“For many days, nothing happened. That is, we were still traveling and the arguments continued. Finally, the three of them were able to hammer out an agreement.”
“Really? Erica, it all sounds like lawyers fighting over custody in front of a judge.”
“Yes. It was just like that. Bek moved in with Grandma. I would spend weekdays with Mom and Dad, and every other weekend I’d spend with Bek and Grandma. It was an agreed custody arrangement, just like my friends with divorced parents might have.”
“I can imagine how that might work, but it must have been difficult. Erica, I really want to know. How did you feel about this arrangement? We’re arriving soon. Is this custody arrangement still going on?”
“No, it ended for two reasons. First, we graduated from high school. No longer minors, we started at the university. Second, Grandma found a new partner and they got married. Dad reacted very badly, furious that his widowed mother had found someone to replace his late father. Jim, there was one more very important issue.”
“Something else he disliked?”
“Yeah. He’d eased off on Bek because she wasn’t going on dates with any kind of human while she finished high school. But Grandma’s marriage was really hard for him.”
“I guess some adults get all negative, thinking their fathers are being ‘replaced.’ Was that it?”
I shook my head, sadly. “Not really. Yes, my father disliked that his mother was moving on. But he viewed her second marriage as a specific insult—his mother doing the one particular thing to him that made him even angrier. After what happened with me, he just couldn’t abide his mother’s choice.”
“Your grandmother married a woman?”
“Jim, you got it in one. I could picture his face turning purple as he shouted and complained. Because he had a new ‘stepmother’ named Stella. A lesbian! I was very sad to see that Mom and Dad didn’t come to their wedding. I want to show you the pictures. Both of them wearing these gorgeous gowns. I was going to cry anyway, because it was a wedding. I mean, crying is required. But they were so happy; I was almost dehydrated afterwards. I needed to drink Gatorade.”
Jim smiled, saying, “Claudia and Stella, then. Legally married, then, valid in all fifty states. But your father was being so petty. Do you think your mom wanted to attend?”
“I’ll bet she did; however, she usually wants to show a united front with Dad. Speaking of gowns...”
“You had a bridesmaid dress?”
“Yeah, Jim, but that’s not it. Stella’s a nudist, so now Grandma is too. You need to be prepared. I think we’re only ten minutes away now. It will be like when we’re home with Harry and he strips off in the front hallway. If I remember correctly, the two of them have installed little cubbies inside the front door for visitors’ clothes.”
“Really? I’ll get naked if you will.”
“That’s right, Jim. We’ll boldly go—naked inside their house. It’ll be fun; I’ll proudly show off my hunky man. Also, there’s a spa, you know, a hot tub. It’s out on their back patio, under a ‘No Swimsuits Allowed’ sign.”
“Oh, yeah? Is there privacy? Neighbors can’t see?”
“No, if you’re soaking they can see you from next door. But it doesn’t matter.”
“C’mon, Erica. Why doesn’t it matter?”
“Their neighbors are always coming over, getting naked, and joining them in the tub. You’ll probably see (and I mean, really see) them before we leave and come home.”
“Yeah, yeah. Isn’t this the right road? It’s pretty out here. Let’s see: 44, 50, 56, is that their house? The beige one behind the pine trees?”
“Yeah, just go all the way down their driveway and park. Yeah, right here is good ... oh, that’s my sister!”
I was pushing my door open almost before the wheels stopped turning. Impatiently, I fumbled with my seat belt and hopped out to crash into Bek, chest-to-chest.
“Been too long!” I blurted. We hugged each other tightly. Jim circled around the car to stand with me. Bek finally let me loose. I wasn’t surprised that she was naked, but she obviously wanted to introduce me to the nude woman standing a few feet behind her.
