Three months in, Jonah knew.
He’d spent twenty years making life-or-death decisions under pressure, reading terrain, assessing threats, trusting his gut when intelligence failed. This felt different. Clearer. Mara Bellamy wasn’t a mission or a risk assessment. She was the first thing in two decades that felt like home.
He bought the ring on a Tuesday afternoon—a simple platinum band with a single diamond. Nothing ostentatious. Mara wasn’t the type to want flash. She wanted presence, attention, commitment. Jonah could give her all three.
He planned to propose Friday night at Marcello’s, the Italian place downtown where they’d had their third date. He made the reservation, rehearsed what he’d say, then told himself to stop overthinking it.
She’d say yes. He was certain.
Friday came. Jonah picked Mara up at seven, and she stepped out of her house in a black dress that hugged every curve. The neckline dipped just low enough, and the hem stopped mid-thigh, showing off her long legs. She wore heels that made her hips sway with every step.
“You look incredible,” Jonah said as she slid into the passenger seat.
“You clean up pretty well yourself.” Mara leaned over to kiss him, her hand settling on his thigh, fingers trailing upward just enough to make his pulse kick.
Dinner was perfect. They talked, laughed, shared a bottle of wine. Mara’s hand found his across the table, her thumb stroking the inside of his wrist. Every touch felt deliberate, charged. By the time dessert arrived, Jonah’s heart hammered against his ribs.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the small velvet box.
Mara’s eyes widened. Her lips parted.
Jonah opened the box and set it on the table between them. “Mara, I’ve spent most of my life moving from place to place, never staying long enough to build anything real. I thought that’s just how it was.” He paused, his throat tight. “Then I met you. You make me want to stay. You make me want to build something that lasts. Marry me.”
Mara’s hand flew to her mouth. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over and streaking down her cheeks. “Yes,” she whispered. Then louder, her voice breaking: “Yes. God, yes, Jonah.”
She stood, and Jonah stood with her. She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him hard, her body pressed against his, her fingers tangling in his hair. The other diners clapped. Someone whistled. Jonah didn’t care. He slid the ring onto her finger, and Mara held her hand up to the light, laughing and crying at the same time.
“I love you,” she said, her forehead pressed to his. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too,” Jonah said.
And he meant it.
They drove back to Cedar Brook with Mara’s hand on Jonah’s thigh, her fingers tracing slow circles that made it hard to focus on the road. She kept looking at the ring, tilting her hand to catch the light, smiling like she couldn’t quite believe it was real.
“We have to tell the girls,” Mara said as they pulled into the neighborhood. “Tonight. I can’t wait.”
“You sure?” Jonah asked. “It’s late.”
“They’ll kill me if I don’t tell them immediately,” Mara said, laughing. “Trust me.”
Jonah parked in his driveway, and they walked across the lawn to the Bellamy house. Mara unlocked the front door and called out, “Girls! Come downstairs. Now.”
Footsteps thundered from the second floor. Tessa appeared first, wearing an oversized T-shirt and shorts, her hair pulled into a messy bun. Iris followed close behind, barefoot in a tank top and pajama pants.
“What’s going on?” Tessa asked, her eyes flicking between Mara and Jonah.
Mara held up her left hand, the diamond catching the light.
Tessa screamed.
It was a high, piercing sound that made Jonah wince. Iris gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. Then both girls rushed forward, crashing into Mara and Jonah with enough force to nearly knock them over.
“Oh my God!” Tessa shrieked, grabbing Mara’s hand and pulling it close to her face. “Oh my God, Mom, it’s beautiful!”
“You’re getting married!” Iris said, her voice trembling. She turned to Jonah, her dark eyes shining with tears. “You’re really staying?”
“I’m really staying,” Jonah said.
Iris threw her arms around him, burying her face in his chest. Her body shook with sobs. Jonah hesitated, then wrapped his arms around her and rubbed her back. “Hey, it’s okay.”
“I’m just so happy,” Iris whispered against his shirt. She didn’t let go.
Tessa hugged him next, her arms tight around his neck, her body pressed flush against his. She kissed his cheek, then his jaw, then—before Jonah could react—his mouth. It was brief, barely a second, but her lips were soft and warm and lingered just long enough to feel intentional.
Jonah pulled back, his face burning. “Tessa—”
“Sorry,” Tessa said, grinning. She didn’t look sorry at all. “I’m just excited.”
Mara laughed, pulling Tessa into a hug. “They’re allowed to be excited, Jonah. You’re part of the family now.”
Iris still hadn’t released his hand. Her fingers were laced through his, her grip firm and possessive. Jonah tried to pull away gently, but she held on tighter.
“Iris,” Jonah said quietly. “You okay?”
“I don’t want you to leave,” Iris said, looking up at him with those wide, unblinking eyes.
“I’m not going anywhere,” Jonah said.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
Iris smiled, slow and satisfied, and finally let go.
Mara opened a bottle of champagne, and they toasted in the living room. Tessa and Iris sat on either side of Jonah on the couch, their bodies pressed against his, their hands resting on his arms, his shoulders, his thighs. Every time he shifted, one of them moved closer.
“When’s the wedding?” Tessa asked, her fingers trailing up Jonah’s forearm.
“We haven’t talked about that yet,” Mara said, smiling at Jonah over the rim of her glass.
