The full custody hearing lasted forty minutes.
Patricia Henley presented the home study, the continued documentation of maternal absence, a school report showing Mikaela’s grades had risen half a letter across every subject since the placement. She submitted a written statement from Mikaela per California Family Code §3042 — three pages in Mikaela’s own handwriting that the judge read in full without expression.
Termination of the mother’s parental rights was granted on the grounds of abandonment. The finding took four minutes of deliberation.
Full legal guardianship transferred to Kenzo Yakamura effective immediately, with adoption proceedings to commence at the thirty day mark.

The thirty days passed the way significant waiting periods always do — quickly in retrospect, interminably in the living of them. Mikaela counted without meaning to. Woke each morning with the number already in her head, recalibrating without effort. Twenty-two days. Seventeen. Nine.
She didn’t speak of it. The household knew without being told, the way households absorb the rhythms of the people inside them. Mioki said nothing and kept her close and let the time move at its own pace, which was the right thing to do and Mikaela knew it even when the waiting pulled at her.
Mei Ling found her in the garden on the fourteenth day, which had become their place — the low stone bench, the morning tea, the particular ease of two people who have learned each other’s silences. She sat without being asked and they were quiet together for a while.
“Fourteen more,” Mikaela said finally.
Mei Ling nodded. She didn’t offer reassurance or comfort, which was one of the things Mikaela had come to appreciate about her. She just acknowledged the fact and sat with it alongside her.
“What if something goes wrong?” Mikaela asked. Not really believing it. Needing to say it anyway.
Mei Ling looked at her with those steady dark eyes. “Nothing will go wrong,” she said. “She decided. When she decides something it stays decided.”
Mikaela looked at the garden. At the titanium collar at her own throat, smooth and certain. At the heart shaped tag she’d put back on that morning the way she put it on every morning, the small ritual of it already as natural as breathing.
Property of Mioki Yakamura.
“I know,” she said. “I just needed to hear it.”
Mei Ling reached over and touched the back of her hand, brief and light. Sister.

The night before the hearing she couldn’t sleep.
She lay in the room that had been hers for two months now — her desk, her closet, her window facing the garden — and stared at the ceiling and tried to imagine what it would feel like when it was done. She couldn’t quite get there. Some things resist imagination until they’re real.
