Jonah drove until dawn broke over the mountains. He’d crossed into a remote stretch of Montana wilderness, miles from the nearest town. The highway stretched empty ahead. The landscape was nothing but pine forest and jagged peaks.

He pulled off at a rest area and parked. His hands shook on the wheel. He hadn’t slept in thirty-six hours. The mark on his chest burned constantly now—a low, steady heat that never faded.

He got out and walked to the restroom. Inside, he splashed cold water on his face and stared at himself in the mirror. His eyes were hollow. His skin was pale. He looked like a man who’d been running for his life.

Because he had.

He lifted his shirt and examined the mark. The black lines now covered his entire chest, wrapping around his ribs and creeping up toward his collarbone. The symbol at the center—the three-line triangle—pulsed faintly, like a heartbeat.

Jonah pressed his hand against it. Heat seeped into his palm. He closed his eyes and forced himself to breathe slowly. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. The Army taught him controlled breathing. It helped. The mark’s heat faded slightly.

Grounding worked. Barely.

He returned to the truck and pulled out the notebook. He wrote: Day 8. Remote Montana. Mark covering full chest. Breathing exercises provided temporary relief. Isolation and exhaustion amplified effect. Need to keep moving.

He got back in the truck and drove.

By midday, Jonah reached a town called Whitefish. It was small, quiet, and far enough off the main highway that he felt relatively safe. He found a motel on the edge of town—a single-story building with a gravel parking lot and a flickering neon sign that read Vacancy.

He parked at the far end of the lot, away from the office. He grabbed his duffel bag and walked to the front desk. An older man with a gray beard watched him through the window. He didn’t smile.

“One night,” Jonah said. “Cash.”

The man took his money without asking for ID. He handed Jonah a key attached to a plastic tag with the number 12 stamped on it. “Checkout’s at eleven.”

Jonah nodded and walked to his room. The door stuck when he pushed it open. Inside, it smelled like mildew and old carpet. A single bed. A small bathroom. A window with thin curtains.

He locked the door and set the chain. The chair wedged under the handle wouldn’t budge. He pulled the curtains shut, checked the window lock twice, then sat on the bed. Finally, he breathed.

The mark on his chest pulsed.

Jonah lay down fully clothed, his hand resting on the grip of his pistol. He didn’t want to sleep. But exhaustion dragged him under.

Jonah woke to fire.

The mark on his chest flared white-hot, stealing his breath. He jerked upright in the motel bed, gasping, hand pressed against the burning skin. The black lines glowed faintly in the dark room, pulsing with his racing heartbeat.

Three sharp knocks at the door.

Jonah froze. His heart hammered. He didn’t hear a car pull up. Didn’t hear footsteps on the gravel outside.

He reached under the pillow for his pistol. The metal felt cold and solid in his hand. He swung his legs off the bed and moved to the window, keeping low. The curtains were thin and cheap. He pulled one edge aside and peered out.

The parking lot was empty. His truck sat alone under the single flickering streetlight. No other vehicles. No movement.

The knock came again. Soft. Deliberate.

Jonah crossed to the door and looked through the peephole. His breath caught.

Mara stood on the wooden porch, hands folded in front of her. She wore a long wool coat, dark and elegant, her hair pulled back. But something was off. The coat was torn at the shoulder. Her face was pale, almost translucent in the dim light. Tessa stood to her left in a fitted jacket and jeans, expression calm but strained. Iris stood to her right in a heavy sweater, eyes dark and watchful.

They looked like they’d just stepped out of a magazine. But frost clung to their hair. And their breath didn’t fog in the cold air.

Jonah stepped back from the door. He raised the pistol and aimed it at the center of the wood. His hands were steady. Training kicked in. Assess the threat. Control the angles. Don’t fire unless you have to.

But his chest was on fire. The mark burned so hot he could barely think.

“Jonah.” Mara’s voice was soft and intimate, like she was standing right beside him. “Open the door.”

He didn’t move. Didn’t speak.

“We know you’re awake,” Tessa said. Her voice was light, but there was an edge to it. “We felt it when you woke up.”

Jonah’s stomach dropped. He looked down at the mark. The black lines pulsed steadily, spreading heat through his ribs and into his lungs.

“You can’t hide from us,” Mara said. “The private mark connects us. We didn’t follow your truck, Jonah. We followed the mark. The road was only for you.”

Jonah watched through the peephole as Mara stepped closer. She didn’t touch the door. Didn’t knock again. She just stood there, eyes fixed on the peephole like she could see straight through to him.

Then the deadbolt turned.

Jonah stared as the brass lock rotated—slowly, smoothly, like invisible fingers were working it from inside. The latch clicked. The chain slid free. The door swung open.

Cold air flooded the room. Mara stepped inside first, her coat brushing the doorframe. Tessa and Iris followed, closing the door behind them. The three women stood in the cramped motel room, calm and unhurried, as if they’d been invited.

But Jonah saw it now—the frost clinging to their shoulders, the torn fabric, the way Iris swayed like she was fighting to stay upright. Whatever brought them here cost something.

Jonah kept the pistol raised, finger resting on the trigger. “Stay back.”

Mara smiled. She unbuttoned her coat and let it fall open, revealing a simple black dress that clung to her body. She glanced at the gun, then met his eyes. “You’re not going to shoot me.”

“Don’t test me.”

“I’m not testing you.” She stepped forward. “I’m telling you the truth.”

Jonah’s hand tightened on the grip. He wanted to pull the trigger, wanted to stop her, but the mark on his chest flared hotter. The pain spread through his ribs like molten metal. His breath came in short, ragged gasps. His vision blurred.

Mara walked straight toward him. Didn’t flinch. Didn’t hesitate. She reached out and placed her bare palm directly over the mark.

The pain vanished.

Jonah gasped as the burning heat disappeared instantly, replaced by a wave of intense, paralyzing pleasure. It flooded through his chest, his stomach, his groin. His knees buckled. The pistol slipped from his hand and clattered to the floor. His body shook with relief so powerful it felt like drowning.

Mara knelt beside him, stroking his hair with a light, tender touch. “There,” she whispered. “That’s better.”

Jonah tried to push her away, but his arms wouldn’t move. His muscles were locked. His breath came in short, ragged gasps. The pleasure was so intense he couldn’t think, couldn’t fight it. His cock hardened against his jeans, throbbing and aching. He hated himself for it—hated that his body responded without his permission.
