POV: Paul
Paul was living a dream he thought only existed in movies. After a long, grueling day at the factory, he would come home to the smell of a real dinner cooking, to a house that was clean and bright, and to a woman who looked at him with a hunger that made him feel like the most desired man on earth. Olivia. If he wanted, and he always wanted, she would take him in her mouth and make him forget the stress of the day, the weight of his responsibilities, the quiet ache of loneliness that had been his constant companion for so long. She did the cooking, the cleaning, and took care of the kids with an efficiency that was almost supernatural. It was a perfect life, the one he had always craved but never thought he could have.
But sometimes, in the quiet moments, a cold hand would grip his heart. It happened when he was alone in his study, a glass of whiskey warming his palm, the amber liquid a poor substitute for the warmth he felt with Olivia. His eyes would drift to the photograph of Margaret on the bookshelf. Her smile was frozen in time, a reminder of a life that was gone, a love that was supposed to be eternal. A voice, his own but also hers, would whisper in his mind. What are you doing, Paul? Is this what you promised me? That you’d let some some stranger into our bed? Into our children’s lives? The guilt was a physical thing, a knot in his stomach, a sour taste that even the finest whiskey couldn’t wash away. This new woman, this perfect, beautiful woman, felt like a betrayal, a desecration of the sacred memory of his wife.
He tried to fight it. He would sit in his study, staring at Margaret’s picture, and tell himself it was wrong. He would pour another drink, the ice clinking in the glass like a warning bell. This has to stop, he’d think. For Margaret. For the kids. I have to end this. But then the door would open, and Olivia would be there, and all his resolve would crumble into dust.
Her presence was a drug, a potent, addictive substance he couldn’t resist. He knew he should say no, knew he should push her away, but the moment she entered his proximity, he was lost. The scent of her perfume, a mix of vanilla and something darker, would wrap around him, clouding his judgment. The sight of her smile, the way her eyes would light up when she saw him, would make his heart pound in his chest. Once he had tasted her, her smell on his skin, her kisses on his lips, the wet heat of her mouth on him, he knew he couldn’t do without anymore. It was a need, a craving that overrode every promise he had ever made to himself or to Margaret.
One evening, he was in his study, trying to muster the strength to end it. He was musing behind his desk, the glass of whiskey untouched in his hand. He was staring at Margaret’s picture, her face a silent accusation. I have to tell her it’s over, he thought, his hand trembling slightly. I have to be the man Margaret thought I was.
Then the door opened, and Olivia slipped in, closing it softly behind her. She didn’t say a word. She just glided across the room, a predator moving in for the kill, and sat on his lap, her weight a familiar, welcome pressure. She leaned in and kissed his neck, her lips soft and warm, her tongue tracing a path that sent shivers down his spine.
“Thinking too hard again, Paul?” she whispered, her voice a low, husky murmur that was both a question and a command.
He could only groan, his head falling back against the leather chair. Margaret, he thought, a desperate, silent plea. Forgive me.
