Mara practically bolted back to her campsite at the speed of light. As she ran relentlessly, she was terrified of hearing rushed footsteps and a deep, dark laugh suddenly pursuing her from behind. Thousands of questions raced through her head. She abruptly remembered the twisted face of the gas station owner, where she had stopped briefly on her way to Black Pine.

That bald, chubby guy had tried hard to advise her against venturing into the forest on the east side of town. Over the past few years, numerous mysterious disappearances had occurred there without any answers. Most of the victims were passing tourists, hikers, and even hunters from other regions coming to seek new experiences.

- That is the cursed land belonging to the Mercer family. Those two brothers are extremely stubborn, we advised them not to open any more useless services, but they refused to listen. There are still a few fools tired of living like you who creep over there, only to drag three or four police cars right behind them. You had better know how to value your life.

“Value your life”, huh. This was the exact moment when that advice became the most meaningless to her. In a state of utter desolation, Mara had simply stepped on the gas and driven away before his helpless shake of the head. At one point, she had thought she could drive straight there, take a heavy dose of sleeping pills, and remain still forever. At least, that would still be a peaceful death among the deep wilderness that she had always longed for.

Yet, returning to the present moment, after experiencing that suffocating moment of oppression brought by a total stranger, her legs briefly turned to jelly, and her beautiful face drained of all color. It turned out that death, when drawing near, felt so violent.

She could sense that Silas was an immensely dangerous entity. Lingering around that flawless body was an unholy smell of blood. It was terrifying, yet equally intoxicating.

“Oh, what on earth am I thinking? Do I still find him attractive? Mara, you are truly crazy, he could have snapped this neck of yours with one hand back then.”

Curses filled her thoughts as she packed her belongings, preparing to set off and flee immediately, when suddenly she jumped out of her skin once more at the sound of someone knocking on the exterior of her vehicle.

- Mara, are you alright? On my way back from hunting earlier, I saw you running as if in a panic. Did something happen? Can I help with anything?

It was Wade, the co-owner of Black Pine campsite, the hunter she had met the previous night. He was standing outside the vehicle, his rifle slung over his shoulder as usual.

- Hello, Wade. It is nothing, I ... ran into a snake along the walking path.

She regained her composure, slowly opening the vehicle door to greet him.

- Oh, is that so, sorry about that, since this is a dense forest, there are occasionally a few slithering around in the tall grass. That is quite hard to avoid, but most of them are not poisonous. My brother and I have put careful preventative measures in place for the walking areas. Just make sure you do not wander into overly dense brush.

That gentle, friendly smile quickly soothed the panicked mood inside Mara’s heart. After a brief chat, she gradually shifted to a delicate topic, trying not to reveal any flaw that might offend the man.

She could not ask the manager straight to his face whether his family forest harbored a serial killer. Everything was still mere speculation. That Silas guy himself had never mentioned anything about any killing.

- Um, Wade, does this area allow outside hunters to ... pick up things or build their own cabins?
