POV: Philip

Olivia’s eyes had been on him all week—not in the way they usually were, sharp and assessing, but with a kind of soft, deliberate focus. At dinner, her gaze would drift across the table and settle on him, and he could feel it like a physical touch: warm, lingering, almost maternal. She was watching the new quiet in his shoulders, the way his hands sometimes stilled halfway to his mouth. She saw the coiled tension in his forearms when he reached for the salt, the slight hesitation before he spoke. It wasn’t the swagger he’d brought back; it was something quieter, something uncertain. And she seemed to know—before he did—that what he needed wasn’t more words. It was motion. It was purpose. It was the weight of the tiller in his palm and the sting of salt spray on his face, the sound of the sail snapping taut above them and everyone on board looking to him to bring them home.

“Let’s take the boat out tomorrow,” she said, setting down her wine glass with a decisive click. “There’s that little island with the beach. We could pack a lunch, make a proper day of it.” She paused, her smile warm and inviting. “There’s a small beach there, isn’t there? Perfect for a picnic.”

Lily’s fork froze halfway to her mouth, her eyes widening. “Yeah,” she said, the word tumbling out before she’d fully swallowed. She grinned at Philip, practically vibrating in her seat. “Good idea. Really good idea.”

The idea of a family day at the beach was met with a surprising amount of enthusiasm, a rare and welcome occurrence in their newly complicated dynamic. It was Olivia’s suggestion, of course, a masterstroke of normalcy that was anything but. “We should all go to the beach on the island tomorrow,” she’d announced at dinner, her voice bright and breezy, as if she were suggesting a trip to the grocery store. “Just the four of us. Sun, sand, surf. It’ll be perfect.”

Lilly’s eyes had lit up, a genuine, unforced sparkle. “Can June come?” she’d asked, her voice full of hope. “Please?”

The question hung in the air, a test of the new, fluid boundaries they were all navigating. Paul had looked at Olivia, a silent question in his eyes. Olivia, ever the pragmatist, had simply smiled. “Of course, sweetie,” she’d said. “The more the merrier. We’ll just need to call her dad and get it all squared away.”

The call to June’s father was a study in careful diplomacy. Olivia handled it, her voice a soothing, reasonable melody that could charm the bark off a dog. She didn’t mention the unspoken complexities of their household, the shifting alliances and forbidden attractions. Instead, she framed it as a simple, wholesome day trip. June’s father, a man whose rigid faith was matched only by his rigid control over his daughters’ lives, was not an easy sell. The idea of June being in the care of this particular family, even for a day, was clearly unsettling to him. He agreed, but only on one condition: that June’s older sister, Emily, come along as a chaperone.

And so, on a bright, searing Saturday, the Jackson family loaded the sailing boat not with beach towels and coolers, but with a thick, unspoken charge. The air hummed with it. Philip moved coolers and bags, his muscles working on autopilot, but his entire focus was a laser. He was tracking Emily. Every shift of her weight on the dock, the way the sun caught the fine hairs on her arm as she handed a bag to her sister, the precise, almost reluctant set of her mouth. He watched, his blood a low, heavy drumbeat in his ears.

He knew Emily, of course. They were the same age, fourteen, but they moved in different orbits at school. She was in a different class, a different social circle. She was quiet, intense, with a serious, bookish demeanor that was a stark contrast to her younger sister’s bubbly, effervescent personality. She had the same striking features as June—the same wide, dark eyes, the same full lips—but they were arranged on a face that was more solemn, more guarded. She wore her dark hair in a simple, no-nonsense ponytail, and her glasses were perpetually perched on the end of her nose. Where June was a whirlwind of chaotic energy, Emily was a still pool of deep, unreadable water. Philip found himself ... intrigued. There was a gravity to her, a quiet intelligence that seemed to see more than she let on.

The trip to the island was a noisy, chaotic affair. Lilly and June, reunited and giddy, chattered nonstop on the foredeck, their conversation a high-pitched, excited stream of gossip and plans. Philip was at the rudder.

And then there was Emily. She sat beside them, a book open on her lap. She didn’t try to make conversation. She didn’t fidget or glance around. She just ... read. Or pretended to. Philip had a strange, unshakable feeling that she was observing everything, cataloging every glance, every touch, every undercurrent of tension that rippled through the car’s confined space. He found himself acutely aware of her, of the scent of old books and something else, something clean and sharp like mint, that clung to her. He found himself wanting her to look at him, to say something, anything, just to break the strange, charged silence that existed between them.
