During the drive back from her parents’ house, Sallie tried but failed to rest. My car was too noisy, the roads were too uneven, and replaying the arguments troubled her. I knew she was full of self-criticism, but I didn’t know what to do about it.
When I asked, “What can I do?” she snapped at me.
“Guys always want to fix things instead of just listening. I’m sorry, I just need to vent. And chocolate. And Grandma’s arms around me. Oh, Jason, my family is so screwed up.”
“Wait, you haven’t met my family. When we get married, the only people who will show up will be your Patsy and my grandma, who will be giving both of us away.”
“Jason, pull over!”
I diverted into a strip mall parking lot.
“Sallie? You OK? Carsick? Need to puke?”
“I’m fine. Yes, Jason.”
“Yes?”
“You said married, I said yes. It’s not complicated. I love you.”
“Well, I love you too. But we haven’t ... I haven’t...”
“It’s alright, sweetie. I know we have a lot to talk about first. And we might want to finish our degrees. Or you might meet someone better...”
Her voice trailed off, leaving only the sound of traffic.
“Sallie Jeanne Collins, I never ever want to hear you say that. Have I given you any reason to doubt me?”
“Well, no.”
“Then, as kindly as possible, I invite you to shut the fuck up. A kiss would be in order, don’t you think?”
She practically climbed over the center console to attack me. I was in no mood to stop her.
In front of mi abuela’s house, Sallie got out of the passenger seat, slowly and stiffly.
“Are you alright?”
“I think I pulled a muscle trying to get on top of you in that parking lot. Would you like to massage me later?”
“Does the pope shit in the woods?”
“Don’t say that in the house, she’ll hit you with a frying pan.”
I remembered then that she had a picture of the guy on her wall—including his goofy hat. Good advice.
“I need to be serious, Jason. I’m going to be asking her for financial help.”
“Yeah. Let’s go inside.”
Sallie winced while going up the front steps. I left her in the living room so I could go get her some pills and a glass of water. When I came back out, Grandma was embracing Sallie, who was crying again while trying to recount what had happened at her parents’ house.
