POV: Philip
Seven days dissolved into memory, and the trial period that hung uncertain now demanded decision. The house breathed differently. Cooking scents lingered in rooms that had smelled of nothing. Voices filled spaces that had held only silence. Philip, fifteen, watched the transformation with the wary curiosity of a boy who understood that nothing given came without cost. Lily, thirteen, had surrendered her caution days ago.
Paul gathered them in the living room. He settled into an armchair facing the couch, his posture relaxed in a way that suggested confidence and something else-hope, perhaps, or the careful optimism of a man who had learned not to expect too much. The floor-to-ceiling windows behind him showed the manicured garden, the pool, a backdrop too perfect for what they were.
“The week is over,” Paul said. His voice carried weight. “I need to know what you both think. About Olivia staying.”
Lily didn’t let him finish. She launched from the couch, her small frame colliding with his chest, arms wrapping his neck with ferocious certainty. “Yes, Daddy, yes!” The words burst from her, bright and uncomplicated. “The house is clean and she makes real food and she talks to me about my drawings and she listens, she actually listens-”
She released him mid-sentence, momentum carrying her toward Olivia, who received her with open arms. The embrace was fierce, Lily’s face buried against Olivia’s shoulder.
Paul’s gaze traveled to his son. Philip felt the weight of that attention, the expectation in the silence. He shrugged, a gesture designed to suggest indifference, though indifference had become impossible days ago. At fifteen, he was old enough to recognize manipulation, young enough to be affected by it anyway. The food improved his days. The cleanliness mattered less than he admitted. But Olivia herself-the way she moved through rooms, the way she looked at him sometimes, the way his blood responded to her proximity-that complexity defied simple assessment.
“It’s fine,” he managed, the words rough, inadequate. “She’s ... fine.”
Olivia’s eyes found his across the room, over Lily’s honey-blonde head. She disentangled herself with deliberate grace and crossed the space between them. When she embraced him, Philip understood immediately that this was different from Lily’s enthusiastic collision. This was calculated intimacy, warm and soft and precisely measured.
Her body pressed against his, and he catalogued each sensation with the terrible awareness of adolescence. The softness of her breasts against his chest-ripe, full, unmistakable through the thin fabric separating them. The warmth radiating from her skin, the scent of vanilla and something darker, muskier, that filled his lungs and made his head swim. His body responded with embarrassing predictability, heat flooding his groin, his breath catching as her lips brushed his cheek in a kiss that lingered half a second too long to be innocent.
“Thank you, Philip,” she whispered, the vibration of her voice traveling through his bones.
“Settled then,” Paul said, his voice carrying a tremor that suggested he had witnessed more than he acknowledged. He rose, his smile broad but his eyes careful. “Olivia? Don’t I receive similar gratitude?”
Her laughter was throaty, practiced. “Of course.”
