I can’t tell you how pleased I was to get out of the hospital. It’s not that I had any complaints with the hospital or staff. It’s just that lying in bed for four days can be a little trying. Who knew that resting could take such a toll on you.
Since I was checking out today, and hospital food being as bland as it was, I decided to skip breakfast. I would go to my favorite restaurant for an early lunch. When I got there I sat in my usual place. Since I was a regular, and I tipped well, the waitress smiled at me as she approached my table.
“Hi, Alex.”, she said pulling out her order pad. “Where have you been? We haven’t seen you for a couple of weeks. What are you in the mood for today?”
Since we weren’t really friends, and I wasn’t interested in getting any false sympathy, I made up a cover story to explain my absence.
“I’ve been out of town. They screwed up big time over in Melville and I had to go over and clean up the mess. I’ve only just got back.”
“And I’m in the mood for a nice big steak with all the trimmings, thanks Emily.” I replied with some eagerness.
It had been too long since I had eaten any decent food and I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity now.”
“What do you have in the way of pie?”
“We’ve got apple pie, pecan pie and cheesecake on the menu today. Which one do you fancy?”
“I think I’ll have the pecan pie today, thanks. And follow that up with a big mug of coffee.”
I sat there savoring my meal, The restaurant wasn’t busy this early in the day so the girls would chat with me as they puttered around doing this and that. When I finished my meal I paid my check and left. I stopped of at the grocery store after that. I’d been away from home for nearly two weeks so I wasn’t sure about the state of my fridge. I bought a few staples just to tide me over. Then I headed home.
When I got home I rang up my boss. He politely inquired about my health and we made small talk for a couple of minutes and I told him what the Doctor had said about resting for a month. He grumbled a bit about me having a month off. I could see his point so I offered him a way out of the problem. Since I was only a couple of months away from my annual vacation, I told him to think of my recuperation as me having an early vacation. I could hear the relief in his voice as he agreed to my idea. This was a plan he could sell to his boss. We ended the conversation on a happy note. I knew I still had a job.
Then it was time to rest. Doctor Harmon had proved prophetic. All I had done today was check out of the hospital, had some lunch, pushed my luck a little by getting a taxi home, and I was exhausted. I went to the living room and sat in one of the lounge chairs. I was asleep in a minute.
I woke up with the feeling that someone was watching me. I looked around the room but couldn’t see anyone. The feeling persisted and it was bugging me, so I had a look around all the rooms in the house. Still nothing, but the feeling kept getting stronger.
I just put the feeling down to affects from the accident. I decided to watch some TV. Maybe that would distract me. It didn’t, and the feeling was getting stronger. There was nothing else for it. I would give the house a good searching. Maybe if I showed myself how paranoid I was being, the feeling would go away. I walked around the house pulling out drawers and opening cabinets. Nothing. I finally homed in on the feeling. It was definitely coming from the living room. It was coming from my bookshelf. Which was very strange as there was nothing but books there.
One thing you should know about me is that I like to read. It doesn’t matter what it is, I’ll read it. I have even been known to read advertising pamphlets when there is nothing else. Because I like to read I have a large bookshelf covering one wall of my living room. I noticed that the strange feeling was strongest when I was standing near the bookshelf. So I went searching. I studied the spines of all the books in the bookshelf. I soon found a book I didn’t recognize. It had black leather binding and on the spine was the word, “ARCHIMEDES”, written in white down the spine. I pulled the book out and it spoke to me.
“It’s about time. I’ve been bored to tears waiting for you to find me”
I was so surprised that I almost dropped the book. I fumbled with it for a couple of seconds, but I managed to save it.
“Hey! Be careful. You almost dropped me on the floor.”
“What sort of joke is this? And whose playing it? If someone has broken into my house, there will be hell to pay!”
“Nobody is playing a trick on you. Nobody has broken into your house. It’s me, the book. You can call me Medes, short for Archimedes.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. Books can’t talk.”
“I can.”
I opened up the book and flipped through the pages thinking there must be some sort of communication device inside it. But there were only ordinary pages covered in some sort of weird script.
“What do you want? If you want me to play this silly game, I want to know what you want and what it will cost me.”
“I’m here to give you a gift and it will cost you very little.”
“Really. And what would that, ‘gift”, be?”
“The gift of magic”
“Don’t be preposterous!”, I said almost shouting.
“There’s no such thing as magic. Why would I believe such a cock and bull story?”, I said, getting myself back under control.
“Well, to start with, there’s me. Have you ever had a conversation with a book before?”
“No, I haven’t, not in the literal sense anyway. But I don’t believe I’m talking to a book. This is some sort of trick.”
“OK. Try to put me back in the bookshelf.”
I tried to do what he said, not believing his story, and I failed. So I took a firm grip on the book and tried to put it back in the bookshelf, and failed again. Then I summoned up all my strength, and failed for a third time. I’ve got to admit that losing a contest of strength to a book is humiliating.
“Are you convinced now?”
“Not at all. But I’ll play along for the moment. So I’ll ask you again. What do you want? And what will it cost me?”
“I have already told you. I’m here to teach you magic. And the cost is nothing more than that paid by any professional athlete or musician. The cost is to dedicate your life to the study of magic.”
“What happens if I decline your offer?”
“Then I disappear and you miss out on a life of power and adventure. Your soul falls asleep again and you go back to your ordinary, humdrum, boring life.”
“But before we go on, I’d like to ask you a question. Have you been in any accident, or had any traumatic experiences recently?”
“Yeah.”, I said hesitantly, and paused...
I wasn’t sure I wanted to tell him, a perfect stranger that I didn’t trust at all, anything about myself. But in the end I couldn’t see any harm in it.
“I just got home from eleven days in the hospital. I was in a car accident and received some head injuries.”, I answered.
“That’s why I’m here then. Trauma is one of the most common ways to wake up your soul and then you get a book like me making the same offer I’m making you. There are other ways of wakng up your soul, but trauma is the most common”
