POV: Paul

Morning pressed against the camper’s curtains in thick golden bars, heavy enough to wake him. Paul opened his eyes to the weight of Olivia’s hip against his own, her breathing shallow and warm against his neck. The mattress creaked when he shifted, the sound loud in the small space. He dressed in silence, pulling on shorts and a shirt that smelled of lake water and wood smoke.

Outside, the air carried frost and pine. They unfolded metal chairs in a patch of sunlight that had burned through the tree canopy, the aluminum cold against Paul’s palms even through his clothes. Olivia poured coffee from a thermos, the liquid steaming in the cool morning air. Paul wrapped his hands around the cup and felt the heat penetrate his skin.

The sound started low, rhythmic, a wooden protest from the direction of the Becker camper. Paul set his cup down. The creaking accelerated, matched by breath that built from whisper to moan to something guttural and sharp. Jane’s voice cut through the morning quiet without shame, carrying across the empty space between campsites. Paul turned his head. Olivia’s eyes met his, her mouth twitching at one corner.

Half an hour later, the sounds returned. Higher this time, frantic-Abby’s voice catching on each exhale, breaking against Terry’s lower register until both voices peaked and fell away, leaving only the echo in Paul’s chest.

The camper door swung open. Three figures emerged, stretching naked in the morning sun as if clothing had never existed. Jane walked first, water still beaded on her shoulders from whatever washing they’d done inside, her hips rolling with a languor that made Paul’s throat tighten. Terry followed, laughing at something Abby whispered, his hand casual on her waist. They moved down to the lake in a single unselfconscious mass, splashing into the cold water without gasping, the sound of their play carrying back to where Paul sat with his cooling coffee.

Jane climbed out first, water streaming down her thighs, and walked directly toward them. Paul watched her approach, tracking the drops that caught light on her skin. She stopped at the edge of their chairs, her body still shedding lake water onto the packed dirt.

“Morning,” she said. Her voice carried the particular roughness of recent use. “How was your night?”

Paul’s own voice came out scraped, sleep still lodged in his throat. “Good.” He swallowed. “And yours?”

“Refreshing.” The wink pulled at her cheek, deliberate and knowing.

They settled into the empty chairs, bodies fitting into metal and nylon without retrieving clothes. Jane’s thigh pressed against the armrest, her hip angled toward Paul. “We prefer nude when camping,” she said, as if commenting on weather. “More natural.”

Breakfast passed in the scrape of forks against plates, the pour of orange juice. Abby’s chair scraped back. She turned to Terry with her body pitched forward, eagerness visible in her shoulders, her hands clasped together.

“Dad, will you go kayaking with me?”

Terry stretched, his spine popping audibly. “Too tired this morning, sweetie.” His grin suggested the source of that tiredness. “Why don’t you ask Mr. Jackson?”

Abby’s head turned. Her eyes found Paul, and something in the way the morning light caught them-honey-brown and direct-made his stomach clench. He looked at Olivia. Her hand found his knee, fingers pressing through the fabric of his shorts.

“Go on,” she breathed, close enough that her words warmed his ear. “Have some fun.”

“Okay.” The word came out hoarse. He cleared his throat. “Where do you want to go?”

“There’s an island,” Abby said, already bouncing on her heels. “Sandy beach. But you have to-” she paused, her teeth catching her lower lip, “-take off your clothes. Nude kayaking’s more fun.”

Terry helped them drag the kayak to the water’s edge, his hands leaving wet prints on the fiberglass hull. Abby climbed in first, settling herself in the stern with a towel folded beneath her. She passed Paul a bag of food, her fingers brushing his as she transferred the weight.

Jane intercepted him as he prepared to push off. She leaned close, her breath carrying coffee and something sweeter. “You have to know,” she murmured, the words barely shaping themselves against his ear. “She’s on the pill.”

Paul’s hands spasmed on the paddle. He stared at Jane, at the calm certainty in her face, and felt the ground tilt beneath his feet.

The kayak slid into water cold enough to numb his fingers. Paul paddled in steady strokes, watching the shoreline recede, the campsite shrinking to a toy version of itself. Abby’s voice came from behind him, chattering about music she liked, about cheerleading practice, about a boyfriend who played football with serious eyes and clumsy hands. Her words filled the space between paddle strokes, rhythmic and constant.

Half a mile from shore, the paddle hung suspended above the water. Droplets fell in slow arcs, each one catching light before reuniting with the lake. The kayak rocked beneath him, unstable, responding to the shift of his weight. He turned to look at Abby. Her face was flushed from exertion and sun, expectant, her mouth slightly open as she waited for him to speak.

“I can’t.”

The kayak tilted harder. He gripped the gunwales, his knuckles whitening against the dark fiberglass, staring at the water rather than meeting her gaze. “Abby, I ... your parents.” The words came rough, scraped from his throat. “They can’t seriously ... they gave you permission? To ask me?”

“Of course they did.” Her hand touched his forearm, cool against his sun-warmed skin, steadying the boat’s rocking. “They trust me. They trust you.” Her fingers tightened, pressure against his pulse point. “Mr. Jackson, look at me.”

He couldn’t. He kept his eyes on the distant shore, on the water, on the paddle floating useless in his lap. “I’m thirty-six years old.” His voice cracked. “You’re seventeen. Your father trusts me.” He shook his head, trying to dislodge the thought, but it circled back. “What kind of man am I? What kind of father lets his daughter-”

“-make her own choices?” Abby finished. She shifted, and the kayak tilted toward her, forcing his gaze or capsizing. Her eyes held his-clear, steady, older than seventeen. “I’m not a child, Mr. Jackson. I know what I want.” She leaned closer, her breath warm and coffee-sweet against his face. “The question is whether you know what you want. Or if you’re just afraid.”

Paul stared at her. The challenge in her gaze, the steadiness of her hand on his arm, the way she filled the space between them without retreat. He felt something in his chest crack, a fissure opening along a fault line he hadn’t known existed.

The kayak slid onto the sand with a soft scrape. Abby hopped out into the shallow water, her bare feet sinking into the silty bottom. She pulled the bow further up the beach while Paul unloaded the bag of food and the single blue towel. He spread it on a patch of fine white sand, its surface already warm from the sun. The towel was just large enough for two people to lie side-by-side, if they didn’t mind touching.

He lay back on the towel. The sand was warm against his shoulder blades, coarse enough to scratch through the fabric. He didn’t reach for her. He didn’t turn away.

Abby stood above him, her feet planted on either side of his hips, her shadow falling across his chest and stomach. She looked down at his cock, standing thick and rigid against his stomach, the head dark and swollen, a bead of fluid already gathering at the slit. Her eyes widened, a flicker of apprehension that made her seem suddenly younger than seventeen.

She lowered herself until the tip of his cock touched her smooth, hairless lips. She parted them with her fingers, revealing slick pink folds, the inner labia glistening with arousal, her entrance a tight puckered hole pulsing with her heartbeat, her clitoris visible as a small hard pearl.

The first moment of penetration wrenched a gasp from his throat-not pleasure, but shock, the sensation too intense, too immediate. And suddenly he wasn’t on the island at all.

He was in his kitchen years ago, watching Lily at the table, her hair still wet from swimming practice, laughing at something on her phone. She looked up at him with clear, trusting eyes-the same shape as Margaret’s, the same color as his-and smiled in that way she had, like he was the safest thing in her world.

Daddy.

The word echoed, wrong and terrible, and Paul’s stomach lurched. He was going to be sick, here, now, with this girl lowering herself onto him and his daughter’s face superimposed over hers like double exposure. He squeezed his eyes shut but the image wouldn’t fade. Lily’s smile. Abby’s parted lips. The trust in both.

His hands found the towel beneath them, gripping until his knuckles ached, white against the blue fabric. Breathe, he told himself. Breathe. This isn’t Lily. This is Abby.
