The next morning, Mara woke up inside a warm, cozy bed, her absolute favorite part of the RV, a space she had meticulously arranged. The oversized bed occupied the entire rear section, supported beneath by a thick, firm mattress and topped with a cloud of soft, flower-scented pillows and blankets. It was a private little sanctuary that invited sheer laziness and self-indulgence, luxuries she had longed for through nearly eight years of slaving away in the corporate grind.
Gently sliding the window curtain aside, she snuggled her pillow and quietly took in the sunrise over the lake, framed by dense pine woods. No blaring alarms, no frantic work calls, no choking smog or city clamor. Just her, sitting quietly with nature, slowly letting the healing calm soak in. This deserted haven was truly a paradise for a soul craving solitary peace.
After a light breakfast of a pre-made sandwich and an iced milk coffee, Mara decided to take a lazy stroll around the lake to breathe in the crisp, fresh air. She secretly hoped to forage for wild mushrooms or sweet berries along the trail, just like those famous camping vloggers did. Her investigative journalist instincts still ran deep, and she desperately craved a hands-on field experience in the wild.
- Ungh.
As she walked, a muffled, tightly suppressed groan broke the quiet, coming from a nearby bush. Stepping closer to investigate, she spotted a colossal, muscular man with healthy, sun-bronzed skin. He was sitting on a large rock, his left arm bleeding heavily. The wound looked like a deep, ragged slice caused by something sharp and jagged.
Mara naturally shrank back at the bloody sight. Yet, seeing the pained, uncomfortable furrow of his brows hidden behind messy strands of long, black hair, her innate compassion stirred. She gathered her courage and took a few steps forward.
- Are you okay? That looks pretty serious. If you need a hand, I would be happy to help. I am Mara, I am camping across the lake.
The moment the man turned his head, Mara’s heart skipped a beat. His cold, strikingly handsome face was enough to steal the breath right out of anyone who laid eyes on him.
He appeared to be around thirty-two or thirty-three, defined by a face so flawlessly sculpted it looked carved from stone. Dark brown eyes radiated a piercing chill, paired with a high, straight nose bridge and full, sensual lips. Though a thin, long scar ran from his right temple down toward his cheekbone, rather than making him look menacing, it bestowed upon him the rugged aura of an ancient, battle-tested warrior.
Dressed in a black tank top and slim-fit camo cargo pants, his broad back and massive, chiseled chest exuded an imposing presence that easily overwhelmed the space around him. Glancing down at his endless legs anchored by high-end leather boots, Mara could not help but think it would be a tragic waste if this man was not working as a professional model.
- Do you have bandages to dress the wound.
His voice was low, deep, and dripping with raw masculinity. Yet his entire posture emitted a dark, heavy aura, like an invisible wall shutting everyone out.
- I have a first-aid kit in my RV. Problem is, it is parked on the other side of the lake. We would have to walk quite a distance.
- Then let us go to my cabin, if you do not mind.
The sheer depth of his injury seemed to have temporarily broken down his guard. Mara could still sense a lingering flare of anger hovering around him, but she chose to be understanding. Men were like wild beasts, once wounded, it was only natural for them to grow feral and short-tempered.
“Besides, he is drop-dead gorgeous. Exactly my type. Oh well, who knows? Maybe this will turn into something interesting.”
The man’s frame was terrifyingly massive, she gauged he had to be nearly six-foot-six. Standing beside him, the pair looked hilariously like a zoo keeper paired with a grizzly bear. Mara knew there was no way her small shoulders could offer him any real support. So, they set off in a slow, single-file march toward a raised mound, where a small cabin lay hidden behind thick, tall grass.
Nestled deep in the pine forest, the cabin was small and low-slung, built from dark logs faded by years of sun and rain. Moss clung to sections of the pitched roof, and the front featured only a narrow wooden porch with a weathered chair and a neatly stacked pile of firewood against the wall.
From the outside, the place looked virtually abandoned, but stepping inside revealed a completely different story. It consisted of a single main room: a twin bed pushed against the wall, a heavy wooden table, a wood-burning stove, and a few shelves stocked with canned goods and hunting gear. Everything was minimalist, spotless, and impeccably organized.
