Romance Sex Story: Chapter 6 - This is an old-fashioned romance echoing a song your granny will know. It is a homage to Homer and the Sagas who first told the tales we recycle. Shakespeare used their ideas and so did Star Trek!

Embracing Change
Our menage de nuef continued for another year during which we made remarkable commercial progress. It was our success in this field that brought the house of cards crashing down eighteen months after our foundation. The pin that burst our bubble was the cruise – it almost deserves a capital letter. Three months before the luxury liner left the quayside in Greenock, Jenn reported her unaudited accounts of our first year. We were all present and someone suggested we celebrate together.
We agreed to close down for two weeks and to holiday together. This idea had a mixed reception until someone suggested that we go on a cruise with Engineering Innovations paying for it. Suites would be booked for Henry and Jenn, Peter and Amanda, Alice and Phil together with George and his current secretary. It was suggested by Jenn that Emily and I could share a suite. Emily poured scorn on that but suggested that we tag along occupying single cabins.
Alice added finding a suitable cruise to her list of duties and I went back to work and would have given the holiday no further thought if it hadn’t been for the undercurrent of excited speculation permeating the very air we breathed. Destination and duration were the two main topics on which I had my own thoughts, although I only voiced them when asked.
We all accepted that the bonus must be realistic which introduced a surprisingly bitter argument: five days in the Med or round the Baltic for free against ten or more days to a more exotic destination using our own money to make up the difference. After several more heated discussions, I was not alone in concluding that we would do better to get as far from each other as possible during the two weeks off. My thoughts were coloured by Emily’s behaviour.
She has been cool towards me since she joined us and, at first, I took her agreement to join in the cruise was a sign that she was ready to forgive me. She had, instead, increased the virulence of her criticism of me allowing others to witness her animosity. “What have you done to upset that lovely girl,” Phil asked, typically taking the point of view that the man was to blame. Even Pete, about as socially inept as I am, remarked on our ‘falling-out’, as he put it.
The first actual break in our united front came, predictably, from Sir George. It began when his current secretary joined a long line of earlier incumbents on the scrap heap. What was different this time, was that instead of appointing another blonde with a bust larger than her IQ, he set his sights on Alice. She had enjoyed the novelty of a lesbian liaison, but she succumbed to the lure of big bucks. “You know I’ve always enjoyed the company of older men,” she explained, waving her hand towards Henry and me. Then she giggled: “And it doesn’t lessen his attraction that he’s mega-rich.”
Philomena moved in with Frances and Anne where she was as welcome in the bedroom as for her contribution to their finances. No one was particularly bothered by that development; all it meant was booking one less suite. Jenn did use the opportunity to raise again the question of destination and duration. George, perhaps planning his eighth or ninth honeymoon, backed her. They bullied the others into sailing on a twenty-one-day cruise from Scotland across the Atlantic to the Caribbean.
That was the final straw for me, so I withdrew from the party. I could just about tolerate being locked up in a tin box with Emily for five days, but three weeks was beyond my endurance. Perhaps deprived of her prey, she withdrew two days later. Nine had been reduced to the three pairs and that remained the status quo until the week before the ship left. I was excluded from the increasingly excited discussions about the epic voyage until the Monday of the week they were due to sail.
On that day I heard two rather different versions of the cause of the problem, although they were agreed that the outcome was disastrous. Amanda and I arrived at the same moment in the car park where she informed me with some heat that I would be pleased that the cruise had foundered. The first cruise in history that was shipwrecked before it set sail. Alice had ruined everything by blatantly seducing Peter on Saturday evening.
Jenn later gave me a more coherent account of the doings at the County Ball which she and Henry attended with Sir George, Alice, Amanda and Peter. George no longer dances much and was happy for Alice to be danced off her feet by other, fitter partners. Amanda enjoys dancing but hadn’t even heard of some of the dances which left Pete as Alice’s chief partner. Things came to a head, as is often the case, during the eightsome reel where Pete literally swept Alice off her feet.
Amanda accused Alice of seducing her boyfriend, almost, she claimed, having sex with him on the dancefloor. George sided with his daughter and the pair left in the limousine that had been hired to take all four home. Henry offered Pete and Alice a lift back to town where Alice had prudently retained her own apartment. She offered Pete a bed for the night.
Hopes of a reconciliation were dashed when Peter and Alice arrived hand in hand on Monday morning. He confided in me that he had been considering leaving Amanda because of her demanding, jealous nature while Alice confided in Jenn (who couldn’t wait to tell me) that George could not manage penetrative sex and hadn’t a clue about oral.
By this stage, Sir George had fully paid for three luxury suites on a liner due to leave Greenock at nine o’clock on Saturday morning. He now had only one couple, Henry and Jenn, to fill them. He decided to take a suite on his own and Amanda claimed the third cabin, also solo. On Thursday, there was a change of plan when George managed to sell one suite (at a discount) to an old business acquaintance. George and Amanda would share his suite. Ironically, that was the day when the bonus was paid into their bank accounts.
The news was all round the office by lunchtime on Thursday which had one unexpected outcome: Emily came into my office and carefully closed the door behind her. She had been cool towards me since the company opened but in the three months since the cruise was proposed, she has only spoken to me on work matters, and sparingly at that. Now she had plenty to say - much of it critical of me.
She pointed out that the moment of agreeing to the cruise was the highpoint of our company ethos. We were a workforce who enjoyed our jobs so much that we wanted to spend our vacations together. “You were against it from the start Alan Stuart and you’ve been a blight ever since. At every step you have blighted the idea. We admire your intelligence but once again your lack of social skills has harmed everyone around you.”
I admired Emily more at that moment than ever before. There was enough truth in her complaint to make it sting and I guessed that she was only saying to my face what the others were saying behind my back. Against her argument all I could offer was a bleat like an old sheep stuck on her back until the shepherd came along and righted her. “Our strength as a company lies in our diversity. Because we are individuals, we each bring something into the mix which has been outstandingly successful. Holidaying together is a step too far – we don’t want clones.”
Emily then totally astonished me by bursting into tears. “I know that really, Alan, but this time things have become very serious indeed. Amber and her father are sharing a suite, and you know what that old goat is like with young women. His own daughter is the right age and shape.” I had to admit that incest could not be ruled out as an objective of Sir George’s, but I was sure Amanda could look after herself.
I tried to explain this to Emily, but she wasn’t convinced. He is certainly a man with a powerful personality. I finally, reluctantly played my ace: “I thought Alice would have told you the real reason she left.” Emily didn’t reply but the sudden blush that suffused her cheeks was answer enough. She laughed, a little shakily, and asked what I proposed to do. I told her that I was going to the party on Friday night to celebrate our successful year and a half in business and to wish the four of them bon voyage. “I hope you’re going to help me get the others talking about their holiday plans.” We parted on better terms than we had been for three months.
I did take to heart her appreciation of the relationships we had established in the business. My answer was to put some of my bonus behind the bar to treat my colleagues. I discovered that both Jenn and George had the same idea. In addition to the eight people who began the journey, we invited Phil with Frances and Anne. Emily told the company that she was travelling to Callander in the morning so she and her mum could lose themselves in the Highlands for a week.
That got the others started. Phil was taking her landladies to meet her folks which led to some teasing about a marriage being next on her agenda. Which of the inseparable pals would she choose? Pete and Alice had chosen a more conventional route: they have booked an adult resort in Croatia. The intrepid sailors were in good form, Jenn suggesting that being confined in a cabin with Henry for two weeks might lead to divorce. I noticed that Jenn seemed to adopt the same flirtatious approach to both Emily and me.
Henry was the only one who seemed to be a bit subdued. I assumed that he was concerned at what his father would do to Paterson’s while he was on the high seas, but he claimed that all was well and he was really, really looking forward to the trip. Jenn was the life and soul of the party until about ten o’clock when she suddenly disappeared. Henry was still there, looking happier as the alcohol took effect but there was no sign of his wife.
We searched the pub and car park, finally concluding that she had gone home. She had said nothing to anyone and offered no explanation to Emily who phoned her at home to confirm her safe arrival. Jenn’s absence took the heart out of the party, so we drifted away with wishes for a great holiday all round. Despite being sad at the way the evening ended, I was pleased to get away from the gang for two weeks. Engineering Innovations was my baby, my concept and I was as relieved as I was surprised that we succeeded.
Having said that, it would be an enormous relief to be responsible for no one but myself for two whole weeks. I had been spending most of my time at the flat in town but now I intended to devote myself to my cabin. I would descend from my fastness to buy what I could not shoot with my gun or land with my trusty fishing rod. Realistically, the butcher and fishmonger had very little to worry about.
I made such an early start that I had the chains on my first spruce when the cruise was schedule to depart at ten o’clock on Saturday morning. The Forestry Commission permitted me to collect timber felled by winds during the winter. My mini tractor hauled the tree to the cabin where I used chain saw and axe to build up a store of winter fuel for my stove. I had located several fallen trees at Easter, so I wasted no time hunting for my next timber. I stopped briefly to make soup and a sandwich for lunch. It was after seven when hunger and exhaustion combined to drive me indoors.
I had promised myself that I would cook proper meals during the holiday, but reality intervened and I popped a ready meal into the microwave oven. Even a couple of glasses of a decent Macon couldn’t disguise the fact that it was an unsatisfactory meal. It did enough, however, to take the edge off my appetite and allow me to retire after a hot, relaxing shower.
Although I was tired, there was a sense of accomplishment that kept me awake while I patted my back. I was drifting towards sleep, thinking that I was a hell of a man, when I heard a noise. There are deer in the forest, and the word probably hasn’t got around the herd that there is a human living in the cabin. I was settling once more to sleep when there was the unmistakeable sound of the door opening and someone entering the house. Deer do not open doors although they might enter the open cabin if they smelled food.
My situation was particularly vulnerable; not only was I naked but I was lying prone under a duvet which would restrict my movements if I was attacked. All I could do was throw off the cover and stand upright. I was still standing there looking around for something that could be used as a weapon, when the bedroom door opened and I was faced with Jenn or some simulacrum of my friend.
My first thought was that the ship had foundered and that this was her ghost returned to haunt me for withdrawing from the cruise leaving her to drown. That view was reinforced when I noticed that she was wearing a light summer dress such as you might choose for an evening aboard a luxury liner. Further evidence of her new status was the fact that she hadn’t uttered a word, an impossibility for the woman I knew.
