The mirror did not negotiate.
My eyes were swollen and red-rimmed. My cheeks looked blotched from crying and from his mouth. What had been a mess when I had walked into the bathroom was now a total disaster.
I thought: this is not a face a person finds cute, attractive, let alone gorgeous.
I thought it the way I thought most true-sounding lies, which is to say, with confidence.
Gorgeous was a word for the blonde on his phone. Hot was a word for girls who knew what to do with a body. Beautiful was a word Sue used on her daughter and on sunsets and on things that did not kneel over a toilet after dinner and call it taking care of business. He had used all three of those words on me two minutes after seeing the evidence. That was either kindness so large it made me question his mental state, or pity wearing a nicer shirt, or a boy who had walked in on something ugly and reached for the first soft sentences he could find so I would stop making those sounds that were pouring out of me.
I wanted it to be the first one. I could not afford to let it be the first one. If I believed him and he was only being decent, I would have to fall off a higher place than the one I was already standing on.
