POV: Paul
The day before the wedding, Rachel arrived like a weather system, a front of confident, chaotic energy that instantly electrified the house’s atmosphere. It was Paul’s first encounter with her physical presence, and the reality exceeded imagination. She moved with a feline, deliberate grace, each step a practiced rhythm that spoke of years spent under observation, comfortable with being watched. Her hair fell in soft chestnut waves to her shoulders, catching the afternoon light in coppery flashes as she turned to take in the foyer. Her face was heart-shaped, high cheekbones and a delicate jawline framing large hazel eyes that shifted between green and gold as she assessed him, thick dark lashes lowering slightly as her full lips parted in a smile that looked like she was about to share a secret. She wore a backless dress in a deep jewel tone that draped against her slender, curvaceous frame, revealing the pale, luminous skin of her spine and the thin vertical line of ink that ran from the base of her neck down toward her tailbone-a dark divider that drew the eye along her form. Her left arm, sleeved in black-and-grey florals and vines from shoulder to wrist, moved in expressive gestures as she spoke, a detailed bird near her shoulder seeming almost alive. When she crossed the floor toward him, there was a subtle sway to her hips that created an almost hypnotic effect, and Paul found himself staring at the iridescent blues and greens of the stylized wing that swept across her left collarbone, a living artwork against skin that seemed to glow.
“Mr. Jackson,” she purred, taking his hand in the grand entrance hall, her touch lingering a moment too long for a casual greeting. “It’s a pleasure. My sister has made a ... very good catch.”
Paul felt a flush creep up his neck, blood rising to the surface like a tide. He was a man in his thirties, a successful businessman accustomed to command, but this twenty-one-year-old girl made him feel like a nervous teenager, exposed and evaluated. “Thank you, Rachel. It’s good to finally meet you.”
The wedding unfolded in a small, simple chapel, the stained-glass windows casting colorful patterns on the polished wooden pews like a benediction made visible. It was just the five of them, an intimate circle completed by the presence. The air was thick with a quiet, profound joy, an emotion so concentrated it seemed to have weight, texture. Rachel, stunning in a simple silver dress that caught the light like liquid mercury, took Olivia’s arm and led her down the short aisle with ceremonial gravity. Lily, beaming in a pale yellow dress that made her look both younger and older than her thirteen years, walked proudly as the bride’s maid, her posture straight with the importance of her role. Paul stood at the front, his heart a frantic, chaotic drum in his chest, his eyes locked only on Olivia, the world narrowing to her approach.
As Rachel gave her sister’s hand to his, she leaned in, her breath warm against his ear. “You take care of her, you hear? She deserves the world.”
“I will,” Paul said, his voice so thick with emotion the words were barely audible.
The ceremony was short, sweet, as efficient as their love had become. When pronounced husband and wife, Paul didn’t hesitate. He pulled Olivia into his arms and kissed her, a deep, possessive kiss that was a promise of a lifetime, a claim staked in public, a declaration that said you’re mine now, forever, without reservation or exit.
Afterward, they gathered at a small, exclusive restaurant, the conversation flowing easy, the laughter genuine and unforced. Rachel entertained them with stories from her “wild” life in the San Fernando Valley, her voice a low, throaty purr that captivated them all, including Philip, who watched her with adolescent fascination he couldn’t quite disguise.
Later that evening, Paul and Olivia stood before their honeymoon-on-wheels: Paul’s camper, a sleek, modern beast of a machine that was their wedding bed made mobile. It was a marvel of luxury, a top-of-the-line Airstream with an automatic extension that created a spacious living area, a fully equipped gourmet kitchen, and a plush queen-sized bed with memory foam mattress and high-thread-count linens. It was more luxurious than some apartments he’d seen. “Are you ready for this, Mrs. Jackson?” Paul asked, his voice a low rumble of happiness.
Olivia giggled, a sound he knew he would never tire of hearing. “I am, Mr. Jackson. More than ready.”
They drove into the night, the city lights fading in the rearview mirror, replaced by the deep, velvet darkness of the countryside. They drove for hours, the highway giving way to smaller roads, then finally to a dirt track that wound deep into a vast nature reserve. They arrived late, the camper’s headlights cutting across a scene of profound solitude. The campsite was not a park at all, but just a small, open field nestled against the shore of a gorgeous, moonlit lake. There were no facilities, no marked spots, no hook-ups. Just a small sandy beach at the edge of the water and the silent, watching forest.
In the center of the field sat one other camper, a smaller, older model, its windows dark. The people inside were already asleep. Paul parked a respectful distance away, the only sounds the crunch of tires on dirt and the gentle lapping of water against the shore. The isolation was absolute, a world away from the life they had just left.
As the moon began to set, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of orange, pink, and gold, Paul pulled Olivia into his arms. “I have a question for you, Mrs. Jackson,” he murmured, his lips brushing against her ear, his breath warm against her skin. “Are you ready to finally try out our wedding bed?”
Olivia giggled, a low, throaty sound that traveled through him like a current. “I would be delighted to, Mr. Jackson.”
He scooped her up, her arms wrapping around his neck, and carried her into the back of the camper. The space was expansive, not cramped at all. The memory foam mattress welcomed them, sinking slightly under their combined weight. In the soft, dim light of the designer lamps, her skin looked like warm honey, golden and glowing, and he couldn’t stop himself from touching really touching tracing the line of her jaw, the pulse fluttering in her throat, the way her chest rose and fell with each shallow breath.
“God, you’re beautiful,” he said, his voice rough and wrecked by her proximity.
“Paul,” she whispered, her hands coming up to cover his. “I’ve waited so long for this. For us.”
He started to undress her, but slowly reverently wasn’t the word, not quite. It was hungrier than that, more desperate. Each button he freed from her blouse revealed another inch of skin he wanted to taste, to claim, to memorize. When the fabric finally parted, he didn’t just look; he leaned in and pressed his mouth to the hollow of her throat, felt her swallow against his lips, heard the catch in her breath as he dragged his mouth lower, across her collarbone, down to the lace edge of her bra.
“Your mouth ... it feels like fire,” she breathed, her head falling back.
