ERICA

Grandma subsided, waiting. Jim kept his eyes on me, and nobody moved. As the seconds passed, my shock and confusion eased. Instead, I felt increasing anger.

Coolly, I said, “Jim, help me up.” My tone surprised him, and what I said next sounded icy.

“The rest of you, be quiet. Rebekah. Why are they here? They threw you away, like trash. Grandma needed to ... You know what she had to do. For God’s sake!”

“Erica...”

“NO. Answer my question. Why?”

“I’ve forgiven them. They’ve apologized. They’re our mom and dad. Please, be patient. I didn’t know how to tell you.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, and took a couple of deep, shuddering breaths.

“Bek, if you’re fucking with me, I’ll put my foot so far up your ass that my toenails will scratch your tonsils.”

My mother began, “Erica...”

I whirled on her, livid. “You shut the fuck up!”

Grandma raised her voice. “That’s enough. Erica, this is my home, and you will control yourself. I have always taken care of you, and I haven’t stopped now. Do. You. Understand?”

That was true. I nodded my head.

Continuing, Grandma said, “Your parents are here at my invitation. I know you’re angry, but I expect you to have a little self-control.”

Sullen, I told her I would behave.

Grandma took a moment to confirm, then she said, “We are going into the living room and sitting down. You will listen, and Rebekah will explain. Everyone else will be silent, or I’ll throw you out myself. My granddaughter has had a terrible shock, and we’re all going to be kind. If not, there’s the goddamn door, and I’ll toss your clothes out after you.”

Jim whispered in my ear, “Stay or go?”

“Stay, I have to hear. But keep track of your car keys.”

Grandma suggested that Jim and I make a stop in the bathroom and asked if we wanted anything.

“Just water,” I said.

ERICA

Jim and I were in the bathroom together. His face in the mirror betrayed how tired he was from five hours behind the steering wheel. At the same time, he made it clear. His main concern was for me, nobody else.

“Say the word, and I’ll get back in that car and drive you all the way back. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so angry and upset.”

“Jim, you’re amazing, but I need answers. I know you have my back.”

“Front, back, top, and bottom. Mm, bottom.” A tired Jim was a silly Jim.

“Shut up, idiot. Let’s go face the music.”

In the living room, I sipped at my water. Grandma knew that Jim had asked me, “stay or go,” and I’d chosen to stay.

I looked at my sister. “All right, Bek. What I know for sure is that you moved in with Grandma, and I stayed with mother and father for only a short time before going away to college. Later, I attended Grandma’s wedding to Stella, and you were there with Leila as your guest. Our parents chose to entirely skip out.”

“Erica, I behaved badly, by not telling you what was happening—both before and after that.”

“Shit! Bek, the wedding is not the story. With respect, Leila’s status isn’t the issue right now. Stop pissing around, just talk. Haven’t I waited long enough for the truth?”

“You’re right, I’m sorry.”

“I am running out of curse words, and patience. Rebekah, look at my face. I want an explanation. Our parents—and that word for them is questionable—threw you away.”

I heard my mother gasp hearing the word “questionable.” The truth hurts? Fuck her.

Bitterly, I kept going. “After what they did, Grandma and I completely disassociated with them.” My voice cracked. “You must feel like I do: dumped twice by so-called ‘mothers.’ Jim, let’s go.”

I read somewhere that in other languages people say “anger has me” instead of “I am angry.”
Anger controlled me now, and my patience was gone. My shoulders were knotted and my hands were in fists.

I heard anger from my sister. “Erica! I didn’t throw you away. I’m your sister forever. Always. You know that. But I’m not a kid anymore, and I’m going to talk like the adults we both are now. All right?”

“Yes, Bek. Go ahead.”

“Mom and Dad were all fucked up by that splinter church they belonged to, preaching anti-gay bullshit. Mom was upset because Grandma was gay, too, and Mom hated that you and I were estranged from her. She went to their pastor for counseling.”

I snuck a quick glance at my mother’s face. Was she angry now? Uh-oh.

“After spouting a lot of religious bullshit, the pastor turned on her, demanding sex. His wife walked in on them, carrying handcuffs. Erica, Mom kicked him in the balls, slugged his wife, and escaped. Even better, she went straight to the cops and handed them the handcuffs for evidence.”

I turned to Mom. “This is true?”

“Every word, Erica. Since I’d gone to the police first, I was able to talk Mike out of killing them. Instead, other victims were identified, the pastor and his wife were prosecuted and sentenced. Both are registered permanently as sex offenders. I’m confident they won’t be a threat in the future.”

“All right.” I turned back to Bek. “So, what happened next?”

“Just a minute. Mom was strong and brave. Remember that. The thing is, the way I’m telling the story, it sounds like it was all neat and sequential. A to B to C to D. But it wasn’t. It was a long time before Mom and Dad were able to slough off all those bigoted beliefs. Finally, though, they approached Grandma together and begged for her forgiveness.”

I said, “That had to be a lot of begging. They refused to attend Grandma’s wedding. Her son’s ultimate expression of disrespect and disloyalty. That’s kind of unforgivable, Bek.”

“Yeah. Of course. But they got unexpected help. Stella argued for them, asking Grandma to forgive them.”

“You’re kidding! Stella?” Shocked, I looked over to see Grandma holding Stella’s hand, and then leaning in to kiss her.

“Erica, I hope you get to know Stella. There’s only sweetness in her heart. She’s like Leila that way.”

I shook my head. “This is all hard to believe. Grandma, you forgave your son, influenced by your wife? After everything?”

“I did. I missed my son. Andrea, too. Most of the years they were together and raising you, they were good parents of wonderful girls. I couldn’t forget that history, and Stella knew my heart. What also swayed me? Even before they became free of that church, I knew that they missed you. Both of you.”

“How did you know?” I asked.

“I knew. Motherhood is like that. You might find that out for yourself someday. When I was reconciled with Andrea, I knew she ached for you girls while tearing at herself for being so foolish.”
