The next day I was at Terry’s house about 11am. She had taken off from work and called the hospital. Mikey was doing fine but had to be checked out by a doctor before he could leave. He had an appointment at 3 pm. I offered to take Terry to lunch just to kill some time before we had to go to the hospital and she accepted. We headed over to the City Café. It was busy with the lunch crowd but we found an empty booth and sat down. We were getting a lot of stares.
“Everyone is wondering what you are doing with a lesbian on your arm.”
“No, they are not. They are staring at a big black guy with a beautiful girl on his arm.”
“I see why Mona was in love with you. You make a girl feel like a princess. Were you always like this?”
“Maybe, I don’t know. I was different back then.”
About that time Patrick comes over and sits down with us. “You going to introduce me to your new girlfriend?” he asks.
“Patrick this is Terry. She is Mikey’s sister, you know the guy who got beat up last night. We are on the way to the hospital to get him.” He extends a big meaty hand to her and she takes it. “You know your brother is damn lucky Zulu came along when he did. I think they were going to kill him. At least cut him up. But when this guy showed up with that .45 of his they surrendered pretty quickly. What can I get you for lunch?” We ordered the hot roast beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy.
After we finished, we still had a couple of hours before we had to go to the hospital so we decided to stop by and see Mona. As we parked at the courthouse, she suggested that I leave Leona in the glove box since we had to pass through metal detectors to get into the building. I locked her in the glove box then locked the truck and we walked in. I still set off the metal detectors and had to pull my jean leg up to show the leg.
In Mona’s office she greeted me with a kiss on the cheek just like she did Terry.
“Zu took me to lunch,” she said as we sat down. Mona looked jealous but I was not sure of who. I explained I was here to make Leona legal and she called her secretary and asked for the paperwork. In 30 minutes, we had it all filled out. She would get the proper signatures and get it back to me in a few days. As we got up to leave she asked if we had heard about those two bikers. After the sheriff took them to jail, he got a search warrant for their bikes. In the saddle bags on the bikes was about $50,000 in oxycodone. They are going to jail for a long time. Mikey was not being charged with anything even though it was alleged that he owed the bikers for some pills they had fronted him and was being given a beat down for non-payment.
Terry said she did not know what she was going to do with him. She realized he had a drug problem, but he was in pain and nothing seemed to help but the illegal pain killers. She was afraid if it went on much longer he would start using heroin to take care of the problem. Just then I had an idea. I excused myself from the office and went into the hall. I called Dove and told her the problem. I asked if she thought she could help. She said she was willing to give it a try. She agreed to meet me at Mona’s house around 5pm. I went back into the office. I did not tell the girls my idea.
We talked a little more about old times then it was time to go get Mikey. At the hospital (Leona was still in the truck) the doctor was late of course but we finally got Mikey back in the truck and on the way to the house. He wanted to stop at a drug store to get his prescription pain killers, but I told him we needed to get him home and that I would come back later and get the drugs. I did not want him high when Dove got there.
Terry fixed him a sandwich since he said he was hungry and he was just starting to eat when Dove drove up. Both he and Terry looked surprised.
“This is my cousin. Dove meet Terry and Mikey”.
We sat in the living room as Mikey finished eating.
Mikey came into the living room and announced he was going to lay down and then he reminded me to go get his painkillers as I had promised. As he headed down the hall to his bedroom Dove got up and followed him. I often have wondered what he thought was happening when Dove followed him into his room and shut the door. She was in there about 45 minutes and when she came out Mona had gotten home and was sitting with us in the living room.
“What’s going on?” She asked.
“Dove is trying to help Mikey manage his pain thru hypnosis,” I answered. Mona just looked at me like I suggested some type of voodoo. About that time Dove walked back into the room.
“He is asleep right now. I think he will sleep all night so try not to disturb him. I’ll be back in the morning. Go to the drug store and get his pills for him but I doubt he will need them.”
She waited until I got back visiting with the two girls. Then after many thanks and a couple of kisses on the cheek she followed me home. I got out and went to her driver’s side window. “I have to get home. Joe and Peg will be worried about me. Don’t worry about Mikey, I am pretty sure I can fix him. I’ll see you tomorrow. Oh, before I forget both of those girls are in love with you.” She rolled up her window and drove off leaving me with my mouth hanging open.
The next morning, I was at Terry’s house at eight o’clock and Dove’s car was in the driveway. As Terry let me in, I asked about Mikey.
“He had a good night, I guess. He slept all night and this morning he heard us in the kitchen making breakfast and came in to eat. He said he was hungry. He ate a big breakfast then Dove showed up and wanted to talk to him again. They are in his room now and have been for about 15 minutes. Before I forget Mona wants you to stop by her office when you can.”
She got me a cup of coffee and we sat in the living room talking about her. I told her I heard Mona’s story and she heard mind, but we had not talked about her.
