“I did nothing to you.”
“Yes you did. When you touched me I felt a shock. Why did you do it?”
I leaned down and helped her up and she winced.
I hurt my leg when I fell. And since you are responsible for it, you are going to have to help me home.”
She leaned on me all the way to her place. Her place wasn’t far and we were there in five minutes. She opened the door and invited me in. I knew she was going to barrage me with questions now she was safe in her lair, but I went in anyway. I had a lot money in this pot and I wasn’t going to fold at the first storm cloud in the sky.
I was right. She did try to put me to the question. But I fended her off by asking for a coffee. She said she was a tea drinker and I said fine. While she was making the tea, I had time to organize my thoughts. If I was right and she was a spirit battery, I would need to come clean with her. She would be the first person I would tell about my magical journey. I hadn’t even told the twins yet. I was feeling very nervous as she put the tea in front of me. While I was drinking my tea she went to have a shower and get cleaned up.
When she came back to me I took a good look at her. She was a tall black woman with wavy black hair down past her shoulders. I’m not an expert on these matters but I guessed that she was 6”2, 38 DDD cup. She wasn’t fat by any stretch of the imagination, she was just big. I was very impressed by her.
“So, what did you do to me?”
“By the way, I’m Alex Johnson.”
“I’m Rochelle Allen. What did you do to me?”
“I’ll tell you but you won’t believe me.”
“Tell me your story, anyway. I promise not to laugh until after you finish.”
“OK. Here goes the short version of the story.”
“I’m a Novice Elemental Magician and you are someone who could help me.”
“You’re right. I don’ believe you, but carry on anyway.”
I thought for a second. How could I demonstrate my claim. I was only a brand new novice after all. So I did the only thing I could think of.
“I’ll give you a small demonstration.”
I pulled my sleeves above my elbows and showed her my arms. Then turned my hand palm up. I made a ball of light appear. Medes had said that a lot of magic was simply intention and will. All I did was fill my hand with spirit mana and will it to glow just like I had with Medes. I took a chance on my ability to control the mana and handed it to her. She took it and examined it from every direction, but couldn’t figure out how I did it. She tried to hand it back to me but I just waved my hand and the ball of light disappeared.
“OK. I choose to believe you, for now. You said that I could help you. How?”
“I think the best way to answer your question is to tell you my story from the start until now.”
So I told her my story, from the accident, to meeting Medes, to opening my spirit gate, to meeting the earth elemental, right up to now. She sat there digesting it all, then she spoke.
“That’s a very interesting story, but it doesn’t answer my question. Why do you need me?”
“I told you about the earth elemental. Gaining access to the power of the Earth Realm creates a problem for me, and you could be the answer, if you chose to be. If I want to use that power, I have to divide my soul into five separate areas. One section for each of the five elements. If you agree to my proposal, I would be able to store my earth element energy in you.”
“You know. I see two possibilities here. The first is that you are a raving lunatic. The second is that I am a raving lunatic. And I don’t know which one I prefer.”
“But do go on. It’s a very entertaining story. Tell me why I should care? Why should I become your spirit carrier? What’s in it for me?”
That’s a good question.”, I said. “And here’s the answer. The magic has made me smarter, stronger, faster, healthier, able to withstand pressure much, much better, I’ve even been told that I’ll have a much, much longer lifespan.”
“I guess what I’m saying is that since the magic, I have become better in every way. And I don’t mean just a little. What I’m offering you is the chance to be better too. I’m offering you the chance to achieve all these things too. You won’t achieve as much as me, but you’ll still be much better than you are now.”
“Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention. You also get a considerably longer lifespan and you get to keep your current youthful beauty.”
“Why are you only offering me a secondary position? Am I only fit to carry your energy for you? Why can’t I become a magician too?”
“I’m sorry. There are certain thing that have to happen before you can become a magician. And those things haven’t happened to you. If they had, you would already be a magician too.”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t tell you any more than that. I have to keep certain things secret.”
She sat still, thinking things over. I knew that my only recourse was to wait silently too. Finally she broke her silence.
“You know. I don’t want to believe you, but there’s this great big voice inside me telling me that I should believe you. That I should accept your offer. But tell me this? What happens if I refuse your offer?”
Nothing. I just get up and walk out of your life and you will never see me again.”
“And if I accept your offer? What happens then?”
“If you accept my offer, you and I would perform a small ritual to join your soul with the Earth Realm so that you can fill your soul with its energy. Then I would join your soul to mine so I can get access to that energy. Sorry again, but unless you except my offer I don’t feel I should answer your question any deeper than that.”
‘You’ve told me about the upside of being and Earth carrier. What’s the downside?”
“The downside is that you will have to spend a lot of time cultivating your soul. It isn’t like the movies where the magician just wiggles their nose and things happen. Magic, at any level, requires a lot of time, effort and energy to master. This will also increase the other benefits I mentioned. The stronger your soul becomes the greater the benefits you receive will be. Which makes it like anything else. If you want to be good at something you have got to put in the effort.”
She went silent again. And I copied her again.
“You know. That big voice inside me is just too loud. I’m going to accept your offer.”
“Now what do we do?”
“You don’t want to go walking in the rain again, so I’ll go home and prepare the ritual I told you about and tomorrow night we do the ritual.”
I got home and told Medes about my luck. This was one of the few times that I had impressed him.
“That was a stroke of luck. Tell me the story?”, he asked and I obliged.
