The next morning, we were discussing her trip. “Please. You’re not going home to them without me, Sallie.”
I expected her parents would do everything they could to break us up and remove her from college. Thanks to Grandma, they’d be doing Sallie a favor by forcing a decision on her. She was well past the age of being her parents’ property to be ‘given away’ in marriage.
After a lot of arguing, we decided to drive there in my car, as Sallie feared they might confiscate her car as part of keeping her under their thumb.
“They paid for my car.”
“I don’t care, Sallie. It was a gift, and you don’t have to return it to them. It’s a two-hour drive to get there, so let’s get moving.”
As we got underway, I stayed quiet but glanced at her in the passenger seat. She sat stiffly, like someone bracing for a dangerous but necessary operation. I suppose she knew she’d put off facing what was coming for too long. To her, it must have felt like a kind of divorce from her parents.
As we rattled down the highway in my old car, Sallie told me many stories about her parents, her childhood, and Patsy. I could hear her misgivings. The rupture with her parents was going to happen. She acknowledged it, but understandably still regretted losing her family relationships.
“I was Dad’s little girl, and he always showed his pride in me. They went all out for my sweet sixteen party, making sure that the whole community could see me all made up and dressed like a princess. It was pretty obvious they hoped a suitable male would start thinking about me as marriage material.”
“They hoped to marry you off before age eighteen?” I asked.
“That’s right. Patsy married at seventeen, but her marriage was such a disaster that I avoided any proposals until nineteen—when I enrolled at the university.”
“Sallie, I’m very grateful that you refused all those young studs desperate for you. I have to believe they weren’t all as bad as your cousin’s husband.”
“It wasn’t like that. There weren’t that many, and they definitely weren’t studs. I’m fairly certain two of them were gay and being forced into marriages that would have been disasters.”
“I need to take you to a gay bar. You’ll see some extremely studly guys dressed all in leather and spikes.”
“That’s a terrible idea, Jason. You know about my buddy Drew. I seem to attract gay men; I don’t know why.”
“I know why,” I grinned, leaning closer. “It’s your trim little ass, those broad shoulders, your powerful, burly arms, and your massive, bulging pecs.”
Sallie stiffened, her eyes narrowing. “I swear to God, if you don’t shut up right now, I’m going to withhold sex for a month.”
“No, you won’t,” I laughed, quickly softening my tone and reaching over to squeeze her knee. “Besides, you know I’m teasing. Every part of your gorgeous, perfectly womanly body is a masterpiece.”
She let out a long breath, fighting back a smile. “Just drive the car, Jason.”
Sallie asked me to park several blocks away from her parents’ address.
“Jason, I started this drive fearing a disaster, a failure. I thought my parents would put me back into their model of submissiveness. I tried to give you some perspective so you’d be better prepared. But what I kept coming back to? Grandma and her promise. And you, Jason. You don’t want me to submit. You never have—not even in private. And when I need you to be strong, you’re right there. I could have come down here by myself and faced the music.”
“Yeah. Not happening,” I growled.
“If I have you with me, I can face anything.”
I started the car again, and we drove the last blocks to park in front of her parents’ house. The engine coughed to a stop, and we sat there for a little longer as Sallie appeared to steel herself.
“Jason, I want you to stand behind me on the front walk and keep quiet. Let me do the talking, at least to start.”
We got about halfway to the house when the front door burst open and Sallie’s mom came rushing out, calling her daughter’s name. Her traditional outfit didn’t surprise me: an old-fashioned plaid dress hanging down near her ankles under a white apron pulled snug over her hefty body.
