My name is Jason Crow. The scientific family of corvids, which includes ravens and crows, has nothing to do with COVID-19. COrona VIrus Disease, identified in 2019, also has nothing to do with me, except I was also 19 in 2019.
Abby, my girlfriend at the time, made all these stupid connections, laughed in my face, and dumped me. Since quarantines were starting, there wasn’t much point in arguing about it.
Before Abby left, she listed her many reasons why she was dissatisfied with me. I wasn’t prepared to argue; I had no experience before her. No basis for comparison. Honestly, there was so much other disruption during the pandemic that I simply put my social life away, leaving it to gather cobwebs.
Sallie put her hand on my arm to stop my list of complaints.
“Jason, I can tell by your voice and your expressions you believed Abby. You just accepted all this?”
“Well, yeah. Like I said, I was ignorant and inexperienced. Just when I thought I was getting somewhere, she told me I was wasting her time.”
“You know, sweetie, we women have a name for girls like her.”
“A name?”
“Yeah. Cunt. Satisfying me is only the beginning of your many talents. But, please, go on with your story. I love your deep voice; it soothes me.”
“During quarantine, what I could do was read and study. My high school, in a low-income area, lacked some of the ‘college prep’ courses I needed for a college application. I needed math, English, and chemistry. I believed I could test out of the foreign language requirement because I was fluent in Spanish courtesy of mi abuela (my grandmother) who I often read to because of her poor eyesight.
“When she found out about Abby, she called her una víbora, a viper. I had to agree. I guess my feelings then were obvious. As time passed and the vaccines reached the public, I began to think about attending a four-year college. I’d been enrolled online at the community college, earning credits toward an associate’s degree.
“During a Zoom call with a counselor at the state university, I agreed on a plan to ‘matriculate’ as a junior using my transcripts. Our state promised that qualified AA (or AS) graduates were eligible for enrollment in the campuses of the state university system.”
Sallie rolled her eyes at me. “Hmph! You enroll already as a junior, having paid far less tuition than regular students like me.”
