POV: Paul

The knock on the camper door was a sound like surrender, pulling Paul from a deep, contented sleep. Beside him, Olivia stirred, muttering something into the pillow. “I’ll get it,” she whispered, her voice husky with sleep and satisfaction. She slipped out of bed, grabbed his dress shirt from the floor, and pulled it on, the fabric hanging past her thighs. She opened the door.

A girl stood outside, maybe sixteen or seventeen, blonde hair in a messy braid and wearing a faded tee and shorts. “Hi, sorry!” she chirped, eyes bright. “I’m Abby. My mom sent me to see if you had any coffee to spare. We totally forgot.”

Olivia smiled, all warmth and easy confidence. “Of course, sweetie. One sec.” She filled a battered metal pot from their own supply and handed it over, her bare thighs visible beneath the hem of Paul’s shirt. “Bring it back whenever.” Abby grinned a gap-toothed grin in thanks and scurried off.

Paul watched from the rumpled bed, amused at the spectacle of his new wife running their little slice of camping life. He felt the dregs of sleep and last night’s wine in his head but mostly he felt good. Unburdened.

A few minutes later, Abby returned, holding the empty pot. “Thanks again. Um, my mom says you should come over for breakfast. If you want. She’s making pancakes.”

Olivia glanced at Paul. “You up for it?”

He didn’t really want to intrude on strangers’ family time, but the invitation was offered with such open, hopeful sincerity that it felt rude to refuse. “Sure,” he said. “Sounds great.”

They pulled on some clothes and followed Abby to the neighboring camper. It was smaller, more cramped. Inside, they met the Beckers. Jane, the mom, was petite with kind, tired eyes and something quietly mischievous in her smile. Her husband, Terry, was thirty-five, with a lean, athletic build and a friendly, easygoing grin. And then there was Abby, at seventeen, who was already setting out plates, her movements fluid and confident. Her body was caught in that liminal space between girl and woman, and Paul felt a sudden, uncomfortable awareness of his own middle-aged flesh.

“We’re the Beckers,” Jane said, shaking their hands with a grip that was firm and warm. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“Paul and Olivia Jackson,” Paul replied, the words feeling new in his mouth. “We’re, uh, newly weds,” he added, a goofy, proud grin spreading across his face.

The Beckers’ smiles widened. “Well, that explains all the ... noise ... last night,” Terry said with a wink. Paul felt a flush creep up his neck, the heat of embarrassment mixed with something else pride, perhaps. He couldn’t help but laugh. As they talked, Paul noticed the small size of the camper. There was only one bed, a modest double, tucked into the corner. He wondered, with a flicker of curiosity, how the three of them managed.

“We were planning on hiking to the waterfall today,” Olivia said, changing the subject.

“Us too!” Abby exclaimed, her face lighting up. “You should come with us! We can go all together.”

The invitation was too warm to refuse. An hour later, the five of them were trekking along a well-marked trail. The two-hour hike was filled with easy conversation and laughter. They didn’t pass another soul, the isolation feeling both liberating and charged.

When they arrived at the waterfall, Paul was floored. It was breathtaking, a cascade of crystal-clear water tumbling down dark, moss-covered rocks into a serene, turquoise pool.

“Oh, wow,” Olivia breathed.

The pool was an invitation too tempting to resist. “I wish we had our swimsuits,” Paul lamented.
