I quickly broke the connection. A voice in a crystal was way, way, way above my pay grade. I would need Medes’ help on this one. I went home to talk to Medes, my shopping forgotten. When I got home I called the girls and told them to come over, there was something we needed to talk about. When they arrived I asked them to sit down and listen to my story.
“Something weird just happened. I was walking to the paint shop to get some paint for the basement. It was a nice day so I wanted to sit in the park for a few minutes to enjoy it. Then I started to feel like I was being watched. I used my magical vision to try to locate the source of the feeling.”
“It was a crystal buried beneath a statue. I started examining the crystal and found that there was some kind of spell there, but focused inwards. So I took a chance and tried to look inside the crystal when suddenly a woman’s voice spoke to me. I got such a shock that I withdrew from the crystal. Then I came here to tell you about it.”
“Why didn’t you talk to her?”, asked Tina, with all the other ladies murmuring agreement.
“Woman’s voices coming out of crystals buried beneath statues is way, way, way above my abilities. Who knows. Maybe I would have gotten trapped in there with her.”
“I agree. He’s still a novice, no matter how far he has progressed. I’m glad you came to me instead of trying to play the hero. That’s a sure way to die.”, said Medes.
“So settle down, ladies. We will go and see what’s up. If we can rescue her, we will.”, Medes told the girls.
That seemed to calm the girls down. I picked up Medes and started for the door. The girls decided that they were going to and followed me out. We all got in my car and went back to the park
When we got to the park I showed Medes where the voice had come from. He examined the barrier I had mentioned and pronounced it safe.
“This is only a barrier meant to keep the woman inside the crystal. There’s no trap that I can see.”, Medes said.
“Go ahead and talk to her. Try to find out why she was trapped in there.”
So I went into the crystal again.
“Hello. Are you there?” I said.
“Yes. I’m here. Why did you go away?”
“I had to get advise on trying to free you.? And now I’m back. I’m Alex Johnson. What’s your name?’
“I’m Hannah Moody. And I’m very glad that you are going to try to get me out.”
“Can I ask you why you are in here?”
“I’m in here because I once refused a man’s advances and he took offense. I didn’t know that he was a magician until he locked me in here.”
“How long have you been trapped in there?”
“I’m not sure. What year is it?”
I told her and she gasped.
“I’ve been locked in here for over one hundred years.”, she said and burst into tears.
“All of my family and friends are dead. Everyone I knew is dead.”
“What will I do now.?”
“We’ll start by getting you out of there. I’m going to have to go back to the world now. But I will try my very best to free you.”
“OK, but please be quick. Every second I spend in this prison is an eternity.”
I withdrew my awareness and Medes followed me. The girls immediately noticed my return to the world.
“You were gone a long time.”, said Ember
“I was so worried about you, Sir”, Su said.
“How is the woman?”, Tina wanted to know.
Rochelle didn’t say anything because she knew I wasn’t listening.
I sent my awareness back in with Medes following me and found the gem. I covered it in my awareness. I examined it carefully. I found the crystals essence, and summoned it into my hand.
“Time to go home girls. When I got home I rushed to the basement. I hadn’t let Medes go since I went back to the park and I kept hold of him, now. I forbid the girls going into the basement because of the potential danger. What I was about to attempt could go wrong and produce a backlash, and I wasn’t going to risk them.
I set the gem on the altar and sat on the floor talking to Medes. Medes told me that I had fallen into the luck pool and come out smelling like roses. He told me that any elemental magician would give nearly anything they had for a ghost like Hannah because Hannah wasn’t a wandering spirit, she was a full soul. Which means that she was filled with spirit mana not ordinary mana.
Whatever the mad magician had done to her, he hadn’t wanted to destroy her. He suggested I ask Hannah to join the group as a Spirit Battery. And since she was already a spirit training her would be much simpler than with the other women.
I told Medes that although what he said was all very interesting, I would think about it later. Right now, I was more interested in getting Hannah out of the crystal.
I asked him to tell me how to break the barrier and free the woman inside the gem. He coached me through the necessary steps a few times until I felt confident to do it. I took Medes back upstairs and returned to the basement.
I cleaned the circle and filled it with Spirit Mana, wrapped the gem in my awareness, and spoke the spell Medes had given me. There was a blinding flash of light and the gem burst into a million pieces. And then there was quiet. Slowly a translucent shape took form before me.
“Oh, thank you.” Hannah said when she had finished materializing.
“Thank you so much. How can I ever repay you.”
“You don’t owe my anything. I didn’t free you for reward. I freed you because it was the right thing to do.”
“I am appalled by what that other magician had done to you. I felt the need to do what I could to redress, in some very small part, the horrible injustice done to you. I hope you don’t think all magicians are like that.”
“I don’t think you are like that. I’ll have to wait and see with other magicians”
“What are you going to do now?”
Her face fell at that.
“I don’t know what I am going to do now. I have no family. I have no friends. I have no knowledge of this time. And I’m a ghost. I have no idea what to do.”
“I may have some ideas on that, but that is for later. Right now I offer you the sanctuary of my home until you figure out what you want to do.”
“Thank you. I am in desperate need of help in adapting myself to a whole new world.”
“Come up stairs and meet the family.”
We went upstairs and I made introductions and we all sat down to chat. I made sure to big up Medes as the hero of the day. And it was true. Without Medes, Hannah would still be trapped in the gem under the statue.
“Why don’t you tell us your story Hannah?” I asked.
