# The Gym

Marco found the gym by accident.

He’d been walking for about an hour, trying to get his bearings in this new town, when he saw the sign. Iron & Grace Fitness Club. Bigger than he expected, with big windows showing rows of bikes inside and women in tight clothes pedaling away. There was a smaller entrance around the side with a sign that said Main Entrance.

He stood outside for a minute, looking at his reflection in the glass. He needed a shave. His shirt was wrinkled from sleeping in his car last night. He didn’t look like someone who belonged in a fitness club.

But he needed a job. Any job.

He pushed the door open.

Inside, it was nicer than he expected. A front desk with a marble counter, a smoothie bar off to one side, a hallway leading back to what looked like weight rooms and studios. There was music playing from speakers somewhere, low and rhythmic.

The front desk was empty.

Marco stood there for a moment, not sure what to do. He could hear the muffled sound of a class going on somewhere, a voice calling out counts, the whir of bike wheels.

“Hello?” he called.

No answer.

He walked further inside, past the front desk, past a bulletin board with class schedules. That’s when he saw her.

She was coming out of one of the studios, wiping her face with a towel. Dark hair pulled up in a messy bun. Tight lavender workout pants and a fitted top that showed the curves of her body. She moved like she owned the place, every step deliberate, a woman in her mid-thirties who carried her beauty with confidence rather than effort.

Then she saw him.

Marco’s mouth went dry.

She was beautiful. Not in a magazine way, not in a way you could just look at and move on. She had these dark eyes that seemed to see right through him, full lips painted dark red, and this expression like she knew exactly what she was looking at and was deciding what to do with it.

“Can I help you?” she asked.

Her voice hit him like something physical. Soft, with a kind of melody to it that made his chest tighten. He’d never heard a voice like that before. The kind of voice that made you want to lean in, to get closer, to hear her say your name.

“I, uh.” Marco swallowed. “I’m looking for a job.”

She let the towel drop around her neck and walked toward him. She moved with that same easy confidence, like the floor was lucky to have her walking on it. She stopped about two feet away and looked up at him.

“A job.”

“Yes, ma’am. Anything. I can clean, I can work the front desk, I can, uh, whatever you need.”

She tilted her head slightly. “You have any experience working in a fitness club?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Then why here?”

Marco hesitated. He thought about his car, the five Euros in his wallet, the zero in his bank account, the fact that he hadn’t eaten since yesterday. He thought about the town he’d left behind and the things he didn’t want to think about.

“I’m new in town,” he said. “I just need a chance.”

She looked at him for a long moment. Then she smiled, and it was like the sun coming out, and Marco felt something shift inside him that he couldn’t name.

“What’s your name?”

“Marco.”

“I’m Ellie.” She held out her hand. He shook it. Her grip was firm, her skin soft. “My husband and I own this place.”

“Your husband?”

“Yeah. He’s in the back. Frank!” she called over her shoulder. “Got a minute!”

A moment later, a man appeared from the hallway. He was tall, lean and fit, with thick dark hair and a chevron mustache. He wore a tank top that showed defined arms, and he had the kind of easy confidence that was different from Ellie’s. Hers was sharp. His was lazy. He was also in his mid-thirties, handsome in a way that suggested he’d been good-looking his whole life and was comfortable with it.

Marco looked at him and felt something click in his brain. The guy looked like someone, and then it hit him. A young Tom Selleck. That same rugged, handsome thing, the mustache, the easy charm. Something stirred in Marco’s chest that he didn’t expect and didn’t have time to examine.

Frank looked at Marco, then at Ellie, then back at Marco.

“Who’s this?”

“Says he’s looking for a job.”

Frank walked over and stood next to Ellie. He looked Marco up and down, slow and obvious, like he was sizing him up. His eyes lingered a beat longer than necessary, and Marco felt the weight of that look in his stomach.

“You ever work out?”

“Some. Not a lot.”

“You look like you could use it.” Frank paused, tilted his head. “Body’s nice though. You’ve got the right frame for it.” His eyes stayed on Marco. “Just takes a little discipline. And some pain at first, no way around that. But if you can handle it, I’ll ease you through. The results are worth it.”

Marco didn’t fully catch what was happening. “I can do whatever you need. Cleaning, maintenance, whatever.”

Frank looked at Ellie. Something passed between them. Some kind of silent conversation that Marco couldn’t read.

Ellie tilted her head. “Can’t you hear properly? He was talking about a job. He doesn’t want a trainer.”

Frank chuckled. “I heard you. I wasn’t talking about training him.”

Ellie shot him a look. Frank smiled, slow and devilish, not sorry at all.

Marco felt his face heat up. It landed then, what Frank had actually been saying. His stomach did something he didn’t want to examine.

“He’s pretty,” Ellie said. Her voice was still soft, still melodic, but there was something else in it now. Something calculating. “The ladies who come here, they like pretty faces. They like to see pretty faces around. If he’s here, we’re going to attract more clientele.”

Frank raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”

“You remember when you were younger and prettier?” Ellie said, her voice light and teasing. “How many ladies used to come?”

“Hey, come on.” Frank pointed at himself. “They still come because of me.”

Ellie laughed. A warm, musical sound that made Marco’s stomach do something strange. “You’re right. But not as much as they used to. You’re getting old, darling.”

Frank shook his head, but he was smiling. “You’re a real piece of work, you know that?”

“I know what I see.” Ellie gestured at Marco. “This one’s gonna attract a lot of ladies. Look at that face. God.”

Frank looked at Marco again, slower this time, and something shifted behind his eyes. “Yeah,” he said. “Yeah, I can see that.”

Marco didn’t know what to say to that. He just stood there, his hands in his pockets, feeling like he was being evaluated for something he didn’t quite understand. Frank’s gaze was heavy on him, appraising, and the strange thing was that he didn’t entirely mind it.
