The morning was busy. Marco spent most of it mopping the studio floors and wiping down the bikes after the spin class. It wasn’t hard work, but it was constant, and by noon his arms were sore and his shirt was damp with sweat.
He kept noticing things. The way Ellie moved through the club, greeting clients by name, laughing with them, touching their arms. The way she seemed to know exactly what each person needed, whether it was encouragement or a compliment or just a smile. She was good at this. Really good.
And she looked incredible today.
Marco couldn’t stop noticing that either. She was wearing a fitted workout top that showed her curves, and her dark hair was down around her shoulders instead of in a bun. She had more makeup on than yesterday, and her lips were that same deep red, and every time she walked past him, he caught a hint of her perfume.
He wondered if she’d done that for him. Then he told himself he was being stupid.
He also kept noticing Frank.
Frank moved through the gym differently than Ellie. Where she was all warmth and social grace, he was physical. He’d walk past the weight room and grab a bar, knock out a few reps without breaking stride. He’d stretch in the hallway, arms over his head, his tank top riding up to show a strip of stomach, the dark hair on his lower belly trailing down into his waistband. He’d catch Marco watching and hold the pose a beat longer than necessary, that lazy half-smile on his face.
Marco didn’t know what to do with that. Didn’t know why his eyes kept drifting to Frank’s arms, the way the veins stood out when he gripped something, the way his shoulders filled out that tank top. He told himself it was just admiration. The way you notice a guy who’s in good shape. That was normal. That didn’t mean anything.
Around noon, he was restocking towels by the front desk when he saw Ellie talking to a client. The woman was maybe forty, blonde, wearing expensive workout clothes, the kind of woman who looked like she drove an SUV and had two kids in soccer. She was pretty in a polished way, but Marco wasn’t looking at her.
He was looking at Ellie.
The woman glanced over at him. Then back at Ellie. Then at him again. Ellie followed her gaze, looked at Marco for a moment, then turned back to the woman and said something Marco couldn’t hear. The woman laughed. Ellie nodded.
They were talking about him. He knew it.
He pretended not to notice and kept stacking towels.
A minute later, the woman left. She walked past Marco on her way out, and she gave him a look. Not subtle. A slow up-and-down that made his face hot. Then she smiled and walked out the door.
Ellie came over. She was carrying a clipboard, but she wasn’t looking at it. She was looking at Marco with a smile that said she already knew the answer to whatever she was about to ask.
“Just as I thought,” she said. Her voice was soft, that melodic quality that made his chest tight. “You’re already a hit with the ladies.”
Marco felt his face get hotter. “I don’t know about that.”
“Trust me.” Ellie leaned against the counter, close enough that he could smell her perfume again. “That was Kari. She’s been coming here for ten years. She’s never looked at any of my staff the way she just looked at you.”
Marco didn’t know what to say. He looked at Ellie, really looked at her, and his heart started pounding. She was even more beautiful up close. The dark eyes, the red lips, the way her hair fell around her face. She’d made an effort today. He was sure of it.
Was it for him?
He wanted it to be. That was the scary part.
“Anyway,” Ellie said, straightening up. “You did good today. Really good.”
“Thanks.”
“I mean it. The place looks better than it has in weeks. Frank’s not great with the detail stuff.”
“That’s because Frank doesn’t know what detail is,” came a voice from the hallway. Frank walked in, towel around his neck, water bottle in hand. “I’m a big picture guy.”
“Big picture.” Ellie rolled her eyes. “You didn’t see the coffee stain on the studio floor for three weeks.”
“It added character.”
“It was disgusting, Frank.”
Frank shrugged, unconcerned. He looked at Marco, and that look was there again, the one from yesterday, the slow appraisal that settled somewhere under Marco’s ribs. “Kid did good, though. I’ll give him that.”
Ellie smiled. “See? Even Frank notices. That’s rare. He doesn’t notice anything that isn’t a mirror.”
“Hey.” Frank pointed at her. “Keep talking, see what happens.”
“What’s gonna happen, Frank? You gonna flex at me?”
Frank flexed at her. Just a quick, ridiculous bicep pose, and Ellie laughed, and Marco laughed too, and Frank looked at Marco laughing and his expression softened into something warmer.
