The next idea I came up with to bring Medes more fully into the group was to see if he could play cards. Since he could use both the TV and the computer from his home on my coffee table, I wanted to see if he would also be able to play cards. I shuffled the deck and put it on the table face down.
“Hey Medes. What’s the top card?”
He was silent for a few moments and said, “The eight of diamonds. Why did you ask me that?”
“I’ll tell you soon. What’s the next card?”
“Ten of clubs.”
“And the next?”
“Three of hearts. Why? What’s going on here?”
“You got them all right I want to teach you how to play cards.”
I wanted to teach him a game where the rules were easy to understand but was also challenging to play. I taught him how to play Gin. By the end of the week he was beating me seven games to three, and by the end of the month he was beating me ten games to two. I should have picked another game. So I did. I taught him how to play cribbage. I held my own here, at least for awhile. Then it was on to poker. Surprisingly, I did much better here. I generally lose when I play poker but with Medes I was winning.
My magical studies were coming along, and I started thinking about finding my air battery. I had the usual long talks with Medes about air. And the ever present question popped up again. Where do you find an Air Battery. The only thing I could think of was to go out into the countryside to find one, but that wasn’t a very realistic idea. So I put the question aside and hoped my subconscious would figure it out.
To distract myself I decided to go out. But where? Then I remembered my two visits to the vet. I found the number Tina had given me and called her up. She gave me some well deserved shit about taking so long in getting back to her. I agreed with everything she said and she agreed to go out with me on Saturday night. I told her that I would pick her up at seven sharp and to be ready. I knocked on her door and she opened it. She had on a tiny, little blue cocktail dress that hid hardly anything. She looked like a walking wet dream.
I stood there looking her up and down for a few seconds and said.”You’ll do.”
“Is that all you’ve got to say. I’ve just spent the last two hours getting ready. I had a shower, and I shaved, ‘everywhere’. I’m not even wearing any underwear. And all you can say to me is, You’ll do.”
“Judging from that outfit, I’m guessing that you want to go drinking and dancing.”
“You’ve got that right. And don’t think you’ll get away with not complimenting me and my dress. You are going to pay for that, and pay through the nose.”
“Shall we go?”, I asked her
“Yes. But first I want to do this.”
She stepped forward, wrapped her arms around me, and tilted her head up to kiss me. and then it happened. We both felt the shock. It was the same as with Rochelle and Su. It was only a flash but it made itself known.
“What in the name of all that’s holy was that?”, Tina exclaimed.
“That.”, I said, rather enigmatically. “Was a bolt from the heavens.’
“You should change out of those clothes. We are not going out tonight. We are staying in. We need to have a long, long talk.”
“You’ve got that right, Buster.”, she said going back into the house.
I stood there thinking. Tina, a battery. Tina?
No, it’s not Tina I told myself. It’s Celestina. Celestina, meaning, “of the heavens”. You stupid fool I berated myself. She was sitting there, right under your nose the whole time, and you didn’t see her. You’d better start paying attention to what’s going on around you or you’ll end up in the wastelands with the wandering spirits. With that I followed Tina inside.
“Well? What happened out there? What was that shock thingy all about? You’d better answer me, Buddy, and answer me quick.”
“I guess the easiest way to answer is just to blurt it out. You see, I’m a magician. A wielder of magic. I may only be a novice magician, but I am a magician none the less.”
“Bullshit! There’s no such thing as magic. It only exists in story books. And if you are going to try to feed me bullshit lies like that, you can just get out of my house and fuck off right now.
I’m not lying. And I’ll try to prove it to you.”
I used the same light ball effect that I had used with Rochelle and Su. Tina just stood there, stony faced. Then I tried my earth cloak. I had got to where I was semi transparent. Sort of like a ghost. I still failed to impress her. I picked a glass up off the table and filled it with water and she remained unmoved. So I pulled out the BFG. I added a little showmanship into the mix, too. I held my hands out in front of me and acted as though I was pushing something down. She started feeling a weight pressing down on her. I increased the pressure slowly.
“OK. OK. I believe you.”
I had stopped the pressure the very second she started talking. My aim was to convince her, not hurt her.
“Sorry, but you’re hard to convince.”
“I was convinced by your first effort. I just wanted to see how far you’d go.”
“Now. What was that shock thing all about?”
“Perhaps it would be best if I told you my story from the beginning of my magic journey. That way we don’t have to keep jumping all over the place.”
So I told her the whole story from Meeting Medes to meeting the air elemental...
