The week after the proposal, something shifted.
Jonah noticed it first during movie night at the Bellamy house. Mara had suggested they watch something together as a family—her word, family—and Jonah had agreed, thinking it would be low-key. Popcorn, a comedy, maybe some wine.
Instead, Tessa sat on his lap.
Not beside him. Not on the arm of the couch. On his lap, her ass pressed against his thighs, her back against his chest, her hair brushing his jaw every time she moved.
Jonah froze.
“Tessa,” he said quietly. “There’s plenty of room on the couch.”
“I’m comfortable here.” Tessa didn’t look back at him. She shifted her weight, grinding slightly against him, and reached for the popcorn bowl on the coffee table. Her movement made her shorts ride up, exposing more of her thighs.
Jonah’s hands hovered uselessly at his sides. He didn’t know where to put them. On the couch? On her waist? Nowhere felt safe.
Mara sat on the other end of the couch with Iris curled against her side. She glanced over at Jonah and Tessa and smiled. “You two look cozy.”
“We are,” Tessa said, leaning back harder against Jonah’s chest.
Jonah’s pulse kicked up. He could feel the heat of her body through his shirt, the curve of her ass pressing against his groin. If he moved wrong, if his body responded the way it wanted to, she’d feel it. She’d know.
Maybe she already did.
“Tessa,” Jonah said again, his voice firmer this time. “Get up.”
Tessa turned her head to look at him over her shoulder, her eyes wide and innocent. “Why? Am I too heavy?”
“No. You’re just—” Jonah stopped. He didn’t know how to finish that sentence without making everything worse. “You’re making me uncomfortable.”
“Oh.” Tessa’s smile didn’t falter. She stood slowly, deliberately, her body sliding against his as she rose. “Sorry, Jonah. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
She sat on the floor instead, cross-legged in front of the couch, and didn’t look at him again for the rest of the movie.
But Jonah couldn’t focus. His skin felt too tight. His chest ached. He kept replaying the way Tessa had moved, the way she’d looked at him, the way Mara had smiled like it was all perfectly normal.
When the movie ended, Jonah made an excuse and left.
Two days later, Iris knocked on his door.
Jonah opened it to find her standing on his porch in an oversized T-shirt and bare feet, her hair damp and tangled. She looked upset.
“What’s wrong?” Jonah asked.
“The shower drain’s clogged,” Iris said. “Mom’s at work, and Tessa’s out with friends. I don’t know how to fix it.”
Jonah hesitated. “Can’t you wait for your mom to get home?”
“I have to leave for class in an hour,” Iris said. “Please, Jonah. I just need help.”
Jonah sighed. “All right. Let me grab some tools.”
He followed Iris across the lawn and into the Bellamy house. The air inside smelled like vanilla and something floral—the same scent Mara wore. Iris led him upstairs to the bathroom, and Jonah’s stomach tightened when he saw the state of it.
The shower was still running, water pooling on the tile floor. Steam filled the room. Iris’s towel hung on the back of the door, and her clothes sat in a heap on the counter.
“I was in the middle of showering when it backed up,” Iris said. She stood in the doorway, arms crossed over her chest. The T-shirt clung to her damp skin, and Jonah could see the outline of her body underneath—her breasts, her hips, the curve of her waist.
He looked away. “Turn off the water.”
Iris reached into the shower and twisted the knob. The water stopped. Silence filled the room, broken only by the drip of the faucet.
Jonah knelt beside the drain and pulled out his tools. He worked quickly, unscrewing the cover and pulling out a clump of hair and soap scum. A simple fix. Five minutes, tops.
Behind him, Iris shifted. “Thanks for doing this.”
“No problem,” Jonah said without looking up.
“You’re really good at fixing things.”
“It’s just a drain.”
“Still.” Iris’s voice was soft, almost shy. “You’re good at taking care of us.”
Jonah’s hands stilled. He didn’t like the way she said us. He didn’t like the way she was standing so close, the way the steam made the air feel thick and suffocating.
He finished the job, screwed the cover back on, and stood. “All set.”
“Thank you,” Iris said. She stepped closer, her eyes locked on his. “You’re always so helpful, Jonah. I don’t know what we’d do without you.”
“You’d figure it out.” He moved toward the door, but Iris didn’t step aside.
“Can I ask you something?”
“What?”
“Do you think about me?”
Jonah’s chest tightened. “Iris—”
“Because I think about you,” Iris said. Her voice dropped to barely a whisper. “All the time.”
Jonah’s pulse roared in his ears. He forced himself to meet her gaze, to keep his voice steady. “You’re Mara’s daughter. You’re going to be my stepdaughter. That’s all.”
Iris’s expression didn’t change. She just smiled, slow and knowing, and stepped aside. “Okay, Jonah.”
Jonah left the bathroom, his hands shaking, and didn’t look back.
That night, Jonah drove to Mara’s house and asked to talk.
They sat in her living room, the house quiet and empty. Tessa and Iris were out, Mara explained. They had the place to themselves.
“What’s going on?” Mara asked, curling up beside him on the couch.
Jonah took a breath. “It’s the girls.”
Mara’s expression stayed neutral. “What about them?”
“They’re crossing boundaries,” Jonah said. “Tessa sat on my lap during the movie. Iris asked me to help her in the bathroom while she was barely dressed. They’re—” He paused, searching for the right words. “They’re acting like they want something from me that I can’t give them.”
Mara stayed quiet for a moment. Then she reached out and took his hand. “Jonah, they’re just comfortable with you. That’s a good thing.”
“It doesn’t feel good,” Jonah said. “It feels wrong.”
“Why?” Mara asked gently. “Because you’re attracted to them?”
Jonah’s face burned. “No. Because they’re your daughters.”
“They’re adults,” Mara said. “And they love you. They feel safe with you. That’s all this is.”
“It’s more than that,” Jonah said. “Tessa was grinding on me. Iris was practically naked. They’re testing me, Mara. And I don’t know why.”
Mara sighed and squeezed his hand. “Jonah, you spent twenty years in the Army. You’re used to rigid structures, clear rules, defined boundaries. But families don’t work like that. Families are messy. They’re affectionate. They’re close.”
“This isn’t normal closeness,” Jonah said.
“What’s normal?” Mara asked. She shifted closer, her thigh pressing against his. “You’re going to be their stepfather. They want to feel connected to you. They want to know you’re not going anywhere.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” Jonah said. “But that doesn’t mean—”
