It was Saturday night, my night to go out. The trouble was that I didn’t want to go anywhere special. I wasn’t in the mood to go to a bar or restaurant. In the end I decided to go to the mall to see if I could find a woman there who would be interested in taking me back to her place.
I would do what I usually did. I would let the woman present herself to me. When I found one I liked I would make my move. I walked around the mall pretending to look at the store windows and casually look around to see who was paying attention to me. I did this for awhile when I noticed I was being followed. When I moved position she would always turn up a few seconds later and pretend to be looking in a shop window glancing over at me every now and then. I looked her over. She was a redhead, about 5” 8 tall and slender. In my inexperienced opinion she was probably a 36C cup. I liked what I saw, and junior agreed, so I had my target. Since she was obviously presenting herself to me, I had no problem approaching her.
“Hi. “I’m Alex Johnson. How are you?” I said offering her my hand.
She took it and mumbled blushing, “I’m Peggy Fleming. Nice to meet you.”
“Are you enjoying the evening?”
“Not really.”, She sighed.
“I was bored at home so I decided to walk to the mall.”
So she lived close by. Things were looking up.
“We can’t have that.”, I said, boldly tucking her arm inside mine.
“You’re so bad.”, she said giggling.
“Yes I am, aren’t I?”, I said looking into her emerald green eyes
We walked around the mall chatting together. We weren’t really going anywhere. We we just enjoying each other’s company. After about half an hour she gave out a big yawn. She started apologizing but I told her to forget it. This was the moment I had been waiting for. It gave me the perfect cover to make my move. I asked her if I could walk her home and she coyly agreed.
When we got to her front door she invited me in for a cup of coffee, to which I agreed. When we had finished the coffee, she took the cups to the kitchen. I followed her, and as she started washing them I wrapped my arms around her from behind. She turned in my arms and we kissed. We took our time and explored each others bodies. We only did it once, but it was long, slow and extremely satisfying experience. I got home at midnight, took a shower and went to bed.
When I get home from work the next day, I told Medes that I was ready to take the next step in my journey.
“The next step is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. You have to give up control.”
“And what do I have to give up control of?”, I said, thinking I already knew the answer.
“Why give up control of you body, of course.”, he said nonchalantly.
Medes could be an asshole sometimes, and this was one of those times. He was going to make me drag it out of him.
“And why would I want to do that?”
“Because you have to.”
“And who would I be giving control of my body to?”.
“Why, your soul, of course.”
“You need to learn to give control of your body to your soul. Up until now all the tasks I have given you were to nurture your soul to make it healthy and strong. This is the transition period. From now on all your tasks will be exercises for your soul. Your soul needs to learn to act on it’s own. It needs to gain confidence in itself and its abilities.”
“That makes sense.”
Medes was right. Giving up control was the hardest thing I’d had to do since I’d made the decision to walk the path. I’d join with my soul, and try to pass control of myself over to it. Every time I felt my control slipping out of my grasp, I’d unconsciously grab it back again. It took me two months to be able to give up my control to my soul.
But that was just the beginning. Whenever my soul had control of ourself, my ‘me’ would turn into a quivering mass of unreasonable fear and break the connection. But I kept on trying and eventually, after another three months of trying, I was able to give over control without any qualms or fear at all. I was able to take the back seat and let my soul do the driving. I even had him doing my job for me. It strengthened the bond between us considerably.
This was a very important marker in our relationship. I had learned to trust my soul. From this moment on we would always work together.
“Ok, Medes. I have learned to trust my soul. What’s the next item on the menu?”.
“Good. I’m glad you recognize the purpose of the exercise.”
“Now, let’s talk about mana. Mana particles come in varying degrees of quality. It’s like the difference between fast food and a healthy well balanced diet. So your soul needs to refine its mana. Your soul has to learn how to differentiate the different qualities of mana. It should only have the highest quality particles in its mana pool.”
As always with Medes’ tasks, it was easier said than done. I sat down in my chair and passed control over to my soul. He shifted our awareness to his mana pool and we began to examine the particles.
Looking at the mana particles up close and personal, it was easy to see the difference in the quality of the particles. Some were dull and moved around the pool slowly, but others shone with more light and moved around the pool more quickly. We began the culling. Since this was a job for my soul, I withdrew from my inner world and left him to it. He would take care of the inner world, and I would take care of the outer world.
Who said you can’t do two things at once.
It was a very slow task. He would have to examine every particle and decide whether to keep it or drop it. I would pop in on him every now and then, and watch him work. But this was a job only he could do, and I left him to it. He seemed to enjoy the experience though.
I suppose that, to him, it was like the difference between eating a hot dog and eating a sirloin steak would be to me. It took my soul two months to separate out the lesser particles and another three months to fill up with the higher quality particles and complete the task. And, as always, after completing one of Medes’ tasks, I experienced a rise in my own well being. I now only needed four hours sleep a night.
