I woke up in a dark room with my head buzzing with pain. Then someone burst into the room. The light from hallway increased the pain in my head tenfold.
“Shut that goddamned door!”, I croaked. “There are people dying in here.”
“Sorry.”, the person said and closed the door.
The person turned out to be a nurse. That explained where I was. Now I just had to find out why I was there.
“Lie still. I’ll get a doctor.”
“Ok, no problem.”, I croaked again, not moving a muscle.
Sh nodded and hurried of to wherever it was that she was going. Since I had nothing else to do, I lay there trying to work out how I ended up in hospital. I remembered that my car wouldn’t wouldn’t start so I had taken a taxi to work. My last memory was looking out the window of the taxi, seeing another car, And then, nothing.
Just then the doctor arrived with a different nurse in tow. My nurse, and a couple of others, were hanging out in the hallway peeking in the room and chattering quietly among themselves. That peaked my interest. I’d have to find out why.
The Doctor strolled over to the end of my bed, pulled my chart and studied it with an air of everything’s alright here. He didn’t fool me though. I knew that I was in deep do-do. Finally, he look up at me.
“Well Mr. Johnson. I am Dr. Harmon. I’m in charge of your case. How are you feeling?”
“Like I survived the apocalypse, My head hurts and my throat is dry. Any chance of getting some pain pills and some water?”
The doctor looked at the nurse, and she went off to get me some water.
I’d like to examine you if I may.”
“Sure thing, Doc. What happened? I’m a little hazy on things.”
“Yes. I suppose you would be. You were in a traffic accident. A drunk driver T-boned your taxi. You are a very lucky man.”
“You have suffered some head trauma. But from your x-rays we took when you came in, and from the vitals the nurses took, It appears that there is no permanent damage. I still want to check you over though, just to make sure.”
He then proceeded to do what doctors do when checking you. He took my pulse, listened to my chest, and spent a lot of time flashing a light into my eyes. That one hurt.
The nurse came back into the room while the doctor was examining me.
Finally he stepped back and said, “Well. Yes. You appear to be recovering. We’d like to keep you in the hospital for a few more days. Just to make sure.”
