# The Farmhouse
The farmhouse was about twenty minutes outside of town, down a road that wound through fields and past a couple of other properties. It was white with a wraparound porch, bigger than Marco expected, with a barn out back that looked like it hadn’t been used in years.
Ellie pulled up to the house and killed the engine.
“Home sweet home,” she said.
Marco looked at it. It was nice. Really nice. Nicer than anywhere he’d ever lived.
They went inside. The living room was big and open, with hardwood floors and comfortable furniture and pictures on the walls. Ellie and Frank in various places. On a beach. At what looked like a party. With other couples, looking flirty and comfortable.
In one of the photos, Frank was shirtless on the beach, and Marco’s eyes caught on it for a second longer than they should have. The broad chest, the dark hair, the way his abs cut down into his swim trunks. In another picture Ellie was wearing a very revealing sundress that barely covered her big beautiful breasts. Same beach he supposed. Marco looked away, but the images stayed.
“Guest room’s upstairs,” Ellie said, leading him up a narrow staircase. “Second door on the right.”
The room was small but clean. A bed with a quilt on it, a dresser, a window looking out over the fields. There was a bathroom next door that she said he could use.
“Do you need anything?” she asked. “Towels are in the closet. There’s extra blankets in the hall if you get cold.”
“I’m good,” Marco said. “This is great. Thank you.”
Ellie nodded. She lingered in the doorway for a moment, watching him, and then she went back downstairs.
They ate pizza in the kitchen. Ellie had ordered it before they left the gym, and it was waiting on the porch when they got there, still warm. They sat across from each other at the kitchen table, the box between them, and Marco ate like he hadn’t eaten in days. Which he mostly hadn’t.
Ellie watched him with an amused expression. “Hungry?”
“Sorry.” Marco wiped his mouth with a napkin. “I haven’t had pizza in a while.”
“Don’t apologize. I like a man who eats well.”
Marco felt his face get warm. He focused on his pizza.
After a while, Ellie leaned back in her chair and looked at him. Her expression had shifted. Still warm, but more serious now.
“Beer?”
“Yes, please.”
“Can I tell you something?”
“Sure.”
“Frank and I have a certain kind of relationship.” She paused as she placed a bottle of Carlsberg on the table right next to his plate, choosing her words carefully. “It’s too early for me to tell you exactly how it is. You’ll understand later. But if you see that things are kind of weird here, don’t be scared.”
Marco looked at her. “Weird how?”
“It doesn’t mean anything bad. I love Frank. Frank loves me. We have an open relationship.”
Marco’s heart started beating faster. He didn’t say anything.
“Does that bother you?” Ellie asked.
“No.” His voice came out a little too quick. “No, it doesn’t bother me.”
Ellie studied him for a moment, her head tilted, and something in her expression said she’d noticed how fast he’d answered. “Good.”
Frank got home around nine. He came in through the front door, dropped his bag, and found them in the living room. Marco was on the couch, Ellie was in the armchair, and they were watching something on TV that neither of them was really paying attention to.
“Hey, hey,” Frank said, walking into the room. “The family’s all together.”
He went to Ellie first, leaned down, and kissed her. Not a quick peck. A real kiss. His hand on her jaw, his mouth on hers, and it lasted a few seconds longer than Marco expected. When he pulled back, Ellie grabbed the front of his shirt and tugged him down for one more, quick and playful, and Frank grinned against her mouth.
Then Frank straightened up and looked at Marco. “How’s the room?”
“It’s great. Thanks again for letting me stay.”
“Don’t mention it.” Frank sat on the arm of Ellie’s chair and put his hand on her shoulder. “You eat?”
“We had pizza.”
“Without me?” Frank clutched his chest. “Betrayed by my own wife.”
“You don’t like pizza,” Ellie said.
“I like the idea of pizza.” Frank grinned at Marco. “She never invites me to pizza night. You’re already getting special treatment.”
