The train journey south was going to take about four hours. We got lucky with our timings, and managed to avoid a long transfer in London. I had never been to Brighton before. I remember it was called the gay capital of the UK when I was younger, but I didn’t know whether that was true or not. I barely knew anything else about it, except that it had a beach, and a football team.
“Did you bring suncream?” Lily asked. We were on the second of our two train journeys.
“It’s February,” I reminded her. She was determined to go to the beach. She insisted that I bring some shorts. She had brought a bikini for herself. I was more than happy to go for a walk down the coast or on the sand, but it was unlikely to be warm enough for a sunbathe. The skies were forecast to be clear at the very least.
“Better to be safe than sorry,” she said.
“Thanks for looking out for me,” I chuckled. She spent most of the journey pointing at things through the window, distracting me mid-conversation when she spotted a farm full of cows or sheep.
Lily was legitimately nervous about reuniting with Bethany. It had been almost 12 years since she left after fulfilling their contract. A lot had clearly changed. Bethany was retired from tennis, she had moved to another city, she had broken up with her boyfriend, found a husband and given birth to a daughter. Lily was certain they would still be friends, but she just couldn’t shake those nerves.
Playing truant from school had been pretty easy. My parents were fine with the plan of us going off on a weekend adventure to meet up with one of Lily’s previous summoners. I had already been away on a couple of short breaks with my friends for gigs, so this wasn’t my first time going out of the city on my own. We had our bags packed ready for our train, but told them we would be gone before they got back from work. The only bit of effort we needed to put in was dressing in our sixth form uniforms in the morning, so it looked like we were headed to college. I called in sick for the both of us before registration. Alice was going to back us up if necessary, claiming she saw how sick we were the night before if she was asked about our absence.
Alice had spent most of the morning straddling me. We were now officially together, but would be spending the next couple of nights apart. We got our money’s worth with a big smooch in bed, only climbing out when it was almost too late. She was going to be staying over again on Sunday night, and we would definitely make up for our time apart.
“Do you think I should add a love heart emoji after Alice’s name in my contacts now that she is my girlfriend?” I asked. I was being completely serious, and scowled when the succubus started laughing at me.
“You should choose an emoji with a personal touch,” Lily said. I thought she was going to bully me but she answered genuinely. “The love heart is too generic.”
“Okay,” I said, before pausing for a moment while I had a think. “Hamster emoji it is.”
“Why?”
“They’re both cute.”
“You are both cute,” Lily said. “I’m happy you’re together. That was my first target after getting here. My job is done now.”
“Are you going to be leaving then?” I joked.
“I’m stuck with you both until we find out the truth,” she said. She had three different meal deals on the table in front of her. She loved her food.
“What happens when you get those answers?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” Lily said. “What do you mean?”
