We started slow because no matter what I had said in the driveway, I was still what I was: extremely inexperienced, nervous, scared in a way that lived under the wanting and did not cancel it. He felt it. I could tell by how he kissed me at first, like he was asking a question with his mouth instead of taking an answer I had already given.
The first kisses were tentative. His lips on mine, careful, the burned hand staying off my skin so he would not drag gauze across me.
