Chapter 17

Now that Medes could pull off the illusion of being real, I started taking him with me when I went out. If I went to see the girls or if I went grocery shopping I would take him with me. So it was not surprising when he asked me to take him to the video store to get a couple of DVDs to watch. He loved fantasy movies in general, but he particularly loved High Fantasy. He enjoyed them the way I enjoyed Science Fiction movies. They had a good story, but the science in them was mostly nonsense. We made our choices and went home.

While we were watching the fantasy movie a magician enchanted an amulet that would protect the hero from the antagonist’s magical fire. I though that was a great idea.

When the movie was finished, I turned to Medes and said, “You know, Medes I think it’s time to try my hand at Enchanting. I would like to make something to protect the girls and myself.”

So we sat around having one of our long discussions. He told me that I would probably be wanting to load the object with more than one effect. I would need to hold that many effects in my mind at the same time.

I could also enchant different things in the same object, like a ring with a gem in it, putting one enchantment in the ring and another in the gem. He suggested I do it this way until I had more experience. I told him that I didn’t see that as a problem as I only had two batteries online a the moment.

He also told me that I would need Divination here too. I would have to examine the object I was intending to enchant, and find it’s essence. That’s where I would have to place the intended effects.

It was similar to charging and discharging of the circles that I had done so many times already. He told me that although anything could be enchanted, different objects held the charge better than others. He said that Silver and iron held enchantments the best, and of the two, silver was preferred because it didn’t just hold the enchantment but enhanced it. Other metals would hold the charge but in a weakened form. Liquids were the worst things because the enchantment got broken up with the flowing nature of liquids.

He told me that continuously charging and discharging materials other than silver and iron degraded the object and turned them to ash over time. So with this in mind I went to the stores that sold cheap jewelery to teenage girls and bought a lot of it. I didn’t care if they degraded and turned to ash. I just wanted to become as proficient with enchanting as I was with the other schools of magic.

As usual with non elemental forms of magic, I sat on the sofa to do my training. I thought about which enchantment I should use. I thought back to the day I cast my first effect. I just brought out some of my mana and returned it to my mana pool.

That’s where I would start. I would bring out my mana and transfer it to the object I wanted to enchant. Then I would return it to my mana pool. I wanted to see if I could, with practice, increase the amount of mana I could put into the object

I reached into my box of cheap jewelry and pulled out a ring. I set the ring on the table, I found its essence. I spent the afternoon filling the essence with mana and and reclaiming it. The amount of mana I could fill thye chosen object did slowly increase.

Then I got serious, it was time to actually enchant something I decided to use the spirit shield spell I had gotten from Medes on the day I cast my first spell. I was pretty sure I would be using it in any enchanted jewelry I made for my ladies.

I did this for about an hour when I noticed something interesting. For the first time ever when starting a new school of magic I didn’t get a headache.
