep into the woods. Now, could you lend me a raincoat? We need to ... you know ... clean things up for Anna a bit.
- Alright ... okay, hold on a second ... Wade, you should ... Suddenly cutting her sentence short, Mara froze in sharp vigilance. She wondered why Wade’s voice lacked the expected panic. This was about a human life. And, more importantly than anything, he instantly knew the person shot just a few minutes ago was Anna, not her or anyone else.
“The campsite lost power, in the middle of this pitch-black forest at night, how did he know it was Anna the moment he ran over? I’m the one closest to the vehicle radius, aren’t I?”
- Mara?.
Wade’s call suddenly shifted to a cold, questioning tone. That sudden drop in pitch felt like an electric current running straight from the top of Mara’s head down to her feet. Looking out through the small window pane still smeared with red blood mixed with rainwater, her grey-blue eyes widened even further in horror.
A shiny object, coiled around the stock of his rifle, caught the refraction of light from the lamp. It was a delicate necklace, highlighted by a pendant shaped like a bow with a sparkling white gemstone. It was a matching set with the leather hair tie she had picked up earlier this afternoon. The coincidence, along with the memory of the leather edge stained with a dark brown mark, instantly awakened her mind’s absolute defense mechanisms.
- Mara, can you hear me? Could you lend me a raincoat?.
Wade’s voice drifted farther away, then slowly circled around her RV. It seemed he was walking around her right side before she even realized it.
- I ... I don’t have one in my vehicle ... Could you head back to your house to grab another one? I ... I also ... don’t want to step outside...
- Then where’s your boyfriend? You said you two came together, right? I haven’t heard a peep out of him this whole time ... Not even before this ... Mara, did you really come here with a boyfriend?.
That sharp, frigid voice sounded like a freezing wind rising from hell, dragging her trembling heart down even deeper. He had uncovered her lie. And right now, she was officially trapped in a suffocating, terrifying snare.
- You know, Mara ... women who lie often get punished. No matter how pretty and attractive you are, I really don’t like being lied to. That’s very naughty. This is my forest. Whatever I say is the law. Now, be a good girl and open the door. I won’t hurt you if you know how to listen.
That lunatic had finally shown his true colors. He was the killer from earlier. Wade had played a cat-and-mouse game when he fired the first shot, and then slyly ran in a circle to fire a second shot to pretend to be a savior coming to her rescue. That self-directed show was utterly brilliant. Had it not been for her inherent caution from her journalism background, Mara might have naively invited the wolf inside without a second thought. From killer to savior, and turning back into a killer once more, this beast in human skin really knew how to act.
- If you don’t invite me in, things are going to get ugly. I’m warning you ahead of time, little sweetie.
Aiming for the most fragile part of the vehicle, Wade swiftly used his rifle stock to smash the window frame right behind Mara’s back.
SLAM!
The entire RV shuddered. A web of white cracks instantly spread across the glass surface. Through the rain outside, Mara caught a glimpse of Wade’s terrifying face gradually distorting behind the layers of fractured glass. Gone was the friendly smile of the man who had chatted with her at the campsite. His face was now ice-cold, his bright blue eyes gleaming beneath his soaked hat brim. In his hands was the rifle, its stock raised once more.
Mara was practically frozen solid, “No...”
CRASH!!!
The glass shattered completely. Small shards sprayed into the vehicle. She screamed, hastily crawling back as Wade used his rifle stock to sweep away the remaining glass caught on the frame. An arm thrust inside immediately. His hand fumbled around wildly, searching for the door latch.
- Mara!!! - Wade’s voice echoed through the broken window, terrifyingly ecstatic - Do you know what the funnest Halloween event is today? It’s the hunter-and-prey roleplay service courtesy of the Mercer campsite. I saved this main act just for you. Except it’s going to involve some real blood. Heheh ... don’t make this harder for both of us.
Mara backed up close to the kitchen cabinet, her eyes never leaving the hand tracing along the vehicle wall. Then his fingers found the lock. A faint click sounded, and the side door popped open.
Cold wind and rainwater instantly flooded the cabin. Only then did Mara understand, Anna was never the main target. She was the one he came back for. And then, right as the crazy hunter’s upper torso lunged inside, perfectly timed as he raised his face, Mara snatched the bear spray hidden behind her back.
She pulled the trigger. A scorching, pepper-laced stream sprayed directly into Wade’s face. He let out a howl, violently jerking back as both hands instantly flew to cover his eyes. The rifle struck hard against the vehicle wall before dropping onto the doorstep.
Mara didn’t wait another second. She backed away, turned around, frantically yanked open the side door of the RV, and bolted outside.
Cold rain lashed directly at her face like needles. The mud was slick beneath her feet. Behind her, Wade was still coughing violently and cursing in agony.
- You fucking bitch! You dare play dirty with me??? I’m going to kill you!!!. Mara ran like crazy, not daring to look back for a single second. She broke away from the RV’s lights, crossed the waterlogged patch of land, and plunged straight into the pitch-black pine forest, where the cold wind, freezing rain, and tree shadows instantly swallowed everything whole.
