He attempted to mirror her response. “That’s great, Dad,” he managed, the smile feeling carved into his face, artificial and stiff. “I’m happy for you both.” And some fragment of him meant it recognized his father’s happiness as genuine, deserved. But beneath this acknowledgment lurked something darker, a hollow ache that spread through his chest like cold water. The private connection he had cultivated with Olivia, the workouts and conversations and moments of proximity that felt like his alone these treasures seemed suddenly devalued, exposed to light that revealed their limitations. She had never been his secret. She had been becoming his father’s.
