Jonah drove through the night.
He left Whitefish at two in the morning, the motel room abandoned with the door still open. He didn’t pack. He didn’t plan. He just drove.
The mark burned steady beneath his shirt, a compass pointing him home.
Home.
The word felt wrong. Cedar Brook wasn’t home. It was a trap. But his body didn’t care. His hands gripped the wheel, his foot pressed the accelerator, and the miles disappeared behind him.
He stopped once for gas outside Missoula. The attendant looked at him twice—pale, sweating, eyes bloodshot—but didn’t say anything. Jonah paid cash and left.
The sun rose somewhere over the Idaho border. He didn’t notice.
By the time he reached the far side of the mountains, the mark had stopped burning. It pulsed instead, slow and rhythmic, like a second heartbeat. Each pulse sent warmth spreading through his chest, down his arms, into his groin.
He was hard. Had been for hours.
Jonah pulled into Cedar Brook just after sunset. The streets were quiet, familiar. He drove past his own house without stopping. The windows were dark. The lawn needed mowing.
He turned onto Mara’s street.
Every light in the Bellamy house was on.
Cars lined both sides of the road—sedans, SUVs, a black Mercedes he recognized from the first gathering. Jonah parked at the end of the block and sat in the truck, staring at the house.
He could still leave. Turn around. Drive until the truck ran out of gas.
But he didn’t move.
The mark pulsed again, stronger this time. Heat flooded his body. His cock throbbed, aching against his jeans. He closed his eyes and saw Mara’s face, her lips parted, her eyes dark and commanding.
Come inside.
The words formed in his mind, clear as spoken language.
Jonah opened his eyes. His hand was already on the door handle.
He climbed out of the truck and walked toward the house.
The front door opened before he reached it.
Mara stood in the doorway, backlit by warm golden light. She wore a long white robe, loosely tied at the waist. Her hair fell loose around her shoulders.
“You came back,” she said softly.
Jonah stopped at the bottom of the porch steps. “I didn’t have a choice.”
“You always have a choice.” Mara descended the steps and stopped in front of him. She reached up and touched his face, her palm warm against his cheek. “You chose to come home.”
“This isn’t my home.”
“Yes, it is.” She leaned in and kissed him, slow and deep. Her tongue slid against his, and the mark flared hot beneath his shirt. Jonah’s hands moved on their own, gripping her waist, pulling her closer.
When she pulled back, her eyes were darker. Wider.
“They’re waiting for you,” she whispered.
Jonah followed her inside.
The ritual room was exactly as he remembered.
Candles lined the walls, their flames casting flickering shadows across the stone floor. The circle was drawn in white chalk, the symbols precise and deliberate. Thirty people stood around the perimeter, all wearing white robes, all watching him.
Gideon and Ruth stood near the altar. Tessa and Iris stood on either side of the circle’s entrance, their robes open at the front, their bodies bare beneath.
Jonah’s pulse hammered in his throat. His cock strained against his jeans, hard and aching.
Mara led him to the center of the circle and turned to face him. She untied her robe and let it fall. Her body was perfect—full breasts, soft curves, skin glowing in the candlelight.
“Take off your clothes,” she said.
Jonah’s hands moved before his mind could catch up. He pulled off his jacket, his shirt, his boots. His jeans hit the floor. He stood naked in the center of the circle, his cock jutting out, thick and hard.
The gathered covenant members began to chant. Low. Rhythmic. The same words he’d heard before, though he still didn’t understand them.
Mara stepped closer and placed her hand over the mark on his chest. Heat radiated from her palm, sinking into his skin, spreading through his body like liquid fire.
“Do you feel it?” she asked.
Jonah nodded. He couldn’t speak.
“The bond is almost complete. All you have to do is accept it. Say the words. Speak the vow.”
“No.” The word came out hoarse, barely audible.
Mara smiled. “You will.”
She kissed him again, her hand sliding down his chest, over his stomach, wrapping around his cock. She stroked him slowly, her grip firm and confident. Jonah groaned into her mouth, his hips jerking forward.
The chanting grew louder.
Mara pulled back and looked into his eyes. “Lie down.”
Jonah’s legs buckled. He sank to his knees, then onto his back. The stone floor was cold against his skin, but the mark burned hot, pulsing in time with the chanting.
Mara straddled him, her thighs warm against his hips. She reached down and guided his cock to her entrance, then sank onto him in one slow, deliberate motion.
Jonah’s vision blurred. Heat exploded through his body. He tried to speak, to resist, but his mouth wouldn’t form words.
